Title: Price at time of transaction?
Post by: Bitcoins101 on August 07, 2022, 02:29:51 PM
Are there any block explorers that will show you the amount in dollars at the time of transaction?

Yes, Many block explorers offer that. For Blockchain.com, lookup for your TXID and then scroll down in the details until you find "Value when transacted".

You can use blockchair.com (http://blockchair.com).
It shows the value of inputs and outputs at the time the transaction was made.
It also calculates the "total spent" and the "total received" considering the value of the funds sent/received at the time of transactions.

I think most of the block explorer have this kind of feature. Either way, aside from blokchain.com as above mentioned blockchair.com has this feature too. In the "Amount transacted" there is question marked with pop up description saying "USD value at the time of transaction".

Edit: blockchair was mentioned too seconds after i posted lol.

You can use Blockchair.com
For example: https://blockchair.com/bitcoin/block/748404
It has portfolio tracker too: https://blockchair.com/markets

In addition, if you use a non custodial wallet like Electrum wallet, you can see price of Bitcoin at the time you make any transaction
https://electrum.org/
Click on Tools > Preferences > and check on 2 options
- Show history rates
- Show capital gains in history

Most block explorers do that.
I personally use mempool.space (for its ease of use). It just display the values in btc by default. To see the transacted amounts in usd just click/tap on the amount field and it will display the USD value.
Blockchain.com explorer works the same way but I do not recommend using it.

With doing this, you will see the current USD value of inputs and outputs. OP wants to see their value at the time the transaction was made.

The problem with blockchain(dot)com is the fiat "value when transacted" is only for the whole transaction so if it has a change, it's included to the value as well.

You have been given accurate information needed. You can use https://www.blockchain.com/explorer?view=btc or https://blockchair.com/.

If you use blockchain.com (the first link), the bitcoin sent or received or the block you are checking would be estimated in current BTC/USD pair price. As the bitcoin price is changing, so the value of the amount transacted will be changing based on the recent bitcoin price in USD.

If you use Blockchair.com, the bitcoin transaction would be estimated in BTC/USD pair as at the time the transaction was made, the value will not change to the present bitcoin price in dollar.

You can decide to use which one you think is better for you. Some people will prefer to use blockchain.com explorer just to know the present price of the bitcoin transacted at certain time in the past, while some people will just prefer blockchair.com because it would retain the old price when the transaction was made, just like when solving dispute and estimating bitcoin price in US dollars.

Electrum wallet and Bitcoin core saves you the stress of visiting Blockchair or other block explorers in that you can check the amount of your transaction in dollars and other currency for (electrum) without leaving the convenience of your wallet. I am thinking blockchair and other block explorers are basically used by mobile wallets.
