Title: Exodus wallet, Latest PC version 23.1.2. Bug or issue with my device?
Post by: Bitcoin_Arena on January 13, 2023, 10:43:15 PM
I was trying to send out some coins from my updated exodus wallet PC version 23.1.12 using the QR code option of scanning from my PC's camera but for some reason it just stays blank as shown in the image

https://i.imgur.com/a1gc8C3.png

Could this be a bug or an issue with my device?

Anyone with exodus wallet PC version, please help me confirm if the Qr code option of scanning from camera works or not.

Note: I decided to send funds using the copy-paste option, which I am so paranoid of lately due to the rampant Address poisoning scam (https://metamask.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/11967455819035-Address-poisoning-scams), mostly.

According to the official site, the newest version is 23.1.2, so it can't be 23.1.12 as you claimed.
When was the last time you tried the QR feature and did it work properly? Downgrade to the version prior to the newest one (22.12.19) and see if the QR feature works as it should. It it does, there are clearly some issues with the newest version. Alternatively, speak with their support. It seems like they are offering live chat on their website.

There is no reason to be worried about the address poisoning scam. It doesn't affect you one bit if you send and receive coins the normal way. The normal way isn't coping addresses from transaction histories or blockchain explorers. I don't use Exodus, but it surely has a send/receive window or tab where the wallet will display your receiving addresses. That's the place where you should copy them from. If you are sending coins to someone else, take the address they sent you in whatever method you use to communicate.

Just finished updating to the latest version, but didn't face any issues while using my webcam, so it must be from your side:
Note: I scanned a QR Code, but I chose not to include it in the following examples!

  • Screenshot on version 23.1.2 (https://i.imgur.com/ooMkGmr.jpg)
  • Screenshot on version 22.11.21 (https://i.imgur.com/xR7rJ7l.jpg)

Have you tried updating your webcam driver? There could also be some conflicts between other programs that use that same webcam.

Sorry, it was just a typing error. I was trying to type 23.1.2

Thanks for the feedback, mate. It might be the problem with either my drivers or my OS (Windows 11 home, Version 22H2). I am going to try it on my Linux just to and be sure it's not a hardware problem and will keep you posted

I stopped using my Linux a few months back as it would just freeze out of nowhere until I had to restart. I read somewhere that it could be due to my GPU, and it's sort of a newish bug, so I abandoned Linux for a while, but it's my preferred operating system.

For windows 11 home, maybe you can update the latest drivers, because there are several cases of the webcame not working when the drivers haven't been updated.
Or follow this link to see the same problem and its solution.

Or if you have the latest driver update, you can follow some guidelines from Exodus to solve this problem.

Windows can be very buggy sometimes with external cameras on desktop computers, but I would suggest switching from closed source Exodus to some different wallet.
There are no many good open source desktop wallets, but you can use combination with hardware wallets like Trezor, or try mobile wallet called Unstoppable.money (for multi coins).
Trezor Suite works very good with QR codes and you won't have t worry about most attacks.

Did you just recently install Windows 11 and Exodus wallet?

If you just recently installed then try to check settings>Bluetooth & devices> camera if it is disabled. Enable it and do update the Camera driver since it's a latest version of windows you can use the "Search automatically for updated driver software".

If its an external camera with USB try to replug it on different USB ports then try it again.
Also, take note of the antivirus sometimes your privacy settings don't allow camera access for some apps you can try to change it under your privacy settings.

This is a little off-topic, but I would not use Exodus wallet if I were you, because people on reddit have reported mysteriously losing their funds when using it[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Note: This is not FUD. I was actually shocked when I first saw all these incidents while browsing Reddit. Exodus is also written using Electron, a huge JavaScript environment to put it shortly, so the whole platform itself is pretty vulnerable to begin with.

I don't look at the rest that much but this case seems like a classic victim of phishing. Whether he uses Exodus or not doesn't really matter if he inputs his seed (or passkey, as he mentioned it) to some random website, after some random guy that said he is an Exodus employee told him to do so. That being said, I do agree that it is better to use other apps if there are too many cases where users' funds are stolen without any clear reason why. CMIIW.

Anyway, has your issue been resolved OP?

@OP
It may be strange, but sometimes the problem maybe related to the connection, have you checked that the wallet is connected and synchronized?

Exodus have a well known vulnerability that Seed exposed in memory after unlocking the wallet There was a video of how it is easy to read your seed if someone gains access to your OS and therefore there is no encryption level that complicates access to your coins.
I don't know if this vulnerability has been fixed, but the privacy issues are enough to make you stay away from this wallet.

This can't be the problem.
To see how it works, I just installed the latest version of Exodus. The camera works without any problem and there is no need to sync the wallet. That should work even without internet connection.

I installed it on Linux, and it worked without any issues.

People are wondering why I used the wallet. It's one of the few desktop multicurrency wallets that came into my mind. Yes, it not open source and has a lot of vulnerabilities, but I am not using it to keep my long term stash. I was just using it to make small transactions of different coins in different chains.

I ditched it anyway after i did what I wanted to do. Thanks for the concerns.

>>snip<<
I don't think it's a case of drivers as the camera perfectly works with other apps such as zoom.

Can you confirm that your camera is working fine with other applications, and that latest drivers are installed?

Ditched it. I was just using it for a few small transactions since it was multicurrency and had the desktop version.

The only recent installation was Exodus, but the camera has been working well all along with other apps.

On Windows nope, but It works on Linux. Anyway, I ditched the wallet software.

But on testing, it worked well on linux using the same internet connection.

Any chance Exodus doesn't have permission to access your camera?
You may need to go to your OS settings and turn on camera access for Exodus.

Manage app permissions for your camera in Windows (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/manage-app-permissions-for-your-camera-in-windows-87ebc757-1f87-7bbf-84b5-0686afb6ca6b#WindowsVersion=Windows_10)

Good idea, however Windows is weird with these app permissions. By default, they should be on for everything that requires camera access to work properly. There is an on/off switch to allow Microsoft Store apps to access the camera, and there is a second on/off switch to allow 3rd-party desktop apps. The weird part is you get a list of 3rd-party desktop apps that can access the camera, but you can't manually allow or disallow the permissions. I am looking at my system right now, and Telegram and Zoom are two apps that have access to the camera. I can't remove these permissions from the systems settings menu. I can only turn off access for all apps on the list. I guess the better place to check is the settings of Exodus wallet to see how it's set up there.

I think the problem is with my windows, as it's either blocking some apps from accessing the camera or just some stupid bug. Other video and social apps like Zoom, WhatsApp, telegram, browsers access the camera flawlessly   ;D

Out of curiosity, I tried checking out electrum and this is what happened

Electrum has a setting where you can pick the camera input source.
It's in "Tools->Preferences->Misc->Video Device", check the correct camera is not pre-selected.

So it doesn't work there either. Maybe you or Windows updated the camera's drivers recently and the new ones aren't working properly. Access your Device Manager and see if you can manually update them from there. Alternatively, try to roll back to an older version if that button is clickable and allows you to do it.

It turns out it was another third party app that was causing the issue, manycam (manycam.com). It's a live-streaming app which was installed on my Windows OS. I discovered this thanks to @nc50lc's suggestion

I uninstalled the app and everything works just fine right now. The App manages the webcam by default, and it ends up not being compatible to other less used apps like crypto wallets.

Thanks everyone  ;)

I will leave this thread open in case anyone else gets the same issue as mine and wants to comment.
