Title: Dark mode on Bitcointalk
Post by: Cryptoababe on February 16, 2023, 11:02:15 PM
I was scrolling around on my Telegram with dark mode. So, I saw a link that directed me to Bitcointalk. After opening it, I had to close it back immediately and come back later because everything was too bright for me emdure. Is there a way to add dark mode to the forum? If there is, I think it will be a very good idea.

No, there is no option for that and it's something that has been asked a lot of time

However, here is Bitcointalk with a dark mode

https://i.imgur.com/PCl2DLi.png

It works with any browser based on Chromium (Brave, Chrome, Opera, Edge, Vivaldi, Epic...)
Open in a new tab chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark and select "Enable"

Otherwise, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/dark%20mode?hl=en

You are going to need an add-on or extension. I use dark reader at the moment and good thing about it is you can adjust to any shade of darkness you want.

I think i have seen a few users suggest scripts here and there.

Just go to the addons page of your browser and install a dark mode. Beware some of them might be dangerous and you should only download it if you really need this and you trust the author of the addon. I recommend open source addons if you can find them. It sounds like you will be looking for a phone based browser addon and I think only certain addons are supported on mobile devices. You could inject custom css if you can code css but there is no official dark mode for the forum you would need to get a custom solution just for the forum but you can get universal addons like I said.

I was scrolling around on my Telegram with dark mode.
Just to let you know, telegram got a dark mode and a night mode. Try night mode, it is better than the first one.

Is there a way to add dark mode to the forum?
Since many users already suggested you the ways, I'd prefer you to use the mode suggested by @Bitcoin_Arena, it looks perfectly black (best for night usage too), while @LeGaulois's suggested mode gives you a bit dark grayish background screen if you observe it carefully.

There are plenty of ways. One of them is to install the BPIP extension to your browser (Chrome/Chromium based or Firefox) and, amongst a lot of other nice features, you can enable one of the dark themes from there.
The BPIP extension topic is: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5224821.0
and you can find it (for free) in the browser's add-ons/extensions "store". The links are also in the topic I've linked.

Thanks for all your response. They are very useful. Seems the dark mode only work on Desktops only.

It works with any browser based on Chromium (Brave, Chrome, Opera, Edge, Vivaldi, Epic...)
Open in a new tab chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark and select "Enable"

But it looks like this one I quoted should be able to work with mobile devices.

I don't know if you are a fan of Firefox browser for Android, but in case you are, the add-on (dark reader) is also available for the mobile browser. It's available on iOS as well.

However, is not available on chrome from Android.

I also had a desire to change theme on the forum to the night mode for a long time. I thank OP for creating this topic and members who answered, thanks to which I learned how to do it. The solution is simple, in fact, and if desired, it could be easily googled.

I'm interested in the next point. Can't these extensions somehow get account details like username and password? How safe is it to use it?

I understand that this is somewhat deviating from the original topic under discussion, but I believe that all the same, within the framework of the dark mode on Bitcointalk.

If the extension is designed for malicious purposes then yes, they will be able to get your details

For Dark reader, It's open source, and its development started around 2014. You can view and verify the code
Code:
https://github.com/darkreader/darkreader

You can also view and modify the permissions of the add-on or extension manager;

There is no dark theme switch, but you can install custom themes or use extensions and add-ons with dark themes, BPIP would be nice option that enable many other useful stuff for bitcointalk.

I don't know what web browser you use, but for Chrome or Brave browser you can do one small trick to enable dark theme for all websites, and all that without installing any script or extension.
You can do this by entering this text in your browser address bar: chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark

You can Enable any option you like most, restart your browser and you can always return back to Default option.

I have tried several modes of dark mode, but the forum does not work with them professionally, you can customize your experience using https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/stylish/

Sorry for this off topic reply, but why you hiding the total logged in time? Will it cause any problem related to account security or privacy? Isn't it just a meaningless number or am I missing something?

I use this extension on Google Chrome browser from this topic:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5178297

https://talkimg.com/images/2023/05/16/blob593032bd80a0e38c.png (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bitcointalk-script/ebkdbmfcjnnpoplaphlokgpehbddamcn)

It's a nice add-on with several features:
- You choose the dark mode There are several models that you can choose what suits you best
- Show or hide signature and avatar
- Show the price of Bitcoin and Ethereum at the top of the forum
- You can also enlarge or reduce the font of the forum as desired

However, is not available on chrome from Android.

You can use lemur browser (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lemurbrowser.exts) on android to make it work.

Firefox store won't allow to download directly so 'download file' first and then 'load unpacked' from extension menu.

Honestly this is best suggestion if you want dark mode for bitcointalk. Plenty settings to customize as well.

I never expected to see a dark mode version of a website, despite the fact that the website is not designed to have such features. This will actually have less of an effect on the eyes at night when someone is scrolling and participating in the forum. Your screenshot shows a dark mode on a laptop; shouldn't the dark mode be available on phones as well? A phone that runs browsers such as Chrome, Safari, or Mozilla Firefox.

I use the combination of Stylish chrome extension[1] and BPIP.org dark themes that shared by some user above to have a complete black appearance and removing those remaining blue header when you activate the Bpip.org plug-in dark theme.

I’m not on my desktop right now but I believe it’s the 3rd theme on Bitcointalk stylish that you need to combine on Bpip.org dark theme to have a better dark mode feature.

It's not related to any security and/or privacy matter, I bet it's just a personal preference and so be it.

IMO built dark modes scripts for this forum are just awful ot just this forum doesn't look better in dark modes, that's why i still prefer this light mode.

I have once logged in bitcointalk.org in a browser that displayed in a dark mode but the dark mood wasn't pleasant to my sight. It doesn't appear well blended and it troubles my side and that is why I had to stick to my normal sky blue forum background.
Bitcointalk is the only site that I browse without dark mode. Every other side including gambling sites, I immediately ensure the site has dark mode  and toggle it

Thanks @LeGaulois, your #flag link worked, I just need to change all the coloring and shades myself, I wouldn't suggest anyone to change any settings in that page if they don't understand the meaning of the flags.

Actually the customize theme is really good though it looks like I am not operating on the forum since I got used to the defaults colors. Using it on mobile phone makes it look dull maybe it could more smarter while using it on PC's.

It's good to have options though, otherwise everything will be boring because monotony kills interest. Nevertheless, I don't like dark mode on sites but I know a few friends who like activating the dark mode on theirs. Those who like it can have it. For me, In this case, dark mode doesn't look beautiful at all. The few times I ever tried that dark background on sites I use it was a struggle reading through for me. Texts looked like they were disappearing and I couldn't focus. If that feature becomes an option here, I will remain indifferent to it.

Dark mood has been suggested severally and at the end, nothing is done about it in here. I just think Theymos doesn't wanna have the forum with too much irrelevancies.. especially when some peeps were against it and suggested different ways like using bpip, enabling force-darkmood etc..
I still think it's not necessary since we've got alot to work on; already there's a problem that seems unending - Scam and Spam - which, with all our might, we've been fighting all year round...the task continues till whenever. So that alone is enough to face( even though Theymos is been creating another project since years now, who knows the challenges?)? ..so if you really wanna try the DM, then follow the steps you've been shown.

Oh I like this, and it’s quite stylish! Anytime you go on dark mode you feel much less strain on the eyes. I may have to put the dark mode on every so often to change things up a bit.

Dark mode can not only reduce eye fatigue but also work to help us become more focused. Correct me if I'm wrong, cause I always use dark mode for all my devices but one day, I wanted to change a bit because of using a color that was too monotonous, and I turned to brightness. I really can't focus on my work, but when I change back to the dark mode, the focus returns to me.
