W.I.P. [List] Vanity Wallet Generation - threads, how to & links

[Downloads (#post_Downloads)] | [How To's (#post_howto)] | [Discussion Threads (#post_threads)] | [External Links (#post_external)]

This is a thread to list the various vanity wallet generation threads with links on how to and downloads of various programs.

First off you'll need a really really good quantum computer PC graphics card, or the PC's CPU depending on what you want to do.

  • VanityGen / OclvanityGen

*edit* this may not be the current version.

    Current version: 0.22

Windows x86+x64 binaries here (https://github.com/downloads/samr7/vanitygen/vanitygen-0.22-win.zip).  PGP signature here (http://insight.gotdns.org/~samr7/vanitygen-0.22-win.zip.asc)

Get the source from GitHub (https://github.com/samr7/vanitygen).  Includes Makefiles for Linux and Mac OS X.

What are the other methods of generating vanity addresses?

The original method of generating vanity addresses is a patch to the official bitcoin client created by Gavin Andresen.  Details can be found here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1387.msg283882#msg283882).

Forum user Nyhm created an in-browser vanity address generator (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=76038.0).

There is a new vanity address generator for Android (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=101612.0).
  • (Life Boat) OgNasty?
  • I would like to present a new bitcoin prefix address finder called VanitySearch. It is very similar to Vanitygen.

    VanitySearch is available from https://github.com/JeanLucPons/VanitySearch

Benchmarks for various hardware (By DaveF):
    https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5112311.msg50823897#msg50823897

There is still lots of improvement to do.
Feel free to test it and to submit issue.

How do I import the private key into bitcoin?

If you wish to spend coins received on a vanity address created by vanitygen, you must import the private key into a bitcoin client.  There are two popular methods of doing this with the standard Satoshi bitcoin client:

Use the importprivkey command.  To do this, select Help -> Debug Window, and in the window, on the bottom line, enter importprivkey <privatekey>, e.g.

Code:
importprivkey 5J4XJRyLVgzbXEgh8VNi4qovLzxRftzMd8a18KkdXv4EqAwX3tS

Jackjack's pywallet script (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34028.0) is an all-in-one tool that directly modifies the wallet.dat file.  This works with a normal, unpatched bitcoin client, but does require Python with the bsddb package.

  • Note:  This is under active development, currently on an experimental branch offering 5x speedup (https://github.com/nym-zone/segvan/tree/sipa_grind).  I will post further updates when appropriate.

    By (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2864073.msg29418075#msg29418075) popular (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2864073.msg29490833#msg29490833) demand (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25804.msg26877499#msg26877499):

    Github: https://github.com/nym-zone/segvan

The code for this is reasonably solid, notwithstanding some inelegance in main() which will be refactored.  On FreeBSD, it’s been my dogfood for over six weeks; I have also built it and tried basic functionality on Linux.  But it needs error, warning, and usage messages—plus the manpage!

Just adding the comment that yes I do use vanity addresses, but there are privacy concerns to keep in the back of your head due to address reuse.
Or even just similar addresses. If I generate 1000 addresses that start 1DaveF and just use those it's going to make someones life who would want to track me easier.

True.  But there are also various other reasons for using a vanity address.  LoyceV has/had vanity wallet addresses as "retirement" addresses for donations to his children 1boy... 1girL... if the funds sit there for a very long time (then perhaps go through a coin mixer) most people won't even notice when the funds move.

Similarly, donations could be sent (one payment at a time) to 1Give...

The justifiable uses are endless.

They're great for public usage, say a donation address or a payment address from an online service.

That works both ways: you can use a popular vanity address to make it look like it's owned by someone else.

I won't post them, but I found 55 addresses with "1DaveF". Some not even at the beginning (and this list isn't complete):

If always use 1DaveF here for stuff I sell and sig campaigns and whatever, and with a bit of looking through the blockchain see that I send BTC to binance from those addresses there is no real privacy lost since I posted the address for all to see.
NOW, you and I do a private deal. If at that time I give you a 1DaveF address to pay me and it goes to binance it's pretty much a given that it was me who got the funds at the 1DaveF address. That was the point I was making. If you post an address in public it's one thing. Using similar vanity addresses does (IMO) chip away at privacy.

Since this is not the main point of this thread if we want to keep talking about it, we should probably start another one discussing this.
