Title: How to keep account secure, is there 2-step verification for forum accounts?
Post by: stex2009 on January 20, 2023, 01:43:15 AM
What's the best way to keep our accounts secure. I had this issue few years ago when someone logged into my account and scammed someone. This happened at night and in the morning when I saw emails about some transaction, I logged in right away and changed the password. There must be a simple way to secure account?

Yeah unfortunately the forum still does not have 2FA despite numerous requests. Implementing this feature in the current forum software (SMF) is apparently difficult and resource-intensive.

So, for now you can follow the basic security practice (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4920096.0) to protect your account from getting compromised, e.g., using a strong password, being cautious of phishing attempts, and ensuring the security of your device. Also, stake your Bitcoin address to prove ownership in the event that your account is hacked.

To anyone who wants to check it out, here is the link to the scam accusation[1]. Any discussion on that can be brought up in that thread.

There must be a simple way to secure account?
- Do not click on random links as they can be phishing links looking to steal your log in details,
- Do not reveal your forum related email address on your profile or anywhere in the internet,
- Do not reuse the same email used on multiple platforms,
- Do not respond to unsolicited emails which require an action from you, like clicking a link,
- Use a secure password, not one you can easily remember,
- Stake your (account) bitcoin address[2].

I don't think it's possible for phishing link to steal your log in details, you need to input your email and password in order the phishing link record your information. Or when you download a file and you run it, if it's virus it will infect your device and spy every of your activites.

Quote
- Do not reveal your forum related email address on your profile or anywhere in the internet,
It's worth to mention if you use "report to moderator" you're reveal your email address to every moderators and administrators in this forum. Although the moderators said they wouldn't harm your email address, but you're still need to trust them in this situation.

No ideas for 2fa. Use this instead,, Tips on how to keep your Bitcointalk forum account safe (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5415461.0).
Addendum: Don't create many login sessions on different devices (even if it's yours) and in places where you shouldn't, it will reduce repeated password writing.

Unfortunately, we don't have it, what already explained by dbshck ,

what I will suggest is that don't log in to any phishing site, you can find some of the phishing for bitcointalk on google. So always make sure the link is correct what you are visiting. Don't keep the same password for more than one account on the internet. Always set a long password with smaller, capital, special characters, etc.

And you can store your bitcoin address here- Stake your Bitcoin address here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.msg10820715#msg10820715), this will help you to recover your account if unfortunately, it hacked.

Not all bad attempts to log in account can be successful.

Forum can lock your account anytime if forum tools detect suspicious login attempts. Forum account: security, privacy, and recovery (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5261696.0)

Anyway, best to self protect your account against any bad attempts to hack it.

Regularly change your captcha code (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5042674.0) (to bypass login captcha)
Stake your Bitcoin address with a sign message as some people advised.
Stake your PGP key if possible.

If you are talking about bitcointalk forum account, than you should first use unique strong password that was never used before for any other account.
I would also choose new email account, or sub-account that is dedicated only for this purpose and it should have 2fa protection, maybe Proton mail would be good.
You can also sign a message with your Bitcoin address that proves ownership of address and account connected with it.
Most important thing is to never click on any links received in forum personal messages, even if it's coming from established members, to avoid phishing attacks.

unfortunately at bitcointalk there is no 2 factor authentication system, maybe that will be a plan in the future.
but I will suggest steps so that our bitcointalk or email accounts are not easily hacked.

~ Be wary of messages asking for personal information
~ always check the validity of suspicious urls
~ Do not install applications carelessly, security must be checked first
~ keep the software always up to date
~ also be aware of impersonators, such as people who disguise themselves using the identities of people you know.
~ use a secure network and connection
~ protect accounts with strong passwords

There must be a simple way to secure account?
If you want to know a simple way to secure a bitcointalk account, then the answer is still about creating a strong password with a combination of letters, numbers and some symbols, and signing bitcoin message. The rest only depends on your habits of using the device and surfing the internet safely and wisely against all the risks that exist.

After all, you don't have to save your login on your PC or on your Android just because you want it to be faster and more practical when you login, so it's only about you and your habits. The point is, 2FA has not yet been integrated into forum and maybe it will be implemented in the future on EpochTalk or maybe not forever.

Use a strong password combination you will be fine, also if someone wants to steal your account they will have to get access to your email address that you use to registered the account, if your email account is not compromised your Bitcointalk account is safe. Still, I recommend using a very strong password for Bitcointalk only.

Sorry, is it only me who thinks that something is fishy here?
OP's account is here since 2013, he has a lot of posts (1000+) and also feedback (good and bad too, plus quite some retaliatory feedback from his side).. and now he's asking about 2FA and securing the account (instead of searching) in B&H and talks about an alleged problem from years ago?

The possibility is not only you, some of the users who provided answers must have known about it but they just want to help rather than ignore the question. It's a friendly to anyone, but only children are given pencils and adults are given pens instead. I mean Legendary doesn't need to ask about stuff like that (as a new user should) and he should know how to get answers to his questions instead of creating this thread.

I don't think with Bitcointalk forum have option securing account with 2-step, seems is not possibility added 2FA like on exchange account but you can add email notification when accessing to Bitcointalk forum. Talking about how secure account never use fake link and try to bookmark about Bitcointalk forum website.

Usually fake website Bitcointalk forum link sending through PM by some one want take your account access, but don't worry I think have other alternative for securing account with added securing answer, when account access by the other and try to change password they have answer correctly with your securing answer have been setting in your account.
