Title: Sending bitcoin to ETH address on ERC20
Post by: vvic on April 28, 2022, 03:53:36 AM
So I have this question. I'm trying to pay to a merchant who wanted to use USDT at first, but I asked if he accepts bitcoins. He said sure. Sent me this 0x address which is ETH address, I've looked at it on blockchain says nothing about BTC, just gas fees and how much ETH that address have accumulated. The merchant sent me a screenshot from his wallet, which only has QR code with address and remarks:
"Send BTC only. This address doesn't support NFT. NETWORK ETHEREUM (ERC20) This deposit address supports ERC20 BBTC tokens. Please ensure your destination address supports BBTC tokens under the contract address ending in 541".  Being a bitcoin maximalist, I never got into ETH and smart contracts and atomic swaps and all that.  I've looked up BBTC some baby Bitcoin shitcoin that is worth exactly $0. So, the question is does this work? I don't think core wallet even allows to send to 0x addresses. Should I just say give me an actual BTC address?

No it doesn't work. BBTC is very different from BTC and WTH, he's dealing with crypto but doesn't know bitcoin? every cryptocurrency users must know bitcoin.

I suggest that you should cancel the transaction and run away fast as you can. that alone was major red flag that he was a potential scammer. if you still want to transact him, use an escrow for a safe transaction. anyway that is my tip for you. be safe out there and trust no one especially on the internet. Good luck!!

thanks, yeah, I didn't send any funds to that address. although amount was quite tiny (just $25) I still don't want to waste it like that

You are lucky since the address format is invalid for bitcoin so you can't waste any coins accidentally.
But also even if it were the same, you still wouldn't be able to send bitcoin to another chain since the BBTC is a token on another chain and the only possible way is to sell your bitcoin first and buy that shittoken then send that instead.

The ERC20 token "BBTC" in the screenshot must be "Binance Wrapped BTC",
its contract address is 0x9BE89D2a4cd102D8Fecc6BF9dA793be995C22541.

Basically, it's a token with same value as BTC but only for the supported exchange; if sent to Binance, they will credit it as a Bitcoin deposit.
However you can't send real bitcoins from a Bitcoin wallet.

I don't know if he wanted you to send him internal transaction from same exchange you are using, but you can do that to save on fees.
There are many wrapped tokens that claim to be bitcoin, so it can get confusing and you would need to buy ethereum first and than this token before sending him coins like this.
It's just a waste of money on fees, so you can ask him if he accept LN or real BTC.

It's interesting that I can't find this BBTC shitcoin listed on Binance exchange, but only on Hotbit, Curve and ZKswap, there is almost zero volume, and this could be just one more worthless scam.
This is information I got from Coingecko website, and on CoinMarketCap it's not even listed anymore, but looking at etherscan transactions are still happening on blockchain.
For me all tokens that claim to be Bitcoin on different network are just worthless junk.

-snip-
It's not meant to be traded that's why it's not listed there.
It's only an alternative means to withdraw/deposit/transfer Bitcoin through their so-called "Networks" which are actually Bitcoin-value-equivalent tokens in various blockchains including their Binance Smart Chain; in OP's case, Ethereum ERC20 token.

Those tokens are useless outside of the supported exchange.
