Title: [Guide] Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux Install - Node Post by: n0nce on June 08, 2022, 01:54:40 AM Node Install Guide
This is part of my Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux install guide. See here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5401729) for the prerequisites. I planned to just do a Debian version of my OpenSUSE Full Node install guide (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5366854). However, it takes an incredibly long time to build and I got build errors, to the point where I got frustrated and would recommend to fetch the binaries from https://bitcoincore.org/en/download/. You can verify your download through the instructions on that webpage. More detailed instructions about PGP and signatures can be found on https://bitcoin.org/en/full-node#linux-instructions. Keep in mind that I assume the node was already booted at least once off of the original microSD; hence, the NVMe and the Bitcoin data folder on it are already initialized. In case it's needed, I'll add instructions for how to work with a freshly initialized SSD in a later post in this thread. [1] Create unprivileged bitcoin user and set a password for it. Code: sudo useradd -m bitcoin [2] To mount NVMe drive, edit /etc/rc.local and add the following. Remove exit 0 if it exists. Code: #mount nvme drive [2.1] Create mount point Code: sudo mkdir /media/nvme [3] Switch to unprivileged bitcoin user. Commands should output bitcoin (user) and /home/bitcoin (working directory). Code: su - bitcoin [4] Download latest build (replace URL accordingly) and the rpcauth.py script. Code: cd /home/bitcoin [5] Unpack the binary folder. Code: tar xvf bitcoin-23.0-aarch64-linux-gnu.tar.gz [6] Create random username and password to access core via RPC. Note down the rpcauth=xxx:yyy line somewhere. Code: python3 rpcauth.py the_username_of_the_user_you_want cleartext_password_unique_long [6.1] Delete history, otherwise the password remains in history file in cleartext. Code: history -c [7] Create Bitcoin config file Code: mkdir ~/.bitcoin [8] Fill it like follows: Code: daemon=1 [9] Exit back to admin account Code: exit [10] Install Bitcoin Code: cd /home/bitcoin/bitcoin-*/ [11] Still logged in as sudoer, create Bitcoin service: Code: sudo nano /usr/lib/systemd/system/bitcoind.service [12] Contents should be like shown: Code: [Unit] [13] Enable & start service Code: sudo systemctl enable bitcoind.service [14] Check if running Code: sudo tail -f /media/nvme/Bitcoin/debug.log [15] Exit with Ctrl+C. Your node should be picking up the already finished initial block download and connect to peers just as always. Otherwise you'd have to query using Bitcoin Core all the time and can't just use your mobile and desktop applications for that. [1] Install dependencies; make sure you're logged into admin and not bitcoin. Code: sudo apt install clang cargo rustc tor [2] Download and build electrs as bitcoin. This can take roughly half an hour (compared to ~10 minutes on a $50 'old laptop' node). Code: sudo service miner stop [3] Create electrs config file Code: nano electrs.toml [4] Enter the following: Code: cookie_file = "/media/nvme/Bitcoin/.cookie" [5] Log back out into your sudo account, and open the Tor config file. Code: exit [6] Add the following contents, preferably in the right section (somewhere where there's HiddenServiceDir stuff commented out). Code: HiddenServiceDir /var/lib/tor/electrs_hidden_service/ [7] Start up Tor and fetch your electrs Tor hostname. The hostname can then be entered in wallets like Wasabi and BlueWallet settings. Code: sudo systemctl enable tor.service [8] Create a service so electrs starts on startup Code: sudo nano /usr/lib/systemd/system/electrs.service [9] Enter this information Code: [Unit] [10] Start the service Code: sudo systemctl enable electrs.service [11] Check that it's running. This should return the electrs version. Code: echo '{"jsonrpc": "2.0", "method": "server.version", "params": ["", "1.4"], "id": 0}' | netcat 127.0.0.1 50001 Title: Re: [Guide] Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux Install - Node Post by: n0nce on June 08, 2022, 01:56:01 AM Core Lightning

Similar procedure as before. Code: sudo nano /etc/tor/torrc [3] Below the other hidden service, add this info for Lightning. Code: HiddenServiceDir /var/lib/tor/lightningd_hidden_service/ [4] Then restart Tor and retrieve the new v3 Tor hostname for your Lightning installation. Copy it somewhere so you have it handy in step 7. Code: sudo service tor restart [5] Log into bitcoin user and download + build Lightning. v0.11.1 is the currently latest version. Code: su - bitcoin [6] Create Lightning config. Code: mkdir -p /home/bitcoin/.lightning/bitcoin [7] Enter the following. Alias can be chosen at will! :) Replace onion_address_you_got with the hidden service hostname you got in step 4! Code: daemon [8] Log back out of the unprivileged bitcoin account to install Lightning and create the service. Code: exit [9] In the service file, we need the following contents. Code: [Unit] [10] Start the Lightning service Code: sudo systemctl enable lightningd.service [11] To check if it's running, we can use the lightning-cli command as bitcoin user with any of its parameters. Hey, thanks for chiming in! I linked both guides to the common 'base' guide on top of which either (or both) of the guides can be applied. Maybe the hyperlink is too small, but it's there. ;)(run as root) Code: setenforce 0 See here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5401729) for the prerequisites. I am pretty sure Armbian has SELinux disabled by default. I planned to use openSUSE, since I have had good experiences with it as a node OS. Unfortunately, the SBC used by Futurebit is an Orange Pi 4 (http://) which doesn't have great software support, so for best chances of success I stick with Armbian (http://), which is what Futurebit ships (just an older version of it). Honestly, I would have preferred something a little 'more enterprise' like openSUSE (or CentOS, why not) - however availability of compiled operating systems for this SBC is severely limited. I could have compiled something myself, but these guides are aimed at people who bought the device as an 'all in one solution' (as I mentioned, it was advertised like that), but who to this day can only run Bitcoin Core without Electrum or Lightning on it (so rather useless besides 'help the network').Title: Re: [Guide] Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux Install - Node Post by: btctotoro on November 13, 2022, 09:50:45 AM Core Lightning [1] Install dependencies Code: sudo apt install autoconf automake build-essential git libtool libgmp-dev libsqlite3-dev python3 python3-pip python3-mako net-tools zlib1g-dev libsodium-dev gettext [2] Create another Tor hidden service for C-Lightning. I am pretty new to linux and working with it, but I thought I did a decent job getting through the steps you outlined. However, I got to the point where I did: sudo service lightningd start, and I got the following message: Failed to start lightningd.service: Unit bitcoind.service not found Any ideas or help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, would love to dive into lightning. Thanks again I see you posting all the time and find you to be very helpful to the community. Title: Re: [Guide] Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux Install - Node Post by: n0nce on November 14, 2022, 07:54:48 PM Hi N0nce, Very welcome! Indeed, it seems that 'Apollo OS' doesn't use a Systemd (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systemd) service to start up Bitcoin Core, and instead starts it headless using screen. ::)Thanks so much for this guide. I.e. sudo systemctl daemon-reload?Oh, also I should mention to replace bitcoin user with futurebit's default user, unless you created the bitcoin user yourself.. If you don't have the bitcoin user, this command should have failed, though: su - bitcoin. Also make sure to cat /home/bitcoin/.lightning/debug.log to check if Core Lightning has an issue. Of course, if you didn't install it under the bitcoin user, but e.g. futurebit-user (not sure about the default futurebit username right now), the path would be: /home/futurebit-user/.lightning/debug.log Title: Re: [Guide] Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux Install - Node Post by: btctotoro on November 15, 2022, 11:58:46 PM Hi N0nce,
I did notice the difference in the guide between creating the 'bitcoin' user. I believe I accounted for that in following the guide step by step and just used the futurebit user where necessary. I just tried briefly to make the update you suggested to the debug file, however it is still not working. I'll need to dive in a bit more tonight once my kid is asleep, maybe try again from scratch. Thanks again for your help with a noobie like myself trying to fully utilize my apollo :) Title: Re: [Guide] Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux Install - Node Post by: n0nce on November 16, 2022, 09:09:30 AM I just tried briefly to make the update you suggested to the debug file, however it is still not working. You shouldn't modify the debug file (doesn't hurt if you try, just won't do anything); it's made for you to look at and identify a possible issue. That's why I recommended to output its contents with cat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_command); but probably, tail -100 debug.log (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tail_(Unix)) would be a better idea; no need to output the whole file. Really appreciate working through this, learning a lot regardless :) Just reading; such logs are plain English and tell you exactly what's going on.Some logs prepend a short label like 'INFO', 'DEBUG', 'ERROR' to allow people to scan it more quickly. Errors are usually towards the end (because they cause the binary to exit); therefore I recommended the tail command. In this case, the error is: bitcoin-cli not found. I don't understand why FuturebitOS ships without bitcoin-cli. It's a small utility to interact with Bitcoin Core (bitcoind). Sure; it's not strictly needed for Futurebit, since they use RPC directly, but it's such a small binary that they might as well leave it in and prevent users such headache. You could download the latest build and install bitcoin-cli from there: Code: cd /home/futurebit Like the log file states, you can verify if it worked like this: Code: bitcoin-cli echo 'hello world' If it exits without errors and echoes back 'hello world', Lightning should start up as well. :D Title: Re: [Guide] Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux Install - Node Post by: btctotoro on November 16, 2022, 05:14:19 PM Hi N0nce,
I followed the steps you outlined to install bitcoin-cli. Doesn't appear to have worked, unfortunately. I am getting the same error after installation in the debug file and when I ran bitcoin-cli echo 'hello world', I got the following: error: Could not locate RPC credentials. No authentication cookie could be found, and RPC password is not set. See -rpcpassword and -stdinrpcpass. Configuration file: (/home/futurebit/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf) I'm thinking I don't actually have bitcoin-cli installed as when I entered the command sudo install -m 0755 -o root -g root -t /usr/local/bin bin/bitcoin-cli, the command line simply reloaded to the base user and nothing was communicated about installation. I tried tweaking your instructions so that I was in the folder with bitcoin-cli: cd /home/futurebit/bitcoin-23.0/bin sudo install bitcoin-cli But I got the following error about suffixes, unsure of which one to use after reviewing the help install --help text (if this alternative would even work for installing bitcoin-cli): install: missing destination file operand after 'bitcoin-cli' Try 'install --help' for more information Title: Re: [Guide] Futurebit Apollo BTC Custom Linux Install - Node Post by: n0nce on November 16, 2022, 09:08:49 PM Hi N0nce, No, no, that all looks good. It just means Bitcoin Core is running as a different user. I get that when running bitcoin-cli as a different user than the actual Bitcoin Core bitcoind daemon.I followed the steps you outlined to install bitcoin-cli. Doesn't appear to have worked, unfortunately. I am getting the same error after installation in the debug file and when I ran bitcoin-cli echo 'hello world', I got the following: error: Could not locate RPC credentials. I seriously hope it isn't the case, but it is possible that on default Futurebit OS, Core runs as root. To verify, try sudo bitcoin-cli getinfo. If my suspicion holds true, you would need to create RPC credentials like the error message suggests.
