Title: [INFO] 2013 BTC card
Post by: minerjones on February 26, 2022, 01:18:58 PM
Acquired from a recent trade, this card was purchased from Ebay Canada in 2013 when BTC was around $120
Anyone have more info on this?

Any way of knowing if the card is associated with the black wallet ? It may have just been put in there ?

A quick search comes up with a possible ? connection with CoinKite ?

I have one of those coinkite cards.

the funny part is if this is a crypto card issued by Scotiabank - in 2018 they banned buying Bitcoin with their payment cards.

now after some more digging - was Coinkite originally part of ScotiaBank? maybe that is what mbitr was getting at though I saw no mention of Scotiabank in his linked article.

however this link - makes it look like Coinkite was part of ScotiaBank - or am I misunderstanding the link?

the words I see on the part of holo that is still there - "genuine" "original" "authentic"

I wonder if this was an early test for the coinkite card though this card has no mag stripe and doesnt appear to have a chip. so its more of a card that had a public address and a secured private key. kinda like what ballet is without the bip38 encryption on the pk.

I got very confused too - apologies only had a certain time window today to get down the rabbit hole - I’ll see if I can dig a bit deeper  :)

There were a few more links - but realistically I was trying to make connections and may well be wrong ?? Scotiabank definitely banned Crypto in 2018, that’s for sure.
Nothing on the card itself indicates any reference  to scotiabank , but this may well be any early promo card ?

Anyway love these discoveries , love a new rabbit hole  :)

the more I read about ScotiaBank - it seems less likely that they would have made a card like this - as it has no mag stripe or chip.

What does a card look like that is untouched?

To me this appears to not be right

The card is almost blank

My guess is that the card is not connected to ScotiaBank in any way.

It looks like a prototype that someone made that is just being stored in a ScotiaBank card holder. It's a blank card that has the private key and public address printed both in QR code form and text form. The private parts are simply covered with two stickers, one fancier than the other. The fact that 1 BTC was transferred in and the next day 1 BTC was transferred out reinforces the idea that it's just a prototype/test.

Still a cool find though.

Does it have any kind of NFC inside the card itself? You can use a phone to read that, here's an Android app that does it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wakdev.wdnfc

A possibility... I will reach out to the original owner and see if they are connected.

And no NFC... that was one of the first things I checked on the card ;)

Found out a little more information:

-The black holder from ScotiaBank did not come with the card
-The card was bought from Ebay.ca (Canada) and told may be a prototype/test of some sort

If anyone is interested in the card/holder, PM me.

Thanks for the update....now the question is what company made the  prototype/test card?

might be possible by looking at what address funded it - could be an exchange address or a company address if it had lots of txns.
