Every day, people are getting more used to digital payments with crypto due to the numerous benefits it provides. There are no chargebacks, no middleman, and lower fees. Comparing crypto against traditional credit/debit cards issued by banks, I'd say crypto wins by a long shot. Merchants and businesses are slowly accepting crypto as payment method, so we should see credit/debit cards lose traction in the long run. Even VISA announced that it will be using Blockchain tech for its own benefit.

The way I see this will turn out in the future is that credit/debit cards will cease to exist as they're replaced by stablecoins and decentralized cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Maybe VISA, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover will make stablecoins of their own? If credit/debit cards are eliminated, then we'll be on the right path towards a full-fledged cashless society. Instead of carrying with a physical wallet full of paper money or plastic cards, you would only carry a smartphone with a digital wallet containing the coins of your choice.

What do you think? Will cryptocurrencies eliminate the need for credit/debit cards in the future? If not, why? Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. :)

Since this concerns something that is in the future, maybe my answer will also be wishful thinking. so please forgive my wild speculation So far, the role of cryptocurrencies is still an alternative, and nothing more. Especially where I live, and maybe for 5 to 10 years credit still exists, where conventional transactions are still running. Even though technological sophistication is starting to spread in all directions, it will still be very difficult if a country still wants to take financing from a payments-based economy. I know that paper money is just paper with written and nominal pictures. The logic of thinking about paper money has actually become uncertain in some of the general public regarding the durability of the value behind it which is easy to print to your heart's content.

Back to the growth of cryptocurrencies, if we refer to developed countries, 5 to 10 years it will be very clear how they can implement it well. Paper money payments may disappear and the role of credit cards will obviously be replaced by digital money systems.

I don't think cryptocurrency will eliminate Visa/Mastercard payment methods. It's because they also provide digital solutions though there is a lot of limitations. You won't imagine a world without paper money at least for more hundred years. Even there is no paper money digital fiat will exist for every nation. This means a master or Visa card will exist this way. Rather than you would get the freedom to load your card through cryptocurrency. That would happen only.

Is CBDC a cryptocurrency? We may have a different view on this but I don't consider it as one. They are digital versions of fiat currency so no it won't just like how crypto cannot eliminate fiat.

That's possible that those payment methods will have their stable coins or they're going to rely on CBDCs by each country that they support. But I don't think that credit and debit cards are going to stop. The thing is that, the more payment methods are going to exist because of this adoption and there could be an adoption also from most banks and credit and debit cards and, one possibility is that they're going to add crypto as an option for it.

There's no need to eliminate credit or debit as this will remain to exist forever even when the centralized economic system will collapse. The thing is when you can spend your crypto through debit or using credit card that can be paid with crypto and why not? Eliminating anything will not solve the problem or make crypto even stronger. The main thing is crypto needs to be integrated with various service like this to make sure if it has more and more utility usage in our real life. These payment methods can be integrated with crypto. Some people are also using this right now with crypto

We’re talking about big companies here so I think crypto can’t eliminate them but crypto can compete with them. This is a competition, and the good platform will be on top while the others will stay below. Debit/credit card will stay and serve their purpose because that is the fastest way to access our money in the banks and the banks can’t die as well so for me they have to stay and we have to deal with this.

I'm not so sure yet since we all know that not all people used to using credit/debit cards or even crypto such as Bitcoin or Ethereum. I think demand will be divided or getting smaller and smaller each year. Businesses would try their best to cope up with the new technology such as Blockchain so I don't think really that this will be phased out in the future.

The new technology is under development and debit/credit card makers would try to catch with the demand the way we see it so does new regulations too.

Profit takers in the financial sector won't stop chasing users of conventional financial services. I used to think that there would be no lending services other than those offered by certain banks and agencies, and as it seems today that is very much possible in cryptocurrencies. Likewise C/D Cards, this service will gradually adopt blockchain technology so that customers stay at hand.

Bitcoin or altcoins doesn't replace fiat, so it will not eliminate credit and debit cards. Maybe credit and debit cards will be eliminated when CBDC has been widely adopted. To be honest we already can live with cashless society now, you only need a smartphone installed of your mobile banking application or your local e-money. You only need to scan barcode to pay anything, it's cashless.

it is possible that the need for credit/debit cards can be trimmed. if the use of Crypto in the world is getting bigger, so is the adoption for transactions that are getting wider. public confidence in the use of Crypto may increase.

it all depends on how crypto can be used and get a place as a transaction tool or not. if no function accepts crypto transactions, then people will continue to use the same tools.

Maybe the government will have CBDC, VISA, Mastercard, American Express will create their own stable coins, but to get out of the world completely cashless, I don't think it's possible. Cash and credit/debit cards will always be needed under certain circumstances.
Crypto needs the internet to be used but nowadays the internet in many places is really unstable and many people in my country they have difficulty using smartphones, it will be very inconvenient for them if they live in a world without cash.

For some reason I believe it will not be a legalize alternative for it. Its quite impossible to abolish debit/credit cards system and we all knew that all forms of government would not abort it anf shift to blockchain. Too many companies will be affected by it if ever we goes to that kind of scenario, banks would definitely fall to the ground as blockchain emerge like this.

can never be removed. visa, mastercard and others contribute to the government. so if they all disappear, the government will lose their income. and they will make every effort to keep them in use. one of them is limiting the influence of crypto. I believe its impossible that cryptocurrencies will going to eliminate the need of credit/debit cards in the future because this for me sounds like the question if cryptocurrency will going to replace Fiat. These debit/credit card had been part of lives of people and the company behind these are such a big and successful businesses and I would also doubt if government will going to allow this happen because of the revenue that these contribute to the country..

Anything is possible, but if you ask me about my point of view, I would say that cryptocurrencies will replace the roles of debit and credit cards, but not entirely, because for general payments it would be very difficult if not regulated, for example. money theft? how about after? Will the user resign themselves to the loss of their money? Of course not, in today's payment types, if something untoward happens like theft, it can all be tracked and then the service provider can block the thief's access.

It can't be done on the Public Blockchain, but it looks like it can be done on the Private Blockchain, therefore lately we often hear about CBDC, this is what will replace traditional finance in the future.

You are right cryptocurrency is performing better and secured alternative to fiat money services and using cryptocurrency to make payments are far better than using the traditional banking system, but I don't think visa or master card will seize to exist simply because cryptocurrency become an absolute replacement. This may not be possible and also we have already some companies who are offering crypto debits cards for online payment and pos.

A few things I'd like to mention is a merchant and business that slowly accepts cryptocurrenices are mainly dependent on which regulation pressure of the country. Some may accept it as a legal tender, some in the grey area, and in some cases it strictly prohibited. As of now, looking at how difficult cryptocurrencies are being used by a regular user and how most regular Joe is already getting used to using cards, I doubt the rate of demand cryptocurrenices payment are significant.

Regarding the future stance, cryptocurrencies won't likely completely eliminate credit/debit cards. If you mean CBDC, then it may be achievable noting how the government is able to control it.

You're right, after all credit/debit cards are easier to trace, unlike decentralized crypto. that's why the government prefers it. The tax generated from using a credit card is also very large. so it is very difficult to make crypto replace credit/debit cards, because there will be many parties preventing all of that from happening. but there is a chance that crypto will be used as an alternative choice. and I think at the moment crypto is moving towards that possibility.

It all depends on mass adoption. In countries where Bitcoin has been recognized as a legal tender, I think debit/credit cards are slowly becoming obsolete. I do not think there will be a complete elimination unless the banks close their services. In India, we rarely use debit cards nowadays due to UPI transactions but we are still using credit cards.

Smart contracts are here to solve the most common problems of current traditional finance. If you really deep dive into how it will really solve, it's really amazing.
Especially with credit/debit cards, I believe it is possible that cryptocurrencies will be more convenient, I don't agree it will eliminate because there are still lot of people are comfortable using traditional credit/debit cards, so we can't force them.

Once upon a time, people were shopping by barter. Later, antique coins appeared. As time passed, we started to use the paper money we use now. Currently, everyone is shopping with credit cards, and the use of paper money is decreasing day by day. We know that payment methods change over time.

Now this crypto revolution will give the solid reply to the governments and banks which are playing debth games from decades with innocent middle class people now these banks will have to accept blockchain technology and need to change its traditional structure about credit/debit card otherwise the day is not so far when crypto currencies will definitely eliminate credit/debit cards.

I don't think so because  as much as we see cryptocurrencies as a mode of money here to displace fiat and its tools like credit/debit cards... Cryptos themselves are hard to spend and credit and debit cards make it easy to spend.

You might say we have bitcoin atms and what not but these are limited to how and what coins can be used on them, which leaves these cards to be part and parcel of the future.

The way a credit card or bitcoin works is almost the same, he can transact without fiat, that is a function of the two similarities.
But here, bitcoin has a more unique and free nature than credit cards, but some countries still doubt bitcoin technology for transactions. Will one replace a credit card? I don't think so. The most plausible reason is that no matter how good the technology or the benefits of bitcoin with its lack of stability as a currency will make it difficult to estimate the price, even if it is used as a credit system, it will pay or receive inappropriately at first.

It's certain that Fiat and crypto will co-exist, since centralization can never replace decentralization (and vice versa). But I believe plastic cards whenever in the form of a debit or credit card, will cease to exist as crypto/Blockchain tech proves to be superior. Instead, people will conduct payments on their smartphone at any physical store of their choice using a government-issued digital currency. It will work the same way as a stablecoin, but backed by "trusted entities". By then, VISA and Mastercard would've changed their business model in order to stay ahead of the game.

The next part of the digital payments revolution will eliminate the need for smartphones as implants will contain all of your financial information. But this is something we won't see happen at least decades from now. Paper money is still being used worldwide, so credit/debit cards will be with us for quite some time. Just my thoughts ;D

Credit and Debit cards facilitate digital transactions in fiat currency. Currently, some crypto platforms are integrating crypto transactions in cards forms. Crypto project like Neox, for example, have a crypto card to facilitate transactions in fiat/crypto. IMO, I see card as one of the fast means of transactions between fiat and crypto - and since majority of our transactions are still in fiat, cryptocurrency transactions will not likely replace Debit/Credit cards for some years to come. I think Debit/Credit cards will be modernized (for example, Neox card) in such a way that they will facilitate fiat/crypto transactions. Currently, I think the use of Credit/Debit cards with crypto will co-exist for some years to come.

no, the need for a credit/debit card will always be there. in the future crypto will only be made as an alternative choice. even though crypto such as bitcoin, ethereum, and others will be legalized later, but remember the taxes that will be imposed will definitely be higher. Banks, Credit cards, Debit cards, Crypto payments can all coexist without disturbing each other, there is no need for one to eradicate the others because they all have their advantages and disadvantages, some platforms are already accepting crypto payments and that's very good.

Yes I guess theres no need to eliminate a kind of financial system circulating because these are already existed and each one has their own purpose or use that every people enjoy the use of it. All I can say is I think to have a credit/debit version cryptocurrency is one of the another project that I can say will be feasible but who knows if it will be successful. But so far I'd really love to use debit/credit and cryptocurrency altogether because each one has their own uses.

100% guaranteed. I keep saying that crypto is not against fiat, it is against banking and people need to realize this. I mean you may think that crypto vs fiat is a war that is fought for the past 10 years, but they are just alternatives to each other. Imagine how we have survived so long with Europe having euro now (individual ones before this) and USA has dollars, china has Yuan, Russia has ruble and many many other fiat, we just added one more to that and nothing more and it shouldn't bother fiat at all.

However, we are improving the banking system of it so well that after the DeFi hype last year, I am 100% sure that we are going to do very well in the future for sure and eliminate the need for credit cards.

It may be possible, but with the current condition of bitcoin it seems that replacing is impossible, but bitcoin can be an alternative to credit cards in the future, some considerations that I think bitcoin has difficulty replacing fiat are its unstable price, and its utilization for investment is much better rather than making a payments ecosystem. unless bitcoin becomes a stable coin and loses its decentralized character, but I think that's impossible.

Transaction fees.
Fraud.
Risk of chargeback to merchant.
CC Information Theft. Your credit card information is sent everywhere every time you make a purchase, and it's often stored in so many places that you worry it could be misused.

maybe with that problem maybe in the future many people will switch to crypto but that doesn't mean it can replace it completely.

If cryptocurrencies are not banned in that country then they can replace credit/debit cards in that country but even in my country banned crypto as payments so the chance it will replace the credit/debit card is very small. I'm just hoping that a lot of store will accept cryptocurrencies as their payment so the utilities of the crypto card will bigger and bigger.

If in the future there is a bitcoin atm, of course it can be a threat to credit cards issued by banks. It's just that gaining public trust for bitcoin ATMs is not easy, coupled with the price that continues to get speculation due to the influence of the law of supply and demand, it is difficult for bitcoin to replace credit cards as a means of payment. I don't think it can be eliminated easily because every person does not use cryptos still very less no percentage of people across the world are using cryptos So it depends on the adoption but we can say credit and Debit cards will lose traction in the long run. I feel but not sure most of the countries will launch their own stable cryptocurrencies then we can expect the dealing in cryptos will be higher but I can say in the coming year we will see the inbuilt multi-crypto wallet in smartphones for easy access to your coins.

This is the right approach. Plus, if we were fighting against fiat so much, we wouldn't be building stablecoins and so forth that are mimicking these fiat currencies people think we hate. The reality is the banking and DeFi did allow us to get closer.

When people realize this, when people could see that crypto is an alternative to banking and not an alternative to fiat, we will get better. if this comes true it would be great. but unfortunately that is not possible, how can a large company with millions of dollars in profits want to be eliminated. they would have prevented all of that. so credit/debit cards will always be there. what will make the difference is how people perceive it. if now they have no choice, but in the future they can choose many choices. they can choose to use crypto such as bitcoin, ethereum and other altcoins, or keep the old way by using a credit/debit card.

I think cryptocurrency will not replace credit or debit cards. Not in the near future. Despite the slow mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies in many applications, credit/ debit card has a different use case that people will still continue using them. I think both will smoothly co-exist in one way or the other will benefit both platforms. to become relevant to the business, the credit cards will utilize the blockchain to deliver a more secure and scalable service.

I don't know the reason for crypto to eliminate the debit or credit card while crypto itself being connected to be spent use debit and credit. Some people were also using this methods as a way to cash and put their money into cryptocurrency to add more fiat money in the circulation. Removing the debit and credit cards were totally non sense thing while at the same time it's really helpful for some people to help it to top up their crypto accounts. It is indeed an alternative banking, and I am quite shocked that people are thinking that crypto will replace fiat in the future. Remember that crypto, well most of it, are decentralized. Obviously government and crypto is not a good chemistry, even if such legalization was happening.

I don't think the existence and adoption of cryptocurrency will eliminate the usage of credit or debit cards because they have different usage and most individuals as well as some huge companies aren't familiar with cryptocurrency. It will be hard for crypto to replace debit cards which is actually a traditional payment method for most people. Crypto still needs more adoption and consumers also need to consider using it as a payment method first because some are aware but still prefer using banks and other methods because of its risk.

Banks and any other companies making money with the current Fiat system won't really like to have cryptocurrencies as the main payment mode and also it will be a big loss for them if it eliminates the banking card system because these payment processing companies are making good commission from the millions of transactions all around the world. This is sooooo possible, it is even silly to think that we still do not have it. First of all, debit cards are a thing in the crypto world and should be wildly available everywhere around the world and should be used by all of us. Imagine (and it is real, you do not even have to imagine) you keep all of your money in an exchange, all in bitcoin, and they give you a card for it, then you go out anywhere in the world and spend some money on some shop, your bitcoin is converted automatically to whatever fiat that nation uses and pays the shop owner just like a bank debit card. Isn't that awesome? You never need to use any fiat ever again or never have to hold it.

Credit card would be a bit more tough, but debit cards are out there and yet they are very limited, very very expensive (not even usable levels of expensive for some) and they are unfortunately not available in my nation and plenty of other nations.

Well, in this case, what you say is right, although for El Salvador things may be more different, because with support from the government it is possible that credit cards still exist but that credit cards based on BTC are with much more benefits, and I think that those countries and banks that support something like this could be very successful.

The traditional economy is still very booming, since it is clear the control that the governments have as well as the banks, banking has been a total success to maintain people's debts and I think that with the debt they have gained a lot, so it is difficult to undo a business model of many years.

Every difficult thing there will always be a way out if all relevant parties are willing to do it happily because cryptocurrencies in general can be used for certain needs and are also used as future investment assets with very good choices even though there are still risks in it.

Accepting cryptocurrency as a payment method is not legal at this time because each country already has its own rules and currency, so if you want to make a realization of cryptocurrency for payments, then there are several things that need to be changed by the state so that nothing conflicts with the basic rules of the country.

if there is a crypto currency whose value can be as stable as conventional currencies, it can happen considering that crypto transactions are easier and faster. let's say we only need a wallet on a smartphone then just scan the QR code at a store that provides payments using crypto.

In my own feeling I don’t think there is a possibility about cryptocurrencies replacing credit or debit cards sooner or later. It will likely exist in generations to come. However, I do agree about crypto as alternative payment in the form of stablecoins if credit or debit card isn’t working, but depends on the merchant though.

We have a lower literacy rate - not all the people have bank account nor the smartphone or the internet connection. At least not possible in coming 20 years.

Most merchants that "accept crypto" are using third party payment methods and are receiving converted fiat instead. I totally understand this as taxation with crypto payments is confusing and you probably end up paying way more taxes from them.

I don't see credit cards going anywhere, but technically there could be new blockchain system replacing current system but there are no such blockchains yet that follow regulatory rules.

Me too - this is not going to happen any time sooner. Maybe in coming days when we are dead and new generation takes over.

I do not agree that cryptocurrencies will eliminate the need for people to use credit/debit cards because Cryptocurency is only used by certain people and not many people understand the system applied to cryptocurrencies. Moreover, cryptocurrencies have a high risk that can hinder people's trust to use them. So cryptocurrencies cannot eliminate the need for a credit/debit card.

Right now it has been going slow, but that might be in the front page of the media that we are seeing. Surely there would be unreported news that people adopting crypto, since people do not want authorities to interfere their business.
I would establish any small business as I wish at my home then just adopt crypto as an alternative if not primary payment method.

This is not likely to happen. Just like there will be no replacement of fiat with bitcoin. The banking system and cryptocurrencies will coexist in parallel, without the possibility of replacing each other. Cryptocurrencies can offer an alternative, but not a replacement. Although banks, with the launch of CBDC may try to replace cryptocurrencies, as banks and the state have more leverage in such processes, they can just legally restrain the development of cryptocurrencies and it will be very difficult to resist, or again leave the legal field, but for cryptocurrencies, it will be a return to 2012, when cryptocurrencies were used mainly in the shadow sector.

I am sure and convinced that in the future cryptocurrency will replace plastic cards, because with cryptocurrency it is easier and there is no need to issue plastic to a bank card, and with cryptocurrency a smartphone and a wallet in it are enough, and today it is hard to imagine a person without a smartphone.

This is not going to be easy, just as you could in theory just pay with your wallet by scanning a QR code the same can be done with most of the bank applications that exist today, so at least in that aspect bitcoin does not offer an improvement over the current technology available to the consumers.

Bitcoin has many advantages over fiat like having real potential to become a store of value, being a good investment, it offers some additional privacy and so on, but at least right now bitcoin is not better than any bank application on the market today.

I don't think it will happen with so much hacking and leaking going on with people will still go on the mode of payment that will insure their money, banks are not going to go away but they can add Cryptocurrency to their system and they can co-exist, there are circumstances that bank can only play a role on transactions and there are circumstances that its much better to us Cryptocurrency than bank's credit or debit card, I don't see anything wrong if they can co-exist we are in a modern world a world where people are always looking for a better alternatives.

i am also not seeing in our lifetime that crypto will take-over the financial system. maybe the use of crypto will expand and grow, but the main payment system such as credit/debit card will remain. remember, not all people are amenable with crypto. some still prefer with fiat no matter what innovations in the payment sector is. they just want to stick with the traditional methods. you know what i mean?

The plastic card can still be alternative and there's no need to kill it. I personally using QR code transactions for my daily life and this is much more easier compared using the plastic card. Crypto currency can be spent used the app that was supporting the QR code payment system. This will much more efficient caused by anyone always had phone in their pocked to be used as a payment system as well. Smartphone has become a part of people's life

For cryptocurrency to eliminate credit/debt, it first far most need to compete with the merchant services (the way how business get paid for the goods or services from the customers) by convincing the businesses an extremely good reason to use this coin or token.    In the end  the businesses are the ones decides the fate and the value of coin or token.    Adam Smith "the invisible hand".     

This can happen in the future. Even now we've got more credit/debit cards through the which cryptocurrency can be used. It is all about the market integration. Countries always have difference of opinion over bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The banking sectors need to take initiative to integrate the usage of cryptocurrencies. This takes time and in future we can use the cryptocurrency debit/credit cards same as that we tap and pay with the traditional bank credit/debit cards.

I can't guarantee that it won't fully happen in the future, but as of right now, given the pace at which cryptocurrencies are being adopted globally, I doubt that this will be attainable in a few decades. Why? Because there will still be a government. Such an event won't take place due to the government's need for total control. However, if the majority of the top countries use and leverage the profit for economic development, this is still achievable. With additional nations adopting it, the entire world will eventually do so, I'm confident. Also currently, there hasn't yet been any formidable step to show that it will soon replace debit and credit cards.

I don't think that cryptocurrencies will eliminate the need for credit and debit cards in the future.  The government and banks will not allow it, though some applications (like financial mobile apps) may make debit and credit cards obsolete and for sure it won't be the cryptocurrency for the earlier reason I stated.

IMHO, I dont think so, because the debit cards and credit cards are not against each other since some functions from credit/debit cards and crypto are identical so there's no such word as close completion between the two platforms because both platforms can be adjusted depending on the situation they were applied. so I believe both services will share the market potential and survive in the future.

Will crypto eliminate the credit/debit card? Probably not, but will it take over the domination, most likely yes. Crypto more seamless than Credit and Debit card, however the biggest challenge is the credit score, most people using credit card to get credit score so they can get some loan from bank.

Yes, I have the same opinion as you regarding this topic. Look, I am also very comfortable using digital payment systems in lieu of using cash. Just imagine you have to pay a huge amount of cash now. It is really impossible to carry that cash. There would be several problems. But I can carry more than that amount without carrying cash. I just need to carry my smartphone and I can pay the amount easily. Though I am not a big supporter of credit or debit, they charge a very good amount for them, but what is a loss for me? If our country approved BTC, then obviously I would be very comfortable using BTC and Crypto. because it will be the easiest and safest. That's my overall opinion regarding this. Thank you.

what you say doesn't make sense to me because it's all bullshit. because it is impossible for Cryptocurency to eliminate the need for people to use Debit/Credit cards. so don't mix water and oil because they won't stick together. because not all people on earth know and believe in cryptocurrencies so that until now many countries do not have special rules regarding the circulation of cryptocurrencies.
