Title: Why didn't an exchange do this already?
Post by: S4VV4S on March 28, 2014, 10:53:26 AM
OK, I am still puzzled as to why an exchange doesn't use Tor.

It provides more security than having your server known and vulnerable to attacks.

So why didn't they do it already?

Most exchanges use DDOS protection that hides their ip so why would they use TOR? Also, TOR is slow as hell. Cant do trading on an exchange that is lagged all the time.

I think it's obvious isn't it, make your exchange hidden and you won't get traffic.
Just like opening McD in the sewer who would want to do that  :D
Besides...
What makes you think a TOR server is less vulnerable.
All hackers got to do is implement TOR in their trojans.

OK, maybe Tor is slow for an exchange.

How about an online wallet then?

How long did it take the U.S. and U.K secret services to crack down Silk Road?

That is because DPR posted in this forum about Silk Road in his real name... There was no other clue

... I'm getting this feeling you don't have a clue about security.

I'm worried my things are going to get stolen, so I'll put my safe in a public library.. because clearly that'll help.

Think of it this way.

If MtGox was a Tor based exchange, would there be any problems with it?
No, because Mark knows that Tor cannot be hacked.

So.....

Bro, people will keep using online wallets.

What you and I do is a different matter.
The fact is that Bitcoin NEEDS a reliable online wallet and exchange.

No, because Mark knows that Tor cannot be hacked.

So.....

You have absolutely no idea what caused the mtgox issues.

The method of reaching the servers has nothing to do with it.
Tor doesn't provide any additional security, all it does is provide anonymity.

The security of a website, their systems and their back-end is entirely unrelated to whether Tor is used or not.
If you do not understand this you're not even remotely qualified to make any comment on this subject.

All Tor would accomplish is make it even easier for the owner to run off with the coins.

What caused the issues was Mark and Mark alone.
He is a thief and a greedy pig.

How would a respectable exchange (who is already operating) run off with your coins?
What are they going to claim?
Malleability attack? LOL

Yes, the security of a website and their back-end is what matters but additional security is WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY.

Also, if you do not know how Tor can protect you then clearly you have no clue on the subject.

"The method of reaching the servers has nothing to do with it."
OK, so I guess you can hack any server without knowing it's location/ip right?
You must be very bright!!!!

Seriously,
Please stick to your Doge coins and stop wasting bandwidth.

So it's all good.

You don't understand what Tor does and doesn't do.

It's not a magical shield that prevents your systems from being exploited.
It's not a security service, it's an anonymity service.

If your system sucks, it doesn't matter how many "anonymous" nodes your traffic goes through, you're still going to exploit the system and get your hands on delicious bitcoins.
All Tor would do is provide a painfully slow service and extra anonymity for the owner to run off with the coins.

It's a terrible gamble to put coins in an online wallet and it takes a special kind of stupid to drop your coins on a service hosted through Tor.

So I will not continue this conversation with you.

Let me just say this:
WHAT IF Bitstamp let's say that already has good security measures decides to increase it by using Tor?
Or the blockchain.info wallet service was to be done through Tor?

INCREASING SECURITY!!!

THAT IS ALL I AM TRYING TO SAY!!!!

Can you stop being such a dick please?
Thank you  :)

Right. You don't need a location or IP to hack a server, you need a network connection. You need to be able to send and receive datagrams to and from the server. It doesn't matter how you connect to the server, if you can connect to it, you can hack it through that connection. Hopefully it goes without saying that you don't need a location or IP to connect to a Tor hidden service.

Tor hidden services only provide anonymity and end-to-end encryption. Nothing more.

There is no security provided by doing things through Tor, it is anonymity not security. These are often mistaken for the same thing but are actually very different.

Also, a large amount of exit nodes are compromised so the amount of anonymity you are actually getting is questionable if you are just blindly using it.

There are no exit nodes involved when connecting to a hidden service.

That would make your arguement more acceptable  ;)

That being said and since you know so much on the subject then maybe you can clear this out for me:
How comes the U.S. and U.K. secret services COULDN'T hack the Silk Road website?

They depended on DPR's mistakes.

So once again, to my original question: Does it not provide more security?
Even by a little bit?

You're still not getting it. Security is entirely unrelated to Tor.
Silk Road's security is in no way any different from any site hosted on the regular web.
The only difference is the anonymity. Which indeed came into play when they were trying to catch DPR.

But hey, let's do a car analogy.

You might as well ask why a bullet didn't go through bullet proof glass on a Mercedes, and then ask why we don't use a Mercedes instead of a BMW.

Both Mercedes and Beemers are Shite IMO.
