Title: AMD rig startup
Post by: S3300 on March 24, 2022, 06:51:52 AM
I'm sure some of you know how hard it is to tweak AMD cards, there are a few drivers issues that can come between you and you getting the best hash rate out of the GPUs, here are my questions

1. What is the best AMD driver for mining on the RX6000 series?.
2. Which OS works best for AMD graphic cards? Linux or Windows?

I haven't heard of problems with AMD drivers and mining on the RX6000 series. If you use the latest version of Hive OS or analogues, then you will only need to set the overclocking settings or select the recommended ones. For some LHR nvidia video cards, it is better to use windows for a larger hashrate.

As per your comment, I got a lesser hash rate on windows using my RTX3070Ti and get a better hash rate using hive OS, 54MH on windows 10 and 60MH on hive OS I believe that HiveOS is the best for Linux and AMD.

I think itīs your fault. Nearly all cards have nearly the same hashrates on both systems - depends maybe 2% or 3% some times but not more.

I was having a lot of problems with the Rx 6800 XT series and I was having the same overclock I have now yet they used to crash in the old motherboard which was a Biostar TB 250 with 6 Pciex1 slots.I was using risers, the latest versions of the risers and although it looked like everything was going well,it was only at 48 hour or a bit more before a crash.I tried all the miners with the same result.

When things changed for the good:

When I got the riserless motherboard Asrock H510 Pro Btc.I put the cards there, used the same overclocks as I told above and choose only lolminer this time which is running stable for more than 2 weeks without problems, the only interrupts is when power goes down, when we put a lot of other appliances on.I am using Windows but I once just tried HiveOS just because of the popularity and there the same thing,it ran stable for a lot of time.

Bottom line,if you want to get rid of troubles with AMD 6000 series is to get rid of this "I got 99 problems and one bad riser is all of them",for me switching to a riserless motherboard was the final solution.

I am running the latest adrenaline driver WHQL.

AMD graphic cards are trouble most times either new or old card, it depends on the motherboard you have at hand after purchasing AMD cards, most times you need to switch motherboard for things to work perfectly, I don't recommend AMD if you aren't tech-savvy yourself.

The polaris generation of AMD (RX 470, 480, 570, 580 and 590) was a pain to keep running 24/7 without any problems, specially in 5+ cards rigs  >:(
Nvidia is easier to install, overclock and maintain running, even now, this is a fact  :D

BUT

The new generation of AMD (series 6XXX) is not hard as polaris, I have 2x6600 and 6700xt) three cards, running smooth after initial config
I made a small adjustment with More Power Tool to save electricity and to make less heat, and them I made a config on Radeon Settings, saved and it's running fine
You don't have to deal with Bios Mod anymore, this is a good thing

I'm using both OS, Windows and HiveOS, and the drivers are:

Hive OS: A 20.40 (5.11.1001)
Windows 10:  21.30.23.04

Both are good

I sold my rx580 graphic cards after three months of mining because of higher heat generation and power consumption, I also uninstall driver too many times because of hashtags loss and instability, Nvidia cards give me more confidence and peace of mind, I doubt I will ever go back to AMD GPUs again.

I did not talk about all Nvidia video cards. For example, for the first RTX 3060 video cards, it will be easier to use Windows with the 470.05_gameready_win10 driver and a motherboard with x16 ports. But miners are constantly updated.

And so different are our experiences. For me, i have more trouble with nvidia, all my AMD rigs running very well for months.

That's pretty weird, you are the first person saying this as I've never come across such a comment before, if I may ask what type of issue are you having on Nvidia graphic cards?.

I'm curious to see which problems he had

I'm mining since 2017, and Nvidias are pretty easy to build and maintain running 24/7
Only Power Limit, Memory clock and sometimes Core Clock
I mined with 1060 3g and 6gb, 1070, 1070ti, 1080ti, I skipped RTX 2xxx and jump to 3060, 3060ti, 3070 and 3080.
The only problems I found is excessive overclock on memories, but just reduced and it was fine.

With AMD, as I said, I had almost all Polaris, 5600xt, 5700xt, 5700, 6600, 6700xt, and Polaris was such a pain to run:
Need bios mod, pixel patcher, adjust overclock, reduce voltage and were not stable enough like nvidias
with 5600xt and above the process was easier, but not like Nvidia

What trouble could that be? I've never had any problem with Nvidia cards before, not when I was a hardcore gamer and not when I am. a crypto miner now, Nvidia cards works smoothly no driver issues.
