Title: Crypto mining spare parts works differently?
Post by: ANSEL_2.0 on February 24, 2022, 07:15:11 PM
How often do you change riser on mining rig? Do I have to have spare risers at home for what reason? I have friend living very close to my house and he has a 100MH mining rig which works for a very long time without changing a thing and I've read posts on here about people complaining about bad risers or cables, I'm just learning more about mining and I want to venture into it

Weird question, even if you have a car you must have a spare tire because anything can happen at any time, just because your friend mining rig is running for months or years with no issue doesn't mean yours will be the same, having spare parts is just for emergency purpose.

Risers don't wear out, they're not like tires. Replace them only if they fail.

BTW, my car, purchased new, didn't come with a "spare" tire, it was optional.
But living in a 4 season climate I have a winter and summer set so I use one from
the currently unused set as a spare.

Risers hardly stop working unless they get burnt due to wrong connection, most times it's always the riser cable that aren't premium built, I think it's better to have spare cables than spare riser.

Many risers have different quality. Im sure they will let you know when riser fails :) many years only couple of them failed. when you buy risers 1st check how solders are made this 1st thing will sign quality.

I have always 20 or more riser at mining farm. If something goes wrong with the cable or so  - i change the whole riser with all cables to be sure that all is fine. So in my opinion it is good choice to have some spare riser at home. But i only change riser maybe 1 time in 6 months or so.

Cables are of different qualities know what you are buying, you can't compare cables that comes with 004 risers with those that comes with 009 risers, also make sure you buy from a sincere store as I've seen sellers swapping out cables from a 006 to 009 riser before.

You should have spare raisers. 1-2 raisers are a must. Even if there is a shop for miners near you, then when you need raisers or the store will be closed or there will be no raisers for sale.
philipma1957 wrote a nice post about what a miner should have, but I can't find it.

A crypto miner should have the following

1. A working power supply
2. Extra motherboard
3. Risers 2-4

There will come a time when your motherboard will start acting weird, having a extra mobo will save you some headache when troubleshooting, same as power supply and risers.
