Title: The power of punctuation
Post by: Obari on January 18, 2023, 05:59:42 PM
I came across this image below on a Whatsapp status and I had to screenshot because it got my attention because I saw how much punctuation really worked
https://i.imgur.com/a6TVmPo.jpg

Most times, i don't punctuate my writings and when I do, I really don't do it well because i don't want someone reading my post with a different meaning from what I wrote.
So I had to brought this issue to the forum as a wake up call  for us to punctate our writings, as this will go a long way, for better understanding of our writings by others.

N/B: I hold no right to the image and I got it from a Whatsapp status and aso tried searching for the original post to get the link to it but couldn't find it, so you guys should bear with me please.

You see as the female in the class punctuated it and shifted attention and meaning to something else with the use of Colon. Na the male get the punctuation that still maintained the meaning of what the Prof wrote. The two comma in between explain am well.

Punctuation marks actually has an effects on sentences,  because with punctuation marks u will know if a sentence is actually a question or its not. It's also used to know where a sentence ends and the start another sentence.

A statement can be miscommunicated if proper punctuation marks is not put at the proper places in other to aid the reader to read and know the true meaning of the sentence.

I’m not going to pretend that I’m an English professor or something. Using acceptable grammar is important but it doesn’t need to be perfect. Lots of people who go to university/college & do really well end up in average jobs.

It’s good to be able to write/type a coherent letter or email but you don’t have to be Charles Dickens to do well in life. This forum is full of smart people so I’d say we don’t see too many dumb people here but the internet is full of them.

We have a saying in this part of the world that goes "Who English help"  to an extent it's true because of the lack of white collar jobs after school but the thing is being able to speak properly has an advantage too,  you might be opportuned to chair an occasion and bet me if you can't speak correctly when it comes to English u won't want to be given that position, so apart from the aspect of no job after school speaking correctly it's very important because you might be called upon in Church, meetings and any other social events and if you are not able to express yourself correctly then you won't be happy with yourself.

So even in punctuation there is gender inequality? Or rather say, women find a way to defend themselves, even with using punctuation. Facking lol.
Though I totally agree with the girls in that class, I know from experience.😉
