Title: Where is the Catalan Whitepaper?
Post by: claudiaarques on February 20, 2023, 03:19:25 PM
A while ago, we could find the Catalan version of Bitcoin's whitepaper on the website https://bitcoin.org/. Currently, however, this language is not available.

I work at the Blockchain Center of Catalonia, and we'd like to make it available again. Does someone know the reason why it is no longer visible? We would like to help!

Thank you in advance!

Try checking whether the Wayback Machine has saved a link to it, they should've: https://web.archive.org

When was the last time you remember accessing it from the main bitcoin.org page?

I was taking a look at the site and it offers the Catalá language to navigate it as you can see in the next link, but once we look for the white paper it doesn't give us the Catalan option:

https://bitcoin.org/ca/paper-bitcoin

In the footer of that page, they give us the instructions to provide the translated document:

Quote
Voleu traduir el document a la vostra llengua? Visiteu el Repositori del paper blanc de Bitcoin a GitHub per obtenir instruccions i obrir un tema en cas de dubtes.

But the git hub repo they link to, doesn't work at all... so, not sure about how to add the Catalán page again. And if it was there at some point, maybe you can find it on the way back machine page.

EDIT:

I found it: https://github.com/vsus/Bitcoin-Llibre-Blanc
https://bitcoin.org/files/bitcoin-paper/bitcoin_ca.pdf

I've traced it to this commit when Catalan was removed from the white paper translations page:

https://github.com/bitcoin-dot-org/Bitcoin.org/commit/02e2abb2d7285f89c88dadbb71af16626bfaa997
It was in 6 Sep 2022.

I've played with the wayback machine and I've got the versions from 31 Oct 2020; if somebody has the patience can look more.
However, the web page is: https://web.archive.org/web/20201031235719/https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-paper
And the Catalan pdf is: https://web.archive.org/web/20201016112752/https://bitcoin.org/files/bitcoin-paper/bitcoin_ca.pdf

I recommend double checking it and getting multiple people confirm the document is well written before asking/re-adding it.

Going over some sparse archived snapshots, the Catalan version was still available on the 1st of September 2022, but was no longer accessible from the 24th of September 2022 onwards for some reason:
https://web.archive.org/web/20220601000000*/https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-paper (https://web.archive.org/web/20220601000000*/https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-paper)

I haven’t managed to find an explanation as to why the translation has been pulled down. Perhaps, another way of trying to get it back up would be to contact the author of the Catalan translation (https://web.archive.org/web/20220701130004/https://vicentsus.org/), though he’s barely active on Twitter and his personal site is down.

Did some digging and made this anon account to share links for posterity of this translation

Here is the Github commit history where Cobra Bitcoin deleted the card for it from the website, unsure of the reasoning why
https://github.com/bitcoin-dot-org/Bitcoin.org/commit/02e2abb2d7285f89c88dadbb71af16626bfaa997

The PDF file is still in the repo in the right directory and can is accessible here:
https://github.com/bitcoin-dot-org/Bitcoin.org/blob/be59c8c3733b3815055e4ef02208902f4ef8fecd/files/bitcoin-paper/bitcoin_ca.pdf

That said the url on the website leads to the 404 error:
https://bitcoin.org/files/bitcoin-paper/bitcoin_ca.pdf

Respect is due to Vicent Sus for the translation, seems his website is offline but I believe a mention of their work would be respectful once republished on bitcoin . org

Besides the archived versions of the Bitcoin whitepaper in Catalan we referenced earlier on in this thread (essentially retrievable from TheWayBackMachine), and that referenced in the above post, there’s also a cached version on bitcoin.org:

https://bitcoin.org.cach3.com/files/bitcoin-paper/bitcoin_ca.pdf

Of course this doesn’t resolve the mystery of why the translation of the bitcoin whitepaper (paper blanc) was pulled-down from the website at some point during September 2022, whilst the whole website can be set to Catalan through the language selection dropdown box (meaning it’s not something related to the language per se).

Thank you DdmrDdmr - at least the version is still circulating on the net. Would be a shame to lose such work done by bitcoiners in past.
