Since the beginning of the pandemic, pet surrendering rates have increased dramatically around the world. Waitlists for surrendering household pets have increased to a remarkable eight months as animal shelters and welfare organisations have seen an increase of 34% for animals needing help.

Typically, animal shelters are under resourced and under financed; relying heavily on donations and the volunteer efforts to assist animals.

This is where Meow Coin steps in. As avid lovers of cats, we wanted to make a difference. Using the power of Proof of Work mining, we’ve created a coin where miners are contributing to the donation of money to animal welfare shelters. These shelters initially include the ASPCA who already have a cryptocurrency donation mechanism but with intention to expand to the RSPCA and other organizations suggested by the community.  

Our aim is to put animals first and we intend on developing ongoing relationships with pet shelters to help adoption.

I would navigate to the hidden folder users/appdata if on windows delete all the folders. But back up your wallet.dat (if you have coins in there)

Then redownload and sync the chain. If that doesn’t work you can try Beehive wallet.

The problem with that is nearly the same with using blockchain tech for anything having to do with medicine or medical records.  If it's a public blockchain, how are you supposed to enforce patient/client confidentiality?  And think about it.  The ICO bubble came and went, and out of all the projects that claimed to be doing different things, nothing useful ever stuck in the world of either human or veterinary medicine, and for good reason.

The donation part of this does look appealing to me, but it isn't clear from what's on your website who the MEWC is going to be donated to.  There's also the obvious issue of the amounts being so small simply because of the price of the coin that there's not going to be enough to make any sort of difference.

If you check under donations section you will find all the relevant information on our donations. So far we’ve donated $3200 worth of crypto to animal shelters. Since they don’t take MEWC we do otc deals with people to acquire BTC/LTC to send the animal shelters.

While $3200 in a month may not seem like much to you, if we can do this every month we will ABSOLUTELY make an impact.

I think the points you raise are fair. Just to give some feedback, what we're trying to do is two fold.

1. Allowing user-defined information to be made public e.g. phone so if a dog or cat were to run away, then a member of the public could find a contact number via a scanned tag
2. Providing privacy of remainder of information through our ledger database domain

Whilst I agree that privacy is important and certain information is usually something that wants to be kept so, other items relating to this topic are things people would want public. For instance, a standard pet collar has a phone number on it to help people locate an owner in case the pet escapes. People willingly do this. We're simply providing a place to do this and combining various other elements together.

Things such as medical records can be attached - privately of course - to the blockchain for an animal, meaning veterinary care becomes agnostic and adoption shelters can provide transparency on a pets medical history. Owners can then scale back how much information they want publicly available vs privately available.

I do think the reason things haven't stuck is people haven't worked at it long enough. I've currently got a conversation going with an Australian pet adoption organisation who are keen to look at a trial on this. We're working through details but its progressing positively.


Animal shelters and animal welfare organisation is who we're aiming at. We can make this clearer also. But we also get the community to vote for options we place before them.

In terms of the donations, yes, price is an issue, but we feel every $ counts.

OK, I guess I missed that somehow so my mistake.  

I wouldn't say that's a small amount at all, because one of the reasons I'm posting in this thread is because I work in the animal care field and know how underfunded a lot of nonprofit shelters and so forth are.  The cost of pet food just keeps on going up, and all of those kitties and other animals have to eat, and that's just part of the cost of taking care of them.

Sincerely I wish you good fortune with this project.  In support I've thrown some hashing power at MEWC mining.

By the way, I'm having a very hard time getting the core wallet to sync.  The first time it got stuck on a particular block, and now after reinstalling it I can't get any connection to the network.  Any suggestions?

Somehow I finally got the wallet to fully sync before I saw your reply, but thank you for being prompt with the assistance.  I've opened and closed the wallet a few times since then and there've been no more hiccups.

I really do hope MEWC lasts, because for whatever reason I have grown fond of it.  Perhaps it's my fancy for the feline species, perhaps because the DAG size doesn't make my 1050Ti crap out like Ravencoin does.  Regardless, most new altcoins show promise and enthusiasm in the beginning and then begin the long, slow decline to obscurity.  May MeowCoin not suffer that fate.

On the subject you're citing - this is one of the reasons we started the project. Post COVID, animal surrendering has escalated beyond shelters ability to accomodate. So many more pets are being let go or just neglected. I myself found my cat dying at 4 weeks old under a table near my local church. The vet said it is a very common story and offered to euthanise. I asked why euthanise, and they told me supply of pets - even kittens - is so great that the poor thing would stand no chance against other healthier options.

I opted to take the cat, had it desexed etc and it is now living its best life.

The need to help our furry friends is real. This is the best way Mancer and I could support it and provide other miners with that option too.
