Title: How do you store your physical crypto collectibles?
Post by: Abiky on November 23, 2022, 01:48:52 AM
If you own lots of physical crypto collectibles, how would you store them securely? I usually put my graded coin slabs (crypto-related, of course) inside small shockproof boxes for safekeeping (each box costs around $2 on AliExpress). Then I put all of those small boxes inside a large Pelican box with a padlock for greater protection. The Pelican box is expensive, but totally worth it in my opinion. I think this method allows me to protect my collectibles against water, dust, shocks, and even fire (although I'm yet to verify if that is the case). In physical crypto coins alone, I have over 120 units. And that's without counting other types of collectibles such as the Papersafe Stock Certificates, the Polymerbit Notes, and even the original Bitcoin Magazines.

Here is a picture of the small boxes I use to store graded crypto coins (click to enlarge):

What are your methods? Feel free to share them here. Thanks. :)

Wow.. those are some pretty cool little storage boxes. :D
Great idea for a thread... might help some of the newer collectors know about their possible storage options.

Very cool, $2 only!

I heard that keeping coins inside a waterproof safe may cause humidity to build up on the coins. Therefore, they advise whenever you use a waterproof box to ensure that it has a pressure relief valve.

I add small silica gel packs to remove moisture from the air in the box

If your main concern is security, I'd go a step further and build various hidden storages throughout the house to hide them in different locations [and it means more pelican boxes].
- I'm not sure where you're keeping the large Pelican box, but if an intruder can see it somehow, then it'd become an easy target!

I have a few similar or could be the same - had to resort to using these as well as I simply do not have enough room to display everything I have.

I hope to eventually have a much bigger office where I can fully display everything eventually.

as for physical security - only people I trust are allowed in my office and I pity anyone who comes with the intent of breaking in.

It's cool to display the items.
According to articles I've read about coin display, several parameters must be considered into account:

1. Security: locked lockers, armored glass, Using jumbo screws to hang frames/shelves or cabinets. In favor of docking., etc.

2. Lighting - direct light may damage the quality of the coin/banknote. Natural lighting causes increased humidity which can cause a process of "excessive sweating" in the capsule that keeps the item—especially items with holograms.

So, in conclusion, there are items that are indeed nice to see daily or to show off to close friends. Still, the delicate items that require increased security or certain conditions are worth putting in a shady, locked place. And it is definitely worth using moisture-absorbing devices in these places for optimal and long-term preservation of your unique items.

I hope this helped someone :)

i store most of my collection in a bank safe deposit box which is already completely full. that's why i'm thinking of buying my own safe to store all my valuable collectibles in.
there would also be an advantage - i could then look at them as i like.

Yes for printed material like books, magazines, notes and prints direct UV light and
possibly indirect light will fade and discolour the material.

I store all my printed items in acid free Black paper and card which in turn gets put
into an airtight grip sealed bag and stored ot out direct sunlight.

What I did in order to display light sensitive mags like the economist...is take a color photo copy and store the mag away and display the copy. Same went with my bitbills so if anyone ever robs my stuff all they will get is a copy and not the original  ;)

Haven’t read any replies, so some of this might be redundant but …

For me it all depends on many factors. Depends on metal type, value, shape/size etc. For precious metals the biggest lesson I’ve learned is never ever buy cheap capsules. I had only ever bought from this company https://air-tites.com/. They are first class quality and service.  I met a fellow collector online who collects a certain type of coin where we are the two biggest collectors of (rare but not popular at all) so we’ve been helping each other collect for years now. Anyways I taught him how to care for and store fine silver coins and exactly where to buy storage items from. Long story short he scored me some insanely rare and absolutely perfect conditioned coins from the 90s and even kindly bought capsules and loaded them all in. When I got them the capsules felt a tiny bit different, with a very slight lip on the edge. He assured me they were from air-tites.com.   Well 2-3 months later upon looking at them, almost every single one had toned. Even despite being in a climate controlled environment (which is also very important). Same happened to his. I asked he send me the site he got the capsules from and sure enough, I’d never heard of the site/company. Capsules aren’t all created equal by a long shot. Most are junk I’ve found. Also, buy capsules tubes to double up (thanks to those on here who recommend this).

Slabbing your best stuff is a good idea. I hold my slabs in special climate tech boxes made specifically for them. I’m skeptical any of them have very legit protection, but it’s nicely organized and makes me feel good lol.

Also, don’t store all your stuff in one place at home. I keep very little to nothing of value at home, and the rest I apply the Ron Swanson storage method (or have I ).. https://youtu.be/l_3_9zK4y-Q

The best easy access storage “holder” I’ve found for coins you want to easily access and in an organized fashion are these hobby boxes/storage container deals. Think they are normally used for like craft hobbies or small tools/nails/screws but work great for coins and hold quite a few.  Also thought I’d share the single coolest coin display I’ve ever come across. Apmex made these as a limited give away for those who bought cases of American eagles, years back. Finally snagged one off eBay. I’ve asked Apmex if they can make more/told them they are dumb if they don’t as I know a lot of people who want them, but they didn’t give a shit. So if anyone knows how to have something exactly like these individual paper weight/magnified metal/glass display pieces made, let me know !

Thanks. I've came up with the idea after looking for a safe way to help protect my graded coins against water, dust, shocks, and fire (without breaking the bank, of course). I don't think the $2 boxes from AliExpress are fireproof, but at least they have good water and dust resistance. Maybe fire won't be much of an issue if they're going to be kept inside my large Pelican box. I'm might have to buy another large Pelican box as the one I have is starting to get full with the small orange boxes inside. :)

https://www.coinsupplyexpress.com/guardhouse-black-aluminum-box-for-100-slabs-783560

I like these. ;D

That looks sick. I'd use one of these for storing graded coins that are non-crypto related. I have a couple of graded US coins from ANACS and NGC, so I'd use this case even if it's not as shockproof as my little boxes (I tend to value crypto collectibles more than traditional coinage). Now I'm planning to buy something similar for my slabbed Cardsmiths cards. If only these cases had a better type of lock (like a combination lock used on traditional briefcases), it would be a blast. :)

If your main concern is security, I'd go a step further and build various hidden storages throughout the house to hide them in different locations [and it means more pelican boxes].
- I'm not sure where you're keeping the large Pelican box, but if an intruder can see it somehow, then it'd become an easy target!

Yes, I'm aware about that. I've made sure the box is out of sight by putting it in a secret compartment inside my basement. I don't think a burglar would ever find it there, less think the box has something valuable on it. But I'd pay for some sort of insurance just to be safe. ;)

Made this thread a few years back

  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5270256.0

Pretty cool. There's lots of useful info related to storing crypto collectibles securely. I'd have to say the acrylic cases for Polymerbit notes have brought my attention. Thanks for sharing this, bud. I really appreciate it. If only there were some sort of acrylic cases to store my Bitcoin Suisse Notes (2014 and 2019), I'd be complete. :D

I can appreciate people’s hiding spots and that will most likely be good enough protection to allow you to live a normal life without fear of break ins or house guests stealing your collectibles. I’m not sure it’s good enough protection from a wrench attack though. There’s something to be said about not having access to your collection, although it sucks to not be able to view the items that are held so dear without jumping through all sorts of hoops.

A nice display would work well if you don't move around much. :)

This has been posted before and answered before and some old member posted they store their collection at a business which has 24/7 security and its in a safe better than a bank
