You can get a pretty good idea from reading these three links:

Merit & new rank requirements (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0)
Forum ranks/positions/badges (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?)  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178608.0)
FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2766177.0)

Essentially, Merits are used to denote posts that are, in general terms, worth reading as per the Meriter’s criteria, be it for being illustrative, helpful, controversial, novel, or whatever other reason behind. Their core use is for ranking-up, although it may also serve to access/restrict people from certain campaigns, as well as an implicit recognition factor.

You’ve currently got 4 Merits. These never decrease (except for on extremely rare cases related to cheating), and generate half the amount in sMerits (Sendable Merits). The latter is what you actually send to other people at will. In your case, having earned 4 Merits, you’ve also got 2 sMerits to send. sMerits do decrease when you send them, and increment the Receiver's Merit counter by the amount received.

i.e.
You received 4 Merits -> Meaning you also have 2 sMerits.
If you send 1 sMerit to a certain post (using the Merit Button), the Receiver will increase his Merit Counter by 1.
If you send 2 sMerits to a certain post, the Receiver will increase his Merit Counter by 2.
(and so forth)

Quoting the responses  for you incase you feel lazy  :-*

What is merit and what is it for?
Does it give any advantage?

What is Merit?

Merit is a new system created in order to reward quality contributions to the forum. Now to rise through ranks you will also need to acquire Merit in addition to Activity.

And how to earn it?

How do I receive merit?

You are awarded merit by people of the community if they find your post helpful or informative.

So many newbies has asked similar question,  it's good to ask a valuable question like this. Actually merit system is one of the criteria that elevate a user from the position of brand new to a higher rank, while activities is constant and is been given by forum system base on your consistent post making in the forum.

When a user lack earning merit the disadvantages will end up having a stunted growth like plant, so merit determine the growth of every user rank and especially when the activity is up to a specific rank.... how to earn a merit, the process is base on you intellectual engagement of cryptocurrency via finding or researching for what has not been disclose to the community that can impact fresh knowledge to newbies and already existing users... You earn merit through the following

1. Making a quality post

Merit, something of appreciation and evaluation from other members for you, where other members will reward you with Merit for you because you are already in this Bitcointalk Forum.

Does it give any advantage?
Of course, Merit can benefit you, in achieving a higher and established rank as the other members above tell you.

And how to earn it?

Hello :)

Merit in this forum is like an "award" that is given to you by other members here. What it is for? The actual function of the merits here is to rank up your membership once you accumulated certain amount required for each rank. In your case, you if you were able to get to 10 merits, your rank will be changed to "member". Ranking up is not just based on the merits you received though, you also have to have a certain amount of Activity that is required to rank up.

Yep, it gives some advantages, but it is somehow subjective (for me). One advantage is that if you join campaigns, it is more likely that you'll be paid higher compare to the lower ranked users. Also, some could see you a good member of this forum because of the merits you earned. It sometimes and somehow attracts trust of other users too.

Merits are earned through other users giving it to you, maybe for the quality of your post, uniqueness, helpfulness, etc. Giving merits is subjective, so anyone can give merits on anyone they want to send to as long as they have sMerits left.
Given that, even though a user posted a funny or a "dumb" post, he/she can still earn a merit if anyone likes to give it to him/her.

This forum is now the only platform in the world. Of course, In this places merit plays an important role in revealing how far ahead it is.

Merit indicates where you are based on your qualifications. Merit actually indicates how proficient and knowledgeable you are like ranking. Everywhere there is a position of how much knowledge is complete. According to him, the forum has introduced merit system to express the position he has to give.
It would not have been possible to find out how knowledgeable they are in this forum without this merit system. This is why we have given to the Merit Forum so that we can find qualified people and we will benefit from them.

You too will get merit if you check everything and post good quality.

Thank You. I hope you will benefit from the comments of many more like me and find out.😊

did you perhaps use google translate? not to be rude, but what you wrote is extremely hard to understand. but I do get the gist of what you are trying to say.

Use the smerit responsibly OP and goodluck learning here, try to ask more topics that you are confusing but better to hit the search function button and look for the topic first here you that comes to your mind before hitting post. Would save your time too.

I have never heard or seen this happen.

Has this rare case ever happened and what extreme cases of cheating can reduce merits?

On a few occasions, some sMerit TX were rolled back by the Admin, due to Merit abuse by a Merit Source (if I recall correctly) or being sent from a hacked account (*).

As far as I can remember, once or twice the TXs were deleted, whilst on a few more occasions, TXs with negative value were inserted into the system to counter the positive TX.

See negative TX values here for example (top of left list):

merit are like a reward given to a member upon the usefulness and quality of posts. merits are given by other members from their smerits. the number and quality of post are also important, because these will help the promotion of member in level or rank of membership. ones rank also will determine if one can partake in a campaign. its important we post educative and quality posts. for we are gaining and also giving out knowledge especially to newbies. merits could also be seen as encouragement for active participation. the most important thing is to help and educate others.

Welcome to the forum  :D

Regarding to your questions, I believe that you can answer them by yourself. It's very easy to find answers by searching on the forum or with search engines beyond the forum.

  • [Guide] Searching effectively (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5276341.0)
  • Some classic topics on merit were given above, you can read together with Welcome message (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5036308.0) from the admin
  • Honestly, I don't think I or others should repeat our answers here. You can spend a few minutes to hours (?!) to read all given topics. Answers are there and I don't think you need more than that

Merit is the forums feature used in differentiating active members to non active ones.

It is a feature that differente people's rank on the forum.

A reward for adding value to the forum.

And anyone can have this merit as long as you could prove that you have got value to offer to the forum, irrespective of date registered.

So it is an important tool in the forum that qualifies or disqualifies a user from doing many things (i.e you need at least 1 merit to rank you up to a "Jr. Member" which qualifies you to post an image) e.t.c

Merit is kind of a catalyst that encourage one in making making more of qualitative and informative threads or posts, and comments..

Based on a forum user perspective, if he or she sees your post to be one deserving of a merit or more then such user will them merit your thread or comment based on how helpful and informative your thread or comment is to the user.

Merit is another means of ranking up, in as much as you have Meet up with the number of posts attached to a particular rank.

For me, the advantage of merits, is that it's encourage an OP to put more effort and quality in style and diction in their next threads/post.

In as much as merit adds to a user growth it also motivates a user to be active, educative and contributive to the forum in an improved standard when compared to previous.

But I'll advise you focus more on the knowledge the forum offer on Bitcoin than basically on merit.

Merit is what you need to increase your rank and it is what you'll get when you post constructively in the forum or when you want to contribute in the forum. You'll know the rank requirements soon when you study about it. Once you have smerits then you can reward anyone as you see fit that the person you want to reward it is worthy of the merit. You better focus on learning and sharing then you won't have to worry about merit at all as long as you are contributing to the forum.

Hi :)

What is merit and what is it for?
Does it give any advantage?
And how to earn it?

Thanks

Firstly, let me start by explaining using facebook and Instagram analogy. Merit is just like the likes or love icon you click on a post on facebook or instagram whenever you find the post interesting or useful, it's same thing here on the forum, whenever people find your comment or thread educating or useful, they merit your post (either thread or comment). Same thing with you, you give out merit to a post whenever you find it useful, this is a way of compensating the author of the post for his problem solving skill.

Now, this is the advantage of merit: without merit, you can't move up the ladder of rank in the forum, you can check here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1689727.0) to see the various ranks available in the forum and the corresponding number of Activities and Merits required to attain them. Merits help you to scale up your rank in the forum and it could also partially describe your reputation on the forum.

Lastly, to earn merits, your goal should be to create quality (Educating) post, without this it might be difficult to earn merit on the forum.  You must be ready to contribute sterlingly to the forum.
You can also earn merit by participating in some activities that give merit as reward for getting the challenge right, example of this are: [Merit] Hey Newbies! Can You Sign A Message? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5300698.0), or/and
[Merit] Hey Bitcoiners! Can You Send Encrypted Messages? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5289839.0).
You can also earn merit through the magnanimity of some higher rank members who create threads to assist newbies and people who have little merit left to transit to the next rank, check here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5275032.msg60003654#msg60003654) for merit assistance, you might be lucky to be assisted!

Merits. These never decrease (except for on extremely rare cases related to cheating), and
Wow, really! I suppose this would be another avenue for some educating because;

My knowledge of merit, smerit and the merit system is one that comes without any form of decay or revocable nature to it except for merit sources that could have there merit bank reduced following a method that considers how many merits they are able to give out.
Looking at the quote as at above, I suppose that to mean cases where merits are reduced (talking about the extreme cases of cheating) and I stand to be corrected if am wrong but;

1. What are those cases?
2. Have any been exemplified in the forum?

Mean while, Merits and the merit/activity system are an upgrade  on the forum brought about by Theymos in order to contain the issues associated with spamming and low quality post from users. Hence, it directly influences one to make posts that either hits the nail on the head or are precise and constructive to explain a view. It could even be given on intelligent questions.

You must have missed them, since I did point some out on this same thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5394318.msg59847891#msg59847891

They were not really an amount that was anywhere near being significant in the overall picture, but some of the cases were clear-cut enough to get the Admin’s attention, leading to the TXs to be deleted or countered in a few cases.

Deleted: The sMerit TX was deleted and the counters readjusted.
Countered: A Negative amount TX was issued from user "0" (a virtual forum account used for these porposed, with Id 0 on the sMerit TXs).

Apparently you did call my attention to it and I have scanned through most of what I could find and I must say, the data set wasn't very much an easy read with no clear key to the later as per what the notations stood for or pointed out on the site and it only tales one to have gone through your forum post to grasp what is presented there in. Although, it surely came with some variables that discussed the issue in question.

It's nice to know that there could be an error actually. Having the system fully automated gave me the impression of a some worth perfect system. Well, its not perfect any way and Theymos surely did put it out in the clear cut situation of sent merit as described in the last referenced link as on the first page. Which ever way, yiu did open my eyes to this and I can say, I am aware now. Thanks.
