Title: What the hell is going on with these spammers?
Post by: P2PECS on September 06, 2022, 07:11:54 AM
Lately I keep seeing new forum members creating a thread in Bitcoin Discussion section talking about an altcoin.

Examples:

Amulet Protocol (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5412552.0)

Terra (LUNA) Coin Price Prediction 2022 - 2030. Will LUNA's price hit $3 in 2022 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5412548.0)

UNIP Coin NEW GOOD NEWS 🔥 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5412540.0)

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Interestingly, a spammer has now appeared on this very board:

Пpo пpoeкт AmuNation ¦ Як вiн пpaцює (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5412555.0)

You can just report them, ignore them or simply avoid Altcoin Discussion at all since only few of the threads that is created there are sensical and most are pure garbage either by promoting their scam token or a hive full of spammers.

And as far as I know, there are services out there that incentivizes people to shill their project in every forum they find on the internet. So they don't care whether they create spam or not as long as the service is advertised.

Just the typical pump attempt thread for a low-liquidity token(probably besides the LUNA one, which was just an attempt to get link clicks), nothing really special.

Seeing an altcoin being promoted in Bitcoin Discussion is what I don't see but what I always see is an altcoin that is being promoted in the Altcoin Discussion. Nothing new TBH because I've seen many threads regarding promotion of a certain project or coin.

Does anyone know why this is happening?
Promotion, advertisement and an attempt to scam those newbie investors who are here.
Just avoid new projects, memecoins, shitcoins and those low market cap coins and just focus on the top market cap coins. In that way, you will be scammed way lesser than investing into the ones that I said.

Many marketers pretend to be professionals for the money, and as you can see they don't even know where to attract attention or which to hate. Just report all, they will give up in the end.

That Amulet is spamming mindlessly everything, from bitcoin discussion to meta and local boards.
I keep reporting them but I wish a mod would add some keywords into a script and just remove automatically those posts, especially if they're not in altcoin discussion/announements areas.

We do have something like that, run by Mitchell I believe. Although, it does have some limitations, and things only really get added to it once we've become aware of them, and let Mitchell know.

Yes, if it's a spammer using common phrases, let me know and I can deal with it.

I knew about your scripts. But this time it's not only about phrases, it's also (or more) about where these posts are also located.
Do those scripts also handle this? Because if so I will start looking for phrases when this kind of topics pop up.

The bot doesn't care where it's posted, as long as it's posted by a Newbie account.

These people don’t have a high level of intellect, do they. Most people on bitcointalk.org are pretty smart, these guys are just wasting their time. Nobody is going to fall for these shitcoin offerings.

Well, to the best of my perspicacity, if they aren't bots making those posts; then it would either be newbies who didn't know the exact sections to posts in or they just wanted boards that could get them attention. It's not something heinous, anyway. Just simply ask OP to move it or report to moderator to move it when you find such inappropriateness. Also, you can ignore it.

Sent you a PM. I hope it's not too bad :)

One culprit may be ref links and the expectation some may be earning a few pennies off it.

It is irrelevant whether it is about people who just open the first board on the forum and post anything unrelated to that board, or about professionals who just want as much visibility as possible for the projects they are promoting. They simply need to be reported like any other topic that has nothing to do with the Bitcoin discussion, and there are quite a few of them.

I personally am not surprised that some beginners and scammers take advantage of the fact that the Bitcoin discussion is the first board on the forum and it certainly has a very good exposure, but that even much more experienced members use that board for various topics that do not belong there.

If you find a topic created on the wrong board, then ask the OP to move it to the correct board if you think the content presented deserves a good discussion. You can also report to the mod to be moved to the correct board, but your first attempt should work if the OP is really serious about discussing it.

That's pretty much the entire reason, and OP is relatively new to the forum so he might not be aware that this crap happens all the time--and that Bitcoin Discussion is a haven for shitposters of all stripes.  This is a bitcoin forum (and the biggest one by far), so you'd think that section would be of the highest quality, but it's the exact opposite.

And that's no dig on the moderators of Bitcoin Discussion, because trying to keep that section clean would be a full-time job for a team of people, which bitcointalk doesn't have.

So yeah, please just report threads like those.  It helps the community when you do so, and it's an unacknowledged deed but a good thing for everyone.

I would not agree that there are no resources in the sense that there are not enough moderators, but that there are not enough of those who report posts/topics that break the rules in that board. I am personally active there every day and I do my part, but I think that board should be additionally protected in a way to prevent Newbies and all those who have not earned at least 5 merits from posting there.

It is not something that would solve the problem with poor quality posts or ordinary spam, but it would be a good start if we want the Bitcoin discussion not to be overrun like some other boards.

Yeah, can you add "UNiP Coin NEW GOOD NEWS 🔥" to the list of instantly-deleted topic titles?

Just reported another incarnation today and yesterday.

Yes, I have seen one on Bitcoin Discussión when I had a look before without being logged in, but I see it has been deleted. It looks like they will keep popping up if they are not deleted instantly.

I have one of them in my report history (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=reportlist;mine) too.

I've added "spam:unipayofficial.com" to [Active] Finding spam and scams by keyword (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5268608.0) (and I'd like to use this opportunity to remind spam hunters that my "finding spam service" exists).

"The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you"
, however, this is nothing new as people sometimes post everything in bitcoin discussion as this is the first board and main board which appears when we open bitcointalk. The mods usually will move the thread to the relevant section but if all of these threads were created by the same person then that should be dealt with differently. I think that's the reason mods deleted all of them.
