Title: Bitcoin book as surprising gift
Post by: Little Mouse on February 07, 2022, 02:43:21 PM
Recently, I have taken a step to create awareness about cryptocurrency among the people I know (Friends, cousin etc.). There are few books on cryptocurrency in Bengali language. I haven’t read all as the title was stupid. I have read one by Mostafa Tanim, "Bitcoin: Blockchain and Other cryptocurrency". I have gifted two times so far, one to my cousin and another one to my friend. What I'm doing is ordering the book online directly to their address though rokomari.
This is what I think the best approach to send a message that they should learn about it. Share your opinion/experience with such activities.

most peoples first question is, is it a real currency?, like real in the real world?

best proof i gave was ordering pizza with bitcoin. when it arrived we then chatted about bitcoin. by the time we were finished then they were ready to learn about the technicals of it

throwing them in the deep end about the technicals first will just bore them and have them asking questions about is it actually useful in the real world and should they even bother reading something about something they have not yet used, seen or dealt with.

maybe look into local merchants/retailers that accept bitcoin in their local town. and along with the book send them invitation to make a btc address and you will send them enough for a coffee, pizza, doughnut or cake at the local store to buy.

Most important question is, do they have an interest in bitcoin the same as you? If yes, there is nothing wrong with whatever approach you will do and besides, they are your relatives and they understand you more than anyone if they witnessed your success using this bitcoin. But if they are not into bitcoin, I doubt if they appreciate that idea.

Be very careful about how you introduce people to Bitcoin. If the book is of poor quality, there's a risk that it will set them on the wrong path, like investing in shitcoins, DeFi, NFT, using custodial wallets, maybe even investing in fake bitcoins like BSV or BCH. Why not gift them something like "Mastering Bitcoin" by Andreas Antonopoulos which has very positive reviews from a lot of people?

Little Mouse said they have read the book and ideally anyone should personally try out any tool they plan to use to introduce someone else to a new technology such as bitcoin. In addition to this you should always be as realistic as possible; I could be very optimistic about the bitcoin market, but I will not want to show that optimism when discussing it with someone else, I will rather discuss the positives and drawbacks of the technology, giving you enough information to make an informed decision.

Since the main idea was to spread awareness about cryptocurrency among his circle, I guess its safe to assume they don't have much interest in cryptocurrency or maybe not at all. In my opinion theres nothing wrong with doing such a thing, they could build their interest in bitcoin and friends while reading the book later.

It's actually a very good idea to give a bitcoin book as a gift, the problem is how much basic interest in reading it the people who want to be gifted also need to know beforehand. In my environment, books are no longer a fun source of learning, instead the internet is more accessible. I mean here about adults, I haven't found anyone who likes to read around me in a long time. Even school-age children have less interest in reading their textbooks even though they have free time.

My sister is reading Nathaniel Popper's book Digital Gold. She has no interest in cryptocurrencies, but the book is about the early history of Bitcoin and she is enjoying the drama.

I hope your cousins are readers so your gift don't find itself under the box. Books are great gift items, even better are books about bitcoins and cryptocurrency. It's a thoughtful gift, i pray they see the value in it. You know some may find books boring as gift items, i think you can spice up book gift items with some food and wine, everyone likes that too.

Not a bad action and any thing which do connects out with exposure and recognition is always  considered a good step no matter which way you would be doing
it which it would always count  and impressive. So far i havent done it on my own on people around me but its not bad on having this consideration but it
would be only good if they would somewhat approach me for that but totally opening it and trying out to tell them even if they didnt need
it then its not my style.

Are they book readers? Good for them if they are since most people nowadays has a shorter attention span and that's maybe due to the influence of social media.

I often start with some short youtube videos. The result is usually less of what I expect since most of them prefer to ask "how do I make money?" or "how do I start investing?".

Hi,...
I have given good books to some people I know well, I would not give a book to a brother for example about parenting or finances, he can  take (idea) it the wrong way, I think a book is something very personal, as a teacher used to say, give a book to a person and that it is not the correct one is like giving mouthwash or deodorant for the armpits, perfume, that you are doing it for a simple gesture of friendship, but that can confuse in several cases.

If someone you know is interested in bitcoin, leave it,  it's there, it's visible (there's talk about bitcoin, there are transactions, there's an exchanges, there's news...) it's not hidden science.

I would never give a book about bitcoin to anyone, it's throwing money in the trash, nor do they read it, unless he or she has a real interest, 100% sure that he will not put it on his shelf, today we were casually at the local board talking about documentaries of bitcoin, we are in an innovative era full of streaming, quality audio visual content available, that works best for me.

...good luck with that anyway.

If they are book lovers, then they are easy to approach with books and I'm sure they will appreciate it when you give it to them as a reference and answers to their questions about bitcoins. There are lots of people who love reading until today because they find it so relaxing and calm while adding some knowledge to their brain. Maybe some of them already heard about it from others but have a lack of information about the fundamentals of bitcoins and you give them those books that have the answers to satisfy them.

As far as I observe, people don't know things by reading about them in books. To somebody who does not know about Bitcoin, I think it is a bit too much to read an entire book about it. One reads a book about Bitcoin if Bitcoin has already got him interested. So there must be a brief yet meaningful introduction about Bitcoin. Perhaps a short video or article on what Bitcoin is or the whitepaper itself might be enough to trigger more interest and leads one to look for books.

How did your friend and relative find the book that you gave? Did they read them with excitement?

Giving a book about bitcoin as a gift to others is a good idea but that will depend on they like to read a book or they will not read that book.
If they finally read that book, they will usually ask you for more questions and ask about many things such as is that true? How we can convert bitcoin to fiat and many more.
But only a few of them read a book to get more information while others will search on the internet or come to you to discuss further.
But that is still a good thing for them because you give them a chance to know and learn something that might be useful and worth it for you.

Suggestion, Don't start introducing Bitcoin with a lot of technicalities. Its much better to gift them something they will see or physical like Physical coins, Bitbills and other Bitcoin collectibles so that they can easily appreciate that will lead them to have a curiosity to learn more about Bitcoin and its technical aspect. Your friend will just be bored due to the overwhelmed terms and technicality on how blockchain works. Let them DYOR it so that they will really appreciate Bitcoin.

Not all people are ready to read books.
Not all people are open-minded to adopt new concept, new technology.
Not all people are easily to accept Bitcoin as a game changer in this world.

Sooner or later, they will accept it and use Bitcoin very often. If they won't accept Bitcoin, they will be killed by inflated fiat currencies.

but yeah you did a great job mate because books is a lifetime gift that they may take for the rest of their life and can be shared to their next generation .

First of they should be reader and enthusiasts in taking time to do so. Many of them are so involved in the social networking that they have forgotten to read the real books by getting comfortable in the chair.

Today’s generation is all about quick learning’s. Go online search the topic and get quick answers from the online repository. They will sometimes just throw questions in quora, Reddit and forums.

I am not really sure what would be their impression regarding the physical book really.

Though it seems bright idea, it just don’t fit in for current generation.

In no way I’m taking this negatively, the tone feels in that way but it’s all about the facts of today’s generation.  ;D

It'd probably be that I'd recommend books in the first place to people who actually like to read, and honestly, they're rather rare. Most people nowadays have quite short attention spans, especially on a completely new topic, and a rather complicated one (from the outside) like Bitcoin (or crypto in general). I had a few experiences with my friend first but that was because they were rather interested in it, they were asking stuff about what it is, how it works, and mainly how to earn money from it (which is their main motivation I think).

The way you introduce cryptocurrency to beginners is a very simple way and maybe they will quickly understand it, but it would be better if after introducing them to crypto you also have to guide them directly so that they don't choose the wrong path when they want to invest because usually beginners when make investments seeing that crypto is an investment tool that can give them wealth easily.

Great points here mate , as we knew that there are only few who is interested in reading books than accepting other gifts we might bring them.

and also adoption takes time and wont happen just overnight so yes this is different thing to be accepted.

also agreed on this, but they will learn this the hard ways and not because we wanted them to understand.

If you want to give Bitcoin book as a gift, there must be a connection between a person and cryptocurrency. Otherwise a person might think that this is just a random gift you have chosen, and you havent spend much time thinking what to give. That might offend a person. If they are completely new to cryptocurrency, wouldnt it be good first to give them some basics, or at least introduce to crypto. Maybe they wont be interested in it at all. In worse case, they might think that you are trying to impose your interest to them.

Here is my little experience. I always liked Apple products. I was iPod nano user for years. Then I got an iPhone, and later bought an iPhone for my girlfriend. When iPad was introduced, I have bought it during first year after release, and I was simply in love with my first macbook pro. It was my first experience with macbook. One day my girlfriend bought me a gift - Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography (https://www.amazon.com/Steve-Jobs-Walter-Isaacson/dp/1451648537) in hardcover. And guess what, besides few chapters, I never read it.

This is a great idea and worth encouraging pls keep it up, in addition to this one can also make bitcoin branded surveineirs as such on gifts, branded shirts, wallpapers, stickers and billboards, while in so doing creates more awareness to bitcoin, also the use of short video clips, jingles, or movies with bitcoin as the story line, in so doing this create more awareness to the puplic to the extent of giving it a try as what you see often can tempt you to giving it a trial. Another means is individuals person project such as seminar on bitcoin in the nearest community.

I think giving the bitcoin book is already a good approach, especially for book fans who might prefer to find information through books instead of electronic media, and hopefully with this book there will be a desire to learn more about btc.
That's actually rare for someone to prefer books rather than electronic media and yeah, I think that books would be a good one because you know that the information there won't change which means that you won't worry getting confused because even with new information, you will still be able to easily differ and learn the new information.

I do not know if that is a good idea or not good because we do not know if your relatives like reading a book. Before you buy any books and give them to them, you should discuss cryptocurrency and see how they react. If they are welcome to crypto, you can tell them that you can give them a book about crypto to start learning. So it is not like you give them a book and let them read and ask you what crypto is. No, it is not like that. We need to know their interest in a new thing and how they will react. After all, if they like to read a book and have a big curiosity about a new thing, they find out what it is.

That sounds like a good thing and hopefully your friend and cousin you gifted these books are the type that will actually read them to understand or gain knowledge from the gift they have recieved. Some people would learn faster if you coach them on things yourself and I think for the ones closest to you, you might want to teach them by showing them how you do it.

That's actually a good idea gifting books about cryptocurrency to others but the problem with that is if the person is really interested or not. Usually, people only will have interest on reading something like that if they are eager to learn about it or curious about it but most people do not. For me what I do is I give them an address, private key and tell them it's a money and I give it to you, here's some materials to read... study it and you'll get that money and it works.

You should not pick a book based on their title because you wouldn't know what if the contents of that book are amazing. Sometimes you cant judge the book by its cover but I guess that's okay if the book has a spoiler. Some crypto books are just stories and doesn't describes the origin of cryptos and blockchain.

Your choice is right and that is better for the people that does not have a complete knowledge in crypto. They should start first in the beginning before moving on other non important topics. The idea of delivering books straight to their address is genius. In that way, they wont have a reason to ignore it than if you handed the book personally with them.

Congratulation to your good step to impact your family what decentralized is all about in the community. Your family will never forget this gift you have offered to them by giving them all the keys and strategies of cryptocurrency which will really help them to know the rules and regulations that guide bitcoin in the community.
Many people are now looking for where to learn cryptocurrency and to know what crypto is all about to humanity. Those that understood bitcoin are really happy with what they are achieving from bitcoin.

What I do understand is most of my friends and family would rarely go ahead and read a whole book on bitcoins, they would rather watch a 5 minute YouTube video on it or Google it elsewhere therefore I do think the best approach might be to give them some amount of money in Bitcoins that they can use or they will get a bit excited about it and the book might cost a 5 or 10 and as an initiative I would just give them money in a wallet, a paper wallet or something that would allow them to take thing in their own hands. I generally find that people and kids find it more interesting and worthwhile if they do it themselves. Practical knowledge sticks with them for a really long time but normal one doesn't. Therefore I do think that it might be the beginning or something better. I always encourage my friends to join the Bitcointalk.org, tell them about the community and other things as well and recently I got 3 of my friends to join and they are exploring by themselves.

Good initiative. Make sure they like to read and they have faith in you. It's because usually, we do not read books by random writers or unknown writers who aren't famous. Here is the main challenge. Sending books isn't a big deal at all since you can explain them in real life to motivate them. If they are interested then you may send a book to study more about Bitcoin technology. Otherwise, it would be quite hard to understand and trust as well. If you can inspire them somehow then definitely they will read the book from curiosity. However, thanks for adopting Bitcoin.

That's actually a good start that you've been doing. Someone who cares for his friends and family about being knowledgeable in bitcoin and blockchain has a good heart.
I haven't seen others did this before or if there are those type of people that have been doing it, they might not prefer to share it with the others. Just keep on doing it and you may ask them some questions on what's their impression and what are the the basic information that they've gained upon reading a few pages of the book that you sent them.

Actually it's a development because you giving them a preferential kind of bitcoin education, what i want to know from you is that what is your obligation and your objectives to make such sacrifice of given Bitcoin text book to them as surprised. From my perception it's good to educate someone who is curious and eager to know about bitcoin, because giving him book that expatiate the necessary things of cryptocurrency when it's not willing to learn... from advantages side of it, any article of bitcoin you read has create impact in Bitcoin. Using this medium to recapitulate, book of bitcoin is good to read and understand the conception of cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin in particular.

I don't think a "book" would be  good surprising gift for someone to learn about bitcoin. Instead of making them read about crypto currencies from a book which might be biased and filled with wrong information, it's better to provide them different valid sources where they can do their own research and learn about crypto currencies. And since crypto currencies are rapidly developing, the books might have all outdated information which would just confuse the reader.
Just reading books won't help them. Send them some coins. Let them use it while learning about it.

Introducing Bitcoin to everyone is a great method to raise knowledge about the cryptocurrency, and you're offering them a Bitcoin book is a great idea. However, readers may possibly take the wrong idea while reading it, especially they have no interest and have doubted Bitcoin very much.
IMO, I have never done such a thing in my life, but whenever I talk to someone about Bitcoin, one of the most common things that I've noticed is that they believe their own view rather than listening and show no interest, which is why I believe that giving them Bitcoin books is pointless and wasteful.

It is not a terrible move of yours, but books are becoming less effective because the majority of us do not enjoy reading books and may find them uninteresting.  I believe that Bitcoin films or documentaries with high-quality audiovisual content are more effective in introducing bitcoin to people in general.

Maybe its a good idea but let us also consider that not everyone has an interest of reading books because of some many reasons. Some people dont read books, simply because they find it boring. They rather do explore on social media or internet.Another reason would be the lack of time. This applies for those people who are busy doing their job and when they come back home they are just to tired to read.

The best way you can do is to show them how it works rather than simply giving them a book..And if you show and you can do that as a part of gifting a small amount as part of demonstration,i think thats going to be stick and  actually be taken seriously. Simply just giving a bitcoin book is not worthy. Its better to show them rather than giving a book.

Hope this is not going to be a Valentines Day gift.

You can create this gift more interesting, you can add a QR code with a wallets private key somewhere in the middle of the book, or hide parts of private key parts in the book. This will stimulate to read it.

Hope this books is not like encyclopedia and is written in easy language. What is the idea of this book anyway? To give basic information about cryptocurrency? In our digital era, wont it be better and easier to get this kind of info through video, as it is easier to visualize what you learn about?

Gifting books is one of the best gift to offer anyone  because of the knowledge that will be gained from the book,  you have just added values that will change life for better.  This gift will be totally  great,  if those who have received the gift are readers and have been willing to know more about bitcoin.

Therefore, I had to share Bitcoin with those that don't know about it! We shouldn't miss such a great opportunity to introduce bitcoin to the world. A book on Bitcoin, blockchain, and other branches may be an ideal source of information. But meeting other people with the same interests would be great, discussing events, predicting price fluctuations, sharing strategies, discussing new coins, sharing links, and giving advice.

The main motivation for most people is usually how they would make money. That’s like the general motivation for almost everyone these days. When I also talk to my friends about cryptocurrency, they usually ask me how they would make money and how much they can make. So, it’s nothing new at all. And as for sending books to people, I wouldn’t think that’s meant for my friends, because they wouldn’t read it. Most people find it difficult these days to read books, they would prefer watching videos online. You would only see a few who are ready to open books and read these days.

I saw many Bangla books about Blockchain. But what if Bangladesh Govt. legalize the crypto industry. Our neighbor's nation totally legalize crypto with tax regulation. Now very few countries in the world are prohibited to using crypto. When I go to any crypto service site, I first to their geo-restriction page, are they really support Bangladesh or not?
However, Rokomari is a great online book shopping store, my experiences were also great, btw আপনি আমাকেও গিফট করতে পারেন ;D

How to give gifts that are unique, useful and educational about crypto. maybe it can be imitated by sharing reading books about cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and also about blockchain.
If they (your friends and relatives) can understand and are interested in bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, then you have succeeded in educating them. If they start asking questions, guide them and don't get caught up in things that will harm them, explain about the risks that will be faced. it will be better.

The idea that you have applied is not  bad, but the only problem is that you said you haven’t read the books, so don't you think that it would be wrong sending books that you don’t even know anything about to some of your friends? It needs to be books that you have read, that way you would know the quality of contents that are in these books and whether they really explained the concept of Bitcoin accurately before sending it to your friends and family.

You don’t just send random books to people, when you don’t even know the contents of the book. So, it would be best that you go through the books and read them, and know which one would be best to send to them.

The intention is good, and is well appreciated as being expressed here. However, @dezoel is right that OP should’ve at lest read the book or familiarize with its content, to see if the book is has credible contents and is enticing enough for the receivers to read it. I think that it would be great to accompany them through their journey of learning about crypto.

Is this digital book also available for download free of cost too or only the paid physical copy was available which you gifted to the friends ?
Anyways in both the cases, it is a good initiative from you to develop awareness about bitcoin but usually people find it cumbersome to read the books when everything is available in the form of videos tutorials. However, for a starting point, it is good that people have something in hand where they can read about it and later learn more about it online.

A book is always good to read, especially when it comes to speculative markets and investment, when we learn about the market we do so based on the experiences of some market speculators, the advice of some chartists and especially the experiences and theories of the best on Wall Street, everything you learn in books like Warren Buffet, Livermore, Wyckoff, Malkiel Burton and others is totally applicable to the BTC market, however it is difficult to make a book about the BTC market because nobody has the full knowledge of how volatility can be dealt with, this is the ingredient that has to be treated with extreme care in this market.

Gifting Books as a gift on a special occasion is a good introductory initiative towards Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency awareness. But have to take feedback about it. Because Bengali is the regional language, what is mentioned in that book is a must to know. The writer's views or experiences might be personal.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are hard to understand just by reading. It needs practical experience. Personal use of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies with its environment can give more confidence and mobility in the current crypto industry. Including all safety and security are the most important preventive majors for crypto assets.
