Title: SCAM ALERT? Exodus.com or Exodus.io?
Post by: BernyJB on January 25, 2022, 05:23:37 PM
So, pretty simple question. I'm trying to install the exodus wallet in my laptop, and (as usual with fedora), nothing is as easy as it may be. So watching videos on the Exodus wallet setup, I noticed they mention exodus.io, while the site I downloaded the wallet from is exodus.com.
Should I be worried?

Thanks in advance.  :)

No, there is nothing to be worried about. If you visit Exodus.io you'll get redirected to the .com version. The team owns both domains.

If I am not wrong Exodus is not completely open sourced so its not really 100% secure for long term holding. If you are using this wallet for storage of Bitcoin then better go for Electrum which is available for desktop as well and light weight so you can feel safe.

To be fair, quite a bad move for Exodus to be using the .com domain as their main domain, but use the io on their social media usernames. Can't blame you that you got confused.

Electrum is the best bitcoin wallet desktop users can use, it is open source which is better than close source wallets.

Exodus should make it clear to people, it is not bad to include both the .com and .io any time they are including the link to their website. It will be good to always notify people in the mail they send to them that only those two are correct while others belongs to scammers.

If it is not done like this, Exodus users should mail Exodus about this suggestion.

Making it clear won't be enough as not everyone will be reading emails. What they should've done is to pick one TLD, and stick with it. They either change the main domain to .io, or to change their social tags to com.

BernyJB, what is said by:@OmegaStarScream, right, they have both.

Although, @OmegaS already gave you an answer, but below is additional information for you, for your future Reference.

What domains does Exodus use? (https://support.exodus.com/article/928-what-domains-does-exodus-use)

I hope you can calm down now.

I would suggest it too for desktop users and they also have mobile version too but less option like "sign a message" for example.

Maybe some people didn't bother with the use of .com domain and .io on their social media username that's why no one bother to send them a suggestion to change it to their main domain. One thing that comes to my mind is I think they didn't bother changing the username to the main domain as explained by OmegaStarScream that when you access or open the exodus.io version then you will be redirected to the exodus.com version.

yep its same actually is not just exodus i know hotbit.io have multiple domain probit has to,

In addition to OmegaStarScream's post, even if it seems that you're dealing with correct domain extensions, you should always double-check to see if you're not visiting a spoofed website and while you're at it, "verify its authenticity (https://support.exodus.com/article/131-how-to-verify-that-your-exodus-download-is-authentic)"!

To be fair, quite a bad move for Exodus to be using the .com domain as their main domain, but use the io on their social media usernames.
For what it's worth, they paid "$1.9 million to acquire the ".com" extension in the Q1 of last year (https://freespeech.com/2021/05/30/exodus-com-domain-name-acquired-for-1945000/)"...
- It's worth noting that registering multiple domains of a similar kind would act as a fence against the spoofed websites and a lot of known brands do it to some extent.

Oh for sure, purchasing the .com domain was definitely the right move. But still, they should've totally committed to the .io instead in my opinion, with the .com redirect to the .io domain instead. It's not like .io domains are bad in the first place; I would understand if they were using something like .to or .xyz.

I don't know what is the reason for getting .com domain, Exodus (wallet) is mainly focused on beginners those are clicking on the first result of Google search.
they fixed them old error by starting with .io domain. <like blockchain.info (who remember it)> so its temporary problem.

In general, check releases hashes[1] or the number of downloads in the stores.

It's a good move for Exodus to acquire both .com and.io two very popular domains and widely used on Cryptocurrency if you are a very popular project on the internet and it deals with finances it's very important to get all available extensions on your domain name to avoid phishing, Facebook is doing that they also own .org and redirect to the.com, to be sure and I always advise always check the Alexa rank phishing sites do not have traffic metric, because they are easily taken down.

You should be aware that some links are dangerously subtle like that. Some have small dots above the characters, and people who can't notice small details like that or have difficulty recognizing the misspell often get scammed like this. I'm proud of OP that he is checking these kinds of things and making sure that he hasn't made a mistake and wouldn't regret downloading anything from the wrong sources. It's good to be a bit speculative or suspicious with these small details because you will never know unless you are probably victimized already.

I haven't used Exodus wallet for long time, so, I also got a bit confused when I saw this topic. As said above, both .com and .io domains is official ones, but maybe Exodus haven't communicated it clearly enough and people get confused. For example I remember that when Blockchain.info bought .com domain, they had spread news about it widely.

If I am not wrong Exodus is not completely open sourced so its not really 100% secure for long term holding. If you are using this wallet for storage of Bitcoin then better go for Electrum which is available for desktop as well and light weight so you can feel safe.
You're right about it. But this topic isn't about whether Exodus is good wallet to use or no. Electrum is good wallet, but it's just for Bitcoin and don't offer multiple coin support.

Yeah this is not about Electrum or other wallets but OP may not know the alternative options for multiple cryptocurrency or even just for the Bitcoin itself. I won't prefer a closed source wallet to hold either its bitcoins or shitcoins, if OP wants ultimate security then he can go for hardware wallets which is pretty much cheaper compared to the value of cryptocurrencies we are going to store in it.

Neither he knows or not about those custodial and non custodial but its his choice or preference which one should be used but its not bad on reading up others suggestion in regarding on this one.

Both domains is owned by Exodus and as earlier mentioned that there's some redirection which you could really make yourself confident that you are dealing with real thing.

I cant blame out other people on being a bit paranoid though in terms of safety.  :D

That's redirection and developers and webmasters can redirect one of their domains to one of their domains, you can redirect as many domains as you like to one domain, be sure to check the traffic stat of the site, old and reputable sites have and maintain their traffic stat, and they trace phishing sites they will report it to protect the reputation of their domain so always check stats and take time to check if you are landing on the right site.
