Title: Best wallet for iOS which connects to your own node
Post by: Alexander_123 on March 29, 2022, 11:55:24 AM
Hey,
So I have my own node(Umbrel) and I am looking to setup a Lightning wallet that connects to that. I quite like Zeus for now, BW does not seem to be able to connect, does anyone have any other recommendations?

Another question I had, what do small merchants who are looking to connect to the LND use for payments? Do they tend to use WoS then send it to their cold storage at the end of the day? WoS seems to be very popular in Africa but not sure about merchants in NA

Thanks,

Alex

1. Have you looked into Zap wallet[1]? It should work.
2. What's WOS? Wallet of Satoshi? If you want to accept payments for both on-chain and LN, then I'd recommend BTCPayServer. See the LN documentation[2]

Hey I looked into Zap but it seems unsupported compared to say Zeus or Blue Wallet.

Yes Wallet of Satoshi, ok thanks I will look into BTCPayServer

So you are looking for a lightning wallet that supports IOS and requires its own node?

Yes you can check Zeus or Breez wallet and if you are looking for more lightning wallets check this link below

Take note only Zap wallet is the best if you are looking for the best lightning wallet and I don't know why you said unsupported. Would you mind checking this guide below

I am not using iPhone so I can't tell you more about best wallets, but you can check out this list of most Lightning mobile wallets below.
Go first for open source and non-custodial options, and do your own research about them:

The only reason I say it was unsupported since the iOS app has not been updated in a year, but I checked the Github and there is still some activity....so I stand corrected. However Zap only connects to your wallet on your node. I was looking for a non-custodial wallet which connects to my node for routing activities. I would then send the funds from my Umbrel node wallet to my new non-custodial wallet if that makes sense?

Thanks looking for a non-custodial wallet with both lightning and on-chain capabilities where I own my coins and can connect to my node...

That should work with Breez (https://breez.technology/). So far, it seems like it's the most feature-rich mobile Lightning wallet, especially since it has a developer menu which offers all of the low-level LND commands. So if something's not doable through the GUI, you can type out the command for it.
It does have the option to connect to your own node and the funds are non-custodial, meaning the application runs a full LND node and can create channels just like any other Lightning node.
Phoenix (https://phoenix.acinq.co/) and Muun (https://muun.com/) are also both non-custodial (I own my coins), but don't offer such low-level access where e.g. in Breez in case of an issue or something, you could literally go and manually force-close channels. Muun seems like a good option if you do a mix of Lightning and on-chain payments, since it keeps / moves part of the balance on-chain and another part off-chain. It should be practical for many users, however it often makes for more expensive Lightning payments (if the amount exceeds your 'internal LN balance', it has to be swapped on-chain with regular fees). A lot of time has passed since I last tried it though, so it's possible things have changed.
