Title: How to access wallet.dat from a previous wallet
Post by: decryptit on January 19, 2022, 05:48:14 PM
Hey everyone

How do I access the old BTCcore wallet.dat? I was operating a previous node then I ran out of space on that disk so I can't run that node to access that wallet. Can I simply create a new wallet in the new node and transfer the wallet.dat into the new wallet folder? Another word, can I just replace the new wallet.dat with the old wallet.dat? The new node is fully synced.

Thanks BTC

Yes. But: exit Bitcoin Core before doing this. And backup your (funded) wallet.dat before loading it into a newer version of Bitcoin Core.

Ok Thanks! So create a new wallet in the new node, then simply replace the wallet.dat? Will I need to do anything in the console for the passphrase?

Yes, that is the easiest solution.

You won't need the passphrase, unless you're sending funds.

So that worked! Once the new node was synced, I created a new wallet and then it was a simple drag and drop the old wallet.dat to replace the new one. I was able to send btc with the encrypted keys.
