Title: How can I prevent my account from being hacked as newbie
Post by: Y3shot on January 25, 2023, 02:20:41 PM
As a newbie in bitcointalk.org what is the best way to prevent membership account from being hacked. Account hacked can be the most painful occurrence any member will experience in this forum. What are the ways to recover an account if eventually it gets hacked. I just want to know to do things right.

1. Learn to securely make yourself a bitcoin wallet.
2. Learn to sing a message with a bitcoin address of yours.
3. Stake your address and message (look for the style, make sure your message contains user name and date) : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.new#new
4. Keep that bitcoin wallet safely (offline); in case of problems you'll need to sign another message from that same address.

To avoid your account not to be hacked:

Know that the correct link is https://bitcointalk.org. If the link is similar but not the same, it is a fake one. This can happen if someone PM you a fake link. Do not click on the links someone sent you.

You can always check your IP address or the VPN you always use to access this forum: https://bitcointalk.org/myips.php

Always hide your forum email.

First steps to securing your forum account;

• Use a strong "one time" password, with a combination of alphabets, numbers and special characters.
It's one time cause you do not reuse it on other sites.

• Create a separate email addres to access the forum and do not reveal it anywhere on the internet.

• Bookmark the forum link and always log in through that to avoid falling for phishing links.

• Post a bitcoin address and sign a message using it (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3774520.0#post_point7).

• Stake that signed address and ensure someone verifies the message and quotes it. (Thread is already linked in this thread).

• Do not log into your account over unverified networks.

You should use strong and unique password for our forum account that was never used before.
Maybe think about using new email account have 2fa protection that is connected only with bitcointalk account and nothing else.
Never click on any links you receive in forum messages, that is one of the main phishing attacks, and sign a message with Bitcoin address to prove your ownership.
Doing this will be enough to protect you account, but you can also limit IP addresses in settings if you want to go hard core (I don't suggest doing that).

For creating accounts as a newbie you must know that you should have a safe and unpredictable password. Hackers won’t target newbie if they’re hacking here so less worry. Don’t store your passwords online for better. Don’t be tricked with phising sites that’s the best advice I can give for newbies. Be careful what you click always!

Other than signing an address, and having it either publicly posted or personal messaged to a forum controlled account. Then, it's pretty simple; randomly generated password, which is backed up locally. Just like you would with a Bitcoin wallet. Then, a secure email; one that you owe is actually better than relying on a service that might not be around all the time, and having that email secured by another password which is entirely different from your forum password. Again, generated randomly, and backed up locally.

That will prevent most direct attacks, then it's just keeping your wits about you, and avoiding social engineering attacks. If the forum database got breached, the passwords would be hashed, and having a complex enough password would mean you're pretty safe right after learning that it's been breached, and you could just change the passwords to something else, which would effectively make that compromised database useless.

Honestly, you can't really go wrong much from there.

So you have links to various sources pointing out how to recover your forum account if it gets hacked by any chance like you have to sign a message to verify your account and email you use to registered on the forum so you can have a detailed look at them first of all to understand it clearly.

I would also say that if possible don't enable a
always stay logged in because by any chance if you lost your device where you have done it and if gone to some wrong hands they can misuse your account so be sure about it.But also follow the useful advice given to you like following the original link which you can bookmark and login safely.

Avoid accessing bitcointalk or just any other website via public wifi because its more vulnerable and you can't even get a hint that your personal details are under someone's radar. And as others said stake your address so incase you are hacked it will help you to prove the ownership of the account.
