Jk :P. It's been there since then. There is also an option to disable avatars and signatures (as advertisements) if i remember correctly. Hero/Legendary members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads; these people don't increase the impression stats for your ads. These are the roles you are talking about? From what I know it's for everybody, although I've found in a post from 2013 that back then it was only available to Hero members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=220366.msg2320198#msg2320198). Somewhere in my head I think that it's related to ads sometimes oddly breaking the view/browser, but I may also be very wrong in this. Still, this can be clue (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=216751): somebody has been complaining, but not about the ads, instead, the ad blocker...
