Title: Drastic difference in hashrate between two similar GPUs
Post by: Dreen on March 27, 2014, 05:20:20 PM
I am a gamer using his rig to mine when idle. About a year ago I was getting ~500Mhs using a Radeon HD7970 (http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/product_index.aspx?pid=1463&lid=1), then because of a technical issue I stopped mining for a few months and eventually replaced the Radeon with GeForce GTX770 (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4629)...

...on which I am currently getting ~130Mhs.

What follows may be quite a dumb question: did anything change (eg some network property), that would explain a much lower hashrate on a better card? Or is there something wrong with my setup?

I'm using: BTCGuild/BitMinter, GUIMiner/BitMinter, Win7

You are mining bitcoins with GPUs which no one informed today would be doing due to the massive difficulty in the current bitcoin network which is why no one's around to help any more. If you want to get back into bitcoin mining affordably, buy yourself a USB stick like the AntminerU2 instead which does 2GH for much less cost than your GPU and use your GPU for graphics the way it was intended.

OR try one of the other algo's like scrypt or scrypt-n.
For now, its still possible to mine those with a GPU

The Answer is in your post.  You changed cards the 7970 is MUCH more efficient at mining.  Just because it is a "better" card for gaming doesn't mean it is for mining.  You will be able to increase your hashrate some with cudaminer, but a 770 will NEVER compare to a Radeon 7970.

Also as mentioned video cards eat more power than they can produce mining SHA coins and you should look into scrypt type alt coins, even then if you are paying for electricity a maxed out 770 running at 200Kh/s+ will barely break even at .10 kWh
