Keep or sell ethereum before the merge?

I've made some researches and found plenty of rumors saying that ethereum will dump after the merge and why's that? (short term)

Keep might become the best choice to anticipate if there will be a hardfork coin and that's free money


Don't you even hear this? people bought in the rumour and sell for the news? that's what will be going to happen with it. A correction was a common thing after the merge already happened but you must also remember if the upcoming update will give ethereum hardcap supply and so the impact must be for long term.

I suggest to split your holdings, Keep a part of your holdings that you are willing to risk and take profit some just to make sure you are safe and minimize your risk what ever happened to the price. Right now holding Ethereum is a gamble because just like you, Many traders is just speculating whatever you are thinking and this the reason why the price is unpredictable right now. There’s a chance that Ethereum will really dump after the merge including the crypto market because that hype news start this minor crypto recovery. Everything might fall apart or there will be a massive fomo buy after the merger finish.

I think after the merge of Ethereum it will go up and will make a new ATH. So before taking any decision you should research by own and decide what you want to do or you can sell a small amount before the merge. It's all about depends on you.

It's too good to be true. Don't you think bitcoin will always be sitting at the bottom to see that happened? I meant yeah you can predict it to happen but ethereum can't leave from impact created by bitcoin. Ethereum was doing a big update but i shall remind you that if that will give short term impact.
 The fact that if people must also aware if ethereum will not reach new ATH if bitcoin will not reach new ATH first. Bitcoin first and then ethereum.
I never see ethereum could decouple from bitcoin even when there was a huge update like burn or merge

IMHO, I think you must hold it til the planned merge is complete because according to gossip around the cryptocurrency communities it will add more value to Ethereum just like what most people said, so keep holding your Eth, Plus bonus if the hard fork will result in a new token? of course, it will be free money if it was successfully done. who knows right? so we better wait and see!    

Well, do you believe those rumors, when carrying out your research you would do much better to avoid rumors, and instead go for verified and authentic information, in this case you'd have to read what ethereum intend to do actually with this merge, and decide for yourself if it will positively affect their network or not. Having said that, if you are asking this sort of question, do not expect too much from it, users would only tell you what they think, whether verified or not, and more often than not, people will tell you exactly what they have done, for example, those that have sold will advise you to sell, whilst those that haven't sold, will tell you not to; so it is up to you mate, DYOR.

Regardless of the rumors, I personally would not sell of my ETH holding. I do not believe that its price is going to crash after the merge. But as we always have naysayers in the market, we may see a little impact temporarily but that will give me another awesome opportunity to do DCA and bring down the buying price.

So no selling for me! There are only two coins in the market that we can trust. Bitcoin and ETH. Rest all are shitcoins.

Keep, this is one of the easiest way to get extra money off crypto without doing anything, it has happened in the past years with BTC so extra money isn't bad I believe, also with proof of stake algorithm many whales will start staking right away, this should make Ethereum grow a bit better in value through this bear market.

I don't own any significant value in ETH myself but if i would already own Ethereum right now i would not sell it i think. It is definitely true that the first effects of the news that the merge will happen soon have already worn of again in terms of the price. Back then when the news became pulbic that the merge is coming quicker than expected the prices rose up quickly from 1700$ to 2000$ per ETH. Now we are down to levels below 1500$ again though as the overall market conditions are just still not good.
If the merge will be successful then i think the price will at least not drop and as time passes the price of ETH should slowly but surely climb again.

As the cryptocurrency market is so unpredictable these days, there's no perfect advice whether to buy, hold or sell them. You just have to be prepared on whatever the outcome is after the merge when it comes to managing your risks.

Keep if you plan to hold ethereum for a long time, because in the future, this project will still recover after a possible drawdown. Sell ethereum if you don't want to keep it for long and now might be the best time to get rid of this asset, which could become cheaper due to the merger. Hold your Ethereum before the merge takes place unless you don't care about making more money, I don't have money to buy 1 ETH but I will still buy some just to get some shares from the new fork coins, a dollar is still money.

I personally prefer to hold it in because a rumor is still a rumour, don't believe in rumours. But if you want to sell now, that's your decision.

you need to do some research on this forum too, maybe you get an analysis from someone who hates ethereum so you are doubtful, I think ethereum has good potential in the future as a bitcoin competitor too, everyone is waiting for the success of the ETH merger, so keep holding on to ETH the same as I still hold it

Could be dump or could be an opportunity for better profits. However, the third wheel suggests that all the miners in the world will wait until this happens and they would love to see ETH go up a little more and as soon as this happens then they might sell out as much as they could to recover their profits. Since with changed algorithm they wont be much useful and compensation does not seem to be viable option here since it’s not like ETH would be able to give dividend or something.

Best choice is to wait until we close to the timelines of merger and be quick to go on crazy sell after this happens.

The merger is going to have both a positive and negative effective on it , in the Sense that weak hands will want to sell out of fear. So, To be on a safer side, it is advisable for you to sell part and leave some, so you don't miss out of a potential pump.

It will be better to sell before Merge. We can see very huge volatility in Ethereum and we should save our money. We will get many opportunities of taking profit but if we loss here here then it will take so much time to recover. Our first strategy is to be safe trading. If you understand cryptocurrency very well, most times pricing-in of a coin comes before the event not after. Asides that bear market at the moment we can only see correction in ethereum after the merge, price pump are not meant to be predictable except for such news. If you do any research you wont see anything that proves any imminent breaking of ATH, except you check with the market optimist, and that is their job to set people up to catch the falling knife.

Why do I have to sell before the merge happens? Is there anything to worry about? I don't think that there really is.

That's normal, there's the rumor that the price might surge but everyone who is for the short term money, they'll for sure going to sell and that's not a thing for you to be worried about.

Usually, the price will up before the update and will go back to its normal price after the update. With the ETH merge once it become successful, you can expect more pump after that, so have a good choice.

If you always believe in rumors and you believe in FUD, then, you will never have an exact investment that will be worth it to you. Ethereum is top altcoin, best altcoin. Many people will wait for the rumor and spread many FUD again to make others panic. And what do they do? They will buy more and more Ethereum at a very low price happily, save them and keep them the for long term. That is how the market works based on rumors.
So, for me personally, I have high trust in Ethereum, even after merge, it is better to keep them for long-term investment than sell them right now, moreover the price is still too low to sell. No one can give you an accurate recommendation not only on ETH, but also on other coins, including bitcoin. But there is a high probability that if you hold ETH, then after the merger, if a new coin appears, you will receive ETHW for free. I am thinking about "buy the news, sell the rumors". In this case, the Ethereum will not pump on the day of the event(The Merge) or after the event but it will happen before the event (The Merge), but the question here is when also, I am thinking about the pump for almost 50% before of Ethereum from $1,000 - $1,5000 was already the effect of the event (The Merge), and as The Merge is fast approaching, volatility or dumps on Ethereum seems increasing also.

I find those rumors to be unfounded, the only way in which I could see ethereum dumping after the merge will be if there was some kind of issue that forced developers to delay this process, and in that scenario people will get very upset about that event and we could see the price of ethereum crashing and probably driving the market down with it, but personally I do not think that something so bad is going to happen so I think the best decision that you can take is that at least for now you keep holding your coins.

I stay strong and positive for ethereum, i don't care what happens to ethereum, for now i'm more happy in storage not selling, I'm sure ethereum has a long way to go in the future, so I'm still committed to investing and saving, I don't think now is the right time to sell.

This is exactly the position OP must take, just as i told them in my earlier response in this thread, if you invest in a project, of course after doing your own research, then you should believe in it, i for one for example believe in the Bitcoin network, and notwithstanding whatever FUD or panic the media and some personalities try to spread, i basically do not care, i hodl my Bitcoin, and spend it when i get a chance to, that is because i have done my research about Bitcoin and i know it is a long term project.

Having said that, Ethereum looks like a good project in the Altcoin market, it has been around for a long while and has a pretty strong community, thus the coin might not really dump as rumors have it, but like i said before, it is only OP that can make that conclusion.

There would be people that would buy the rumor and sell the news. Imagine, it's either you are going to make money or not. It's going to be the factor every time that you are going to look for investments. Let's say that you will be making the right decision with this.

So I think it's best to look forward to what you want. Do you want ETH in the long term or profit in the short time?

I dont think that after the merge the price of Ethereum will change greatly. Even though a change from PoW to PoS is a serious action, it wont make a huge impact in the price. Such vision has formed after seeing that Ethereum price did not usually changed much when they announced and released past updates. Current question imo is more about how much ETH owner has ready lose or had already earned. Ethereum price after merge wont turn owner into millionaire or a beggar.

Those are all speculations and if you didn't get some of your capitals, better not to rush on something that's not 100% guaranteed. You either trust the process of waiting for the merge and sold your ETH or you can decide right now when everything is completely fine to sell your BTC because when the merge happens, you cannot sell your ETH nor withdraw it from Binance as well, I don't know about the other exchanges but if you have doubt, you better not to delay your decisions.

One desire does not interfere with another. If there is such an opportunity, then you need to get a profit in the short term, and then after receiving even more coins, expect a profit in the long term. But it is also difficult to do as to buy at the lowest price and sell high.

Likely, I keep on holding as I believe that this merge doesn't make a huge impact on its price nor do I think a decline come next. But not sure you OP of what you think about it. I simply put respond to what I think and also used my instinct.

SELL them if you never trust ETH, HOLD if you still have the guts to take the risk. I encourage you not to listen to those rumors apparently, there is no confirmation with regards to that.

I looked at the chart and I don't think this coin will go below $900 unless the black swan comes. I don't know where the bottom is, but I bought in July for $1,100.
Ethereum is an ecosystem coin and worth keeping in a portfolio, but there are no guarantees in the crypto market, so the best choice would be to diversify your investment into 5-7 different coins.

I'm of the opinion that ethereum would pump after the merge and would prefer to keep mine and await the outcome of the merge.

Lastly I sold some eth  to play it safe.
My thoughts are maybe there will be a last minute delay for 300,000 more blocks.

I am pulling for one more delay as I have quite a bit of gpus mining eth as I type. I kept grabbing gpus time and time again in fact I just set one more gpu up today.

Don't listen too much to what other people say, be yourself with strong principles, for me people who say ETH will fall after merging just want to have ETH at a cheap price. whatever decision we choose, we ourselves bear it.

What really do we expect from the merge that makes us even worried? 2. Asides the ethereum token wont the blockchain also be affected if the coin is affected by the merge?

Are you a trader or a long-term holder? if you hold long then dumping will happen, I think it won't affect you. 2 months ago we saw ethereum drop below $1000 and then go up to $2k but unfortunately we were in a bear market so it couldn't hold 2k then dropped to 1500. This is the price I think is quite good to collect more than to sell. Don't think about short term drop, that's normal. Think about what you will get if you hold it for a long time, its value will be many times greater than when you hold it.

It's stable on its rank and that's why it's good to keep it. I've dumped many of the ETHs that I've got during and before the ATH but that's because that I need to do it now, with the remaining that I have, I'll make sure that I still have a few to hold after the merge.

But for ETH I don't think it will be that simple, for me I dare to say that I believe in ETH and I invest long term in it, so I won't sell it (at least until it goes mainstream adoption). the rumors circulating are just FOMO made for a specific purpose.
it is impossible that after the merger of Ethereum it will just be thrown away because the merger of Ethereum is a good project, it will actually make more enthusiasts and investors who will enter Ethereum.
I personally prefer to increase the number of Ethereum assets that I hold before the merger is carried out and keep it until it actually reaches the highest targeted ATH because Ethereum is a coin with long-term prospects besides Bitcoin.

I think it is better to hold your ethereum rather than to sell it, my reasoning is quite simple, I think it's a bad idea to sell your coins because there is not a lot of room for ethereum to go down that much further, on the other hand there is a potential and room for ethereum to grow during the next weeks, it may not happen but I think the possibilities of that happening are higher than of the price crashing, there is another possibility and that is that the merge doesn't move price that much and in that case you do not really lose anything by holding your coins.

I do agree that 2k+ is given after the merge, maybe we have gone down a bit recently because of the mt.gox news but that’s how crypto is when something bad is heard in the news.

But, if something bad on the news caused it to go down then it means that something good in the news (like eth merge) will make sure that it goes up as well. That is what I am trusting with right now and it will surely happen, what I do not get however is the fact that we can't make it work in anyway or capacity currently, it would need to be done first and then spent a bit of time later. I always gathered as much ETH as I can, of course I do not have the 32 ETH goal that I have, but I am hoping to get there eventually.

The price of bitcoin will go up and down and this is normal, it becomes a good opportunity if we make bitcoin for daily trading, many people can profit up to thousands of dollars in a week or even less because of trading in binance or other exchanges. But if we focus long -term then buying and hold is also a good choice.

If you follow such a strategy as selling on the news, then it should have been done when the price of ETH was at $2000. Now the price is not so attractive for sale, and even more so, if you sell ETH, you will deprive yourself of the opportunity to get free ETHW.

Perhaps, the dumps can be possible this time even with the merging happens. It was just the FUDs circulating the market making people get worried that the ETH price will lose more of its value but we don't have any proof with the scenario, not a single thing. Besides, even to say it drops more but if we never touch it nor sell them, we have nothing to lose either.

i am also on the side that the price of eth will rise instead of decreasing its price. it may dump a lil but it can easily go back and increase again. the assurance with eth is that you are not investing in a crappy platform but you are holding one of the top projects. with this, in my opinion, it is better to hodl your eth. you will regret if you are seeing the price is rising up and you already sold yours.

I’m still holding my ETH since I bought it at a higher price and have no choice but to hold it, I can say that it’s better not to panic and just see what will happen after this merge. I.dont know why many of you guys believe the the ethereum merge is going to change thing in the network, you are not the only one who believes the ethereum market price will go up after the merge, but I put it to you the ethereum merge is not going to pump the price and is not going to reduce the transaction fees either too. The merge is all about the connectivity of the network to another layer 2 chains that will enable the movement of the ethereum network on the POS network of computing.

For now the predictions were not in the favour of ethereum to go steep rise once after the merge. For different reasons the merge is predicted to bring some down market and further make positive move. So, rather than thinking of selling it is good to hold the ethereum for long term. Even if the merge is effective, we can't experience the best growth instantly. It follows the market trend, so when bitcoin turns bullish we ethereum too will grow.

Personally, I am expecting that for some good weeks after the merge there can be a good inflow of momentum for Ethereum so there is a big possibility of its value to go up. Keep it. I'm sure The Merge will have plenty of late-to-the-party investors. They FOMO will push the price of ETH to be very high. Binance and other CEXs already plan to stop the deposit/withdraw ETH which I think is another thing to contribute to the high price of ETH around The Merge. Since the ETH supply to exchange will be cut from the wallet, this is the spelling for a pump. How much? I can't tell. The risk of it being dumped post Merge is also there.

I don't really know if the merge will dump or pump Ethereum, so I think it will be better you sell half of your Ethereum and hold half, incase if the coin dump then you can buy back with the money you sold the half and I case if the coin pump then you won't be missing the pump completely you are having half of your money in the coin atleast you will also benefit. I am pretty sure that the act of going from pow to pos could maybe have a bit of a turmoil that is true but we are not sure about it, I remember very clearly about 1.5 years ago or so, when there was a certain amount of ETH required to go to phase 0, we had a situation where people bought ethereum by bulk and put it in somewhere and increased the price.

I am not entirely sure but it could be December 2020 if I am not wrong. That means, if the same happens then the price could go up as well. On top of that, we are also talking about the future, so maybe it will go down or up during this short period, but it will definitely go up in the long run as well, there is no doubt about that.

Depends on you. If you are into longer terms then you better keep your eth because I think it's expected to grow more in the future now that it's on its new version but if you are in for shorter terms only then you better sold your eth now if you bought lower because I think eth is already rising.

I agree on those rumors that eth will dump right after the merge because many people are also going to sell for profits but that dip won't last long because there will always be buyers right after it. For me I think I won't sell till the merge and forking is done so that I can get some free fork coins which I can sell together with my eth for a better profit.

This merger is a step towards solving some of Ethereum's biggest problems. The Ethereum network has been plagued by congestion and high fees for years. The new update is designed to fix the problem. I think, this not effects to price of ETH.

Don't believe all the rumors, why will Ethereum be dumped? I don't think so, Ethereum is a very strong coin and it occupies the second rank in the market and the new coin produced after the merger cannot take the position of the original Ethereum, because of these rumors many people sold FOMO and this made the price of Ethereum drop a bit, but I expect a huge increase at the long term.

I feel like the decision to increase the price or not will be based on what happens with the transaction fee in the long run. If the congestion is over and the price is lower than the price will go up, because that has been the thing people have been waiting for.

So I agree that let just wait for that run and see if what would be the impact, the merger was done and to those who sell it before it takes place they can buyback now and enjoy the discounted price. I think after eth marge eth price can reach too much. but sometime it make me confused. it can make a negative  effect.  so i think it will not a good decision to hold full amount of ethereum. we should sell 50-60% and hold the rest amount. then it will not worried us if eth price fail after marge. but if eth price reach after marge then we can also get profit for our rest amount  holding

It's about being ready, maybe it's not that high anymore, but now we know hopefully it won't be high ever. There is no guarantee of course, if there is a congestion again and there is a more than expected attention towards it and the demand goes through the roof, then maybe we will have expensive gas fee again, but at least we know for bare minimum that we are doing better than we did, and that's a good thing. That's why it should be higher in price right now as well because it allows people to use it cheaper.

But, do you know why it won't be? Because people spend a lot on ETH gas fee, and that meant buying more ETH to spend on gas fee, and now they won't have to.

And the unexpected has came, majority had thought that it will be a pump for Ethereum after the merge.
But look at what it is right now, there's no pump and it's even likely going to fall more due to the market's situation and that's why don't expect at most times for positive things in the market because you don't know what's in it to come.

What happens to the price after the halving is very similar to what happened with Bitcoin after the last two halving, where the price suddenly fell in a corrective movement that precedes the halving by a short period and continues after it for a short period as well, so that the price returns to the rise with the end of the update as an event. It’s because the market is still in bear season especially the BTC, that even there are new updates in altcoins it still not vives impact in the market unless BTC is also in hype. Not sure if he had sold actually. He is trading in the wrong pair as in his recent post (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5411724.msg60947152#msg60947152), he is trading in ETH/BTC. Quite rare.

But the price surged before the merge though. There are always 2 ways how to react to what goes on with the price right now, either sell because you think the price is going to sink deeper or buy more because it's time to invest.

There are many opinions with regard to how they will react with the merged that take place.

But long-term wise ETH is always a good project to store and if you have spare money instead of selling, it is okay to buy
and add more into your hold assets. The temporary market movements are just another regular thing that happens around the
