If it weren't for me sharing myself on this forum like I do, I would not of have met the love of my life. A lot of it is due to our lovely friends on the SomethingAwful forum. She is a member of that forum and she used to casually browse it. She stumbled upon the Bitcoin thread and eventually me through the goon's commentary. It started with emails over a month's time and eventually daily phonecalls. Now she has become one of the closest people in my life.

The funniest thing is she is a self-proclaimed Marxist while I'm an absolute individualist, yet we both recognize the same problems in our society. We just wish to evoke change through different means. It's as if differences don't really exist...

Anyways, I regret nothing and this place has been permanently burned into my heart. Ironically, this applies to SomethingAwful as well although I've been banned from there two times for "libertarianism".

Just consider this a big thank you.

I could be way off base here, but something tells me that the entirety of all somethingawful forum users is not inherently against bitcoin, but moreso against idiots claiming bitcoin is the savior of humanity-- and that they can start a movie theater on will power alone. Some goons use bitcoin.

Some goons (at least 6) were trying to convince everyone that I was some kind of a lying scammer. I learned that it was by my horrid presentation that made them think this way, accepted it as constructive criticism and moved on. Anyone doing anything other than that is obviously butthurt and don't know how to argue their points and/or walk away.

After seeing them beat on Atlas for weeks with absolutely no moral reasoning, I realized that forum is compromised primarily by Internet scumm. Don't give them more credit than they deserve, because they try to bring out your own "flaws" while at the same time hypocritically fueling their own. It's truly disgusting...

P.S I don't agree with the kid on just about anything, but I am vehemently oppose to cyber bullying. It's usually a bunch of kids who would get knocked out IRL anyways...

Yeah show any psychologist what SA was doing, and they would categorize it as pure cyber bullying. Whether he made an account there or not is irrelevant... They know he reads their pathetic postings, and unfortunately young Atlas reacts to their bullshit. It's just like when someone talks about you on Facebook, except they are posting this stuff on someone else's wall. Show a psychologist what Atlas was doing and they would categorize it as narcissism, ADHD and a detachment disorder coupled with aspergers. Anyone who calls making fun of big mouthed idiots who post their personal information online and go out of their way to dare others to call their house, prove them wrong on every issue, claim that law and order is a sham, lie about themselves, their achievements, their identity, constantly change their online identities whenever they are proven wrong on some issue or reminded of their past mistakes, and a slew of other ridiculous taunts and ambiguous egoism "cyberbullying" might in fact benefit from a visit to a psychologist themselves.

If that's true, he'll never understand his mistakes until he doesn't have to defend them constantly.  Bullying is exactly what I would call that, and it prevents him from growing past it.

Can't argue with that. Unfortunately, the internet is a cruel beast and you can't lock up the internet for cyberbullying. What you can do however is make sure that when you comment on someone, your comment holds some logical ground. As far as I can tell, they have given him reason after reason, but he eggs on like a brainless moron, as if when he dies he will be rewarded in heaven for each time he said "so are you" or "am not".

The only people who deserve to be villianized are his bat-shit insane parents for letting someone of his mental condition use an internet connected computer in the first place.


EDIT: For those who care, Atlas is banned right now because he was talking shit about theymos on reddit-- where he was also banned for such-- and then tried to bribe theymos with 50 BTC.

Why would I be scared? I'm not a goon and their Bitcoin thread is the first time in about 8 years I've bothered to look at the site. I just thought the "One day, you'll be sorry. You'll all be sorry!" thing was a bit much.

... and if you search my post history here, I'm pretty sure there's a post by my calling them out on the personal attacks. Fact is that the goon community is huge, and with that community there are bound to be some shitheads that the mods can't control.

I once got an internet girlfriend, and we sort of dated for about two weeks, until I found out it was a guy (my age, kind of cute, apparently very girly with trans tendencies). Thats about when I figured out that I'm not very particular when it comes to my date's sex. Was so in love I just didn't care. It only lasted a bit over two years though. We're still friends, too. So not all "she turned out to be a dude" stories end horribly.

The problem with getting rich, buying their forum, and banning them is with the buying part. Buying means the other party was willing to sell, and the price was right. If you buy out their forum, it means either their leader, or all the important members got enough money that they themselves are willing to let the forum go. In short, buying them out = making them comfortably wealthy. I won't do that, just as I won't ever buy a membership there, because I don't want to give them even a penny of my money.
If Bitcoin does take off and make you rich, it would be way cheaper and satisfying to hire professionals on the black market to hack and screw with the forum to make it unusable, or trace member's real life ID's and make their real lives horrible. That's what I would do, anyway.

Now I'm really curious about the transcript that lead to Atlas being banned, if anyone has it. Trolls and scams pollute this forum, but insult a mod personally and THAT gets you banned? That would be pretty corrupt if it's true.

He thinks he has the perfect answers to all of life's problems, yet he doesn't understand that we as adults have already processed most of his flawed (yet hopeful) ideology. Regardless he doesn't deserve to be banned from this forum. He is a contributor, and contributors don't get banned from communities who use them on a daily basis... As far as him having "Asperger Syndrome" I call complete bullshit... Atlas may be off-base but he's definitely not "off topic"... It looks like the SA trolls are trying to hijack this entire situation, and trying to paint Atlas as the villain, when he's clearly not. Theymos may be pushing his power a bit to far in this situation...

Do you seriously believe that Atlas hasn't got a history of derailing threads with his off-topic posts (not to mention starting topics which don't belong in the Discussion forum there so that they'll get more exposure)?  It's one thing to argue that shitting up threads with off-topic posts shouldn't be a ban-able offence, but another entirely to claim that Atlas hasn't repeatedly done it.

Would you be happier if theymos introduced a rule banning alt. accounts so that Atlas was restricted to a single username which people could put on their ignore list?  Is there some reason why Atlas should be exempt from the rules which other posters are expected to follow?  Is your issue with the fact that someone got permabanned for trying to circumvent a temporary ban or is it because it was Atlas in particular who got banned?

This all seems reasonable and fair to me. It is possible that he will be unbanned in the future (months from now, at least) if he regains his sanity.

Really, I’m not sure if he has ever had any to begin with.

The day he was banned he admitted in a thread that he was off his meds, then proceeded to derail virtually every thread in general discussion (maybe other forums too I wasn't checking them).  The posts have since been deleted and cleaned up so it may seem like it wasn't warranted, but it was.  Luckily he was mostly being ignored, but it only takes one person taking the bait to ruin a thread.  


What SA trolls?  They don't care about this place anymore, they even closed their bitcoin thread because they got bored.  It looks like you are trying to spin this situation into something it isn't.  Atlas wasn't banned because of something someone else said or did, he was banned because he spent an entire day posting off topic and irrelevant replies and disrupting real discussion in every thread he showed up in.  Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen.  In this case it's Atlas being the troll. 

I see a lot of myself (when much, much younger) in Atlas in certain ways.

What he needs to understand is that he doesn't know shit. I mean he really needs to understand it, not spew forth a bunch of wannabe-zen bullshit logic like "I unremorsefully admit that I know very little and am learning every day" while continuing to be a pretentious fuckwit everywhere he goes. I mean he really needs to get it.

He needs to quit talking "bootstraps", when you can tell just by his YouTube videos that given his upbringing he has a very skewed definition of what "bootstraps" actually means. He needs to understand that by virtue of his situation, no matter what menial achievement he reaches it will never be a case of "well if I can do it, everyone can."

Atlas, I heartily recommend travel, since your parents seem affluent enough to let you put yourself in a position to make it happen once high school is done. You once mentioned that because of the "free market" you could get a broken leg set and cast in Asia for $200USD. I would definitely insist that you go there, or maybe somewhere like Ukraine, and see how "Doctors" live when they work for those prices, and perhaps check out the quality of the work and the sterile environments too.

But mostly travel because it's fatal to ignorance, which you are absolutely pouring with right now. Going to school in Chicago won't do it, you can likely find a mob of objectivist upper-middle-class douchebags where you can fit right in with, you need to get completely out of your comfort zone and experience some shit.

Finally, and this was the hard-learned lesson for me, you really may consider talking less and listening more. I've found that you occasionally learn (or at least develop a better understanding) by explaining a useful concept to someone who doesn't get it (I had a massive "oh shit" moment regarding pointers in C many many years ago, while trying to articulate my ill-founded understanding to someone who was utterly clueless), but for the most part you don't learn anything by talking.
