Title: Bitcointalk sell 10 ads or 9?
Post by: Little Mouse on April 15, 2022, 03:18:29 PM
I was checking the auction of bitcointalk forum ads slot and got something which is out of my understanding or possibly I'm missing something.

From 348 round-
Quote
Slots mBTC/Slot Person
1 50 Tibu
1 48 MoonbetEcosystem
2 42 nicosey
2 42 yahoo62278
2 40 Panxora_COO
1 36 Hhampuz

From 349 round-
Quote
Slots mBTC/slot Person
1 40 Tibu *
1 40 Panxora_COO *
2 36 nicosey *
4 32 Hhampuz
1 32 MoonbetEcosystem

Total slots for sale = 9
But I can see 10 ads here- https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

The ads are there from 349th round if I'm correct. So, why there are 10 ads while we can see the auction has 9 slots sold? Can someone point out what I'm missing?

From the link you posted it is clear that this tenth add slot is actually Factoid slots that cannot be rented. Therefore, it is possible to sell/rent only 9 add slots, so I do not see any mystery here.

Instead of creating a thread on this, why don't you ask thyemos directly in the already provided thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5393608.0)? In addition, I think theymos has explained that there are only 9 slots for sale, leaving only 1 for Factoid slots (0 chance at the moment) with the aim of Interesting facts, funny quotes, hints, info, and ads given away to supporters. Described here, of course: https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

But as we can see, there's the Luckychip.io ads. Why luckychip.io is in the 10th ads? I don’t know how it works but from what I understood, luckychip.io hasn’t participated in the last auction. How they are in that place?

That's the auction thread. I think it won’t be wise to derail that with my stupid question (may be).

Seems like a relevant question unless I completely missed an explanation from theymos somewhere.. it was only 9 slots in November:
https://web.archive.org/web/20211103142644/https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

And then 10 appearing in December:
https://web.archive.org/web/20211215162611/https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

edit: I missed this detail:.. the change was obviously intentional (assuming this text doesn't auto-change when the 10th slot is filled with something else..?)
From https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo:

I didn't know this changed, but indeed, I haven't seen the Factoids in a while. I'm curious why this changed, I don't think the forum has an urgent need for funding.

It was mentioned that it is only 9 but yet...
Nine are auctioned off. One is the factoid slot.

If we will check the final result and the ads in the adinfo page, this goes that..

# slot/active ad
1 satochip
1 cybertools
2 mercury wallet
4 duelbits
1 moonbet

and the remaining 1 is the lucktchip, which there's no one bid in the auction thread yet have a slot for the current round. Maybe theymos can tell...

Occasionally, someone who didn't win a slot in the auction still wants a slot very badly and PMs me. In these cases, I sell the 10th slot, and the factoids end up having "0 chance at the moment" for that round. This is not the normal way that things are supposed to work, so the 10th slot is sold at a premium. Recently I've been applying a premium of 20% over the highest (post-flattening) bid in the auction, so 43 mBTC in the most recent case, though somebody bought the 10th slot two rounds in a row, so perhaps I will increase the premium if someone requests the 10th slot again next round.

Can confirm. This, for once, actually happened to me.

It is generally a good business practice to have a little extra capacity than what you actually plan on utilizing in case someone wants to purchase extra (in this case, ad space). Doing so will keep your customers happy when you can sell to them, will prevent them from looking elsewhere (in this case to advertise), and will allow you to sell at a premium.
