Title: My first pizza purchase using Bitcoin in lightning network
Post by: Helena Yu on February 25, 2023, 02:54:34 PM
5 years ago or February 25, 2018 was the first pizza purchase using Bitcoin in lightning network by Laszlo Hanyecz (https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/lightning-dev/2018-February/001044.html), that's make me interested for me to buy a pizza using Bitcoin in lightning network too. Then I search a pizza restaurant which accept Bitcoin payment, however they only accept Bitcoin on-chain network. Actually I can just pay it since I have Bitcoin on-chain network, but I take a challenge for only pay in lightning network. Surprisingly they're still don't know the existence of lightning network, it took me for 10-15 minutes to explain them and ask to install a lightning network wallet e.g. Bluewallet since this wallet is really easy to use.

So I ordered a pizza with black olive topping, it's cost for $6 or 25,740 Satoshis. When I have pay it, they're quite shocking because the fee is very very low. After that, they saying they have a plan to accept Bitcoin in lightning network payment because it will help the customer to not get charged for higher fees and they do get the same benefit too.

Have you ever bought a pizza using Bitcoin in lightning network? ;)

Great job, Helena Yu. You are a part of history now. Pay $2 and be recorded in the history (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5440409.0)  ;D

Have you ever bought a pizza using Bitcoin in lightning network? ;)

I would feel happy if I could pay for pizza with Bitcoin. I don't have the chance here to use bitcoin for daily necessities as I live in a country where Bitcoin isn't legal. A lot people don't even know the existence of Bitcoin.

Nice and yummy, enjoy your pizza. I might post on my successful onlyfan payment via lightning network in the future, though I don't think the images of what I get in return would be appropriate to post here.🤣

You're a legend! Enjoy your bitcoin pizza  8)

I've never bought anything via lightening network yet. Before that, I only used ownr wallet prepaid crypto card to buy things. And yes, I also bought pizza with bitcoin haha

I hope soon I'll have a chance to use the lightening network.

You have made a unique way to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the first bitcoin purchase. Also, congratulations on your first personal purchase of pizza for btc.

Why is the BTC-community still not doing a similar flash mob? Are there few pizzerias that accept bitcoin?

I think this pizzeria could make a small discount and round up the price to 20.000 Satoshis in honor of this day. Maybe they just didn't know nothing about Laszlo pizza?

I never used a lightning network. Thanks for mentioning one of the lightning network wallet names. I didn't know there were wallets for lightning network. I thought only whoever owns the node can do the transaction. My first Bitcoin usage was on an online casino website. But I didn't purchase anything with bitcoin before 2021. I bought some kind of subscription from a reseller and he was accepting bitcoin. I paid him via coinbase transaction. After that, I bought many things from online using Bitcoin as payment method. Not all of them are companies, Some resellers accept bitcoin. But, I will try lightning network. Not sure if they will accept lightning network or not. Let's give it a try.

I love pizza, and it looks delicious pizza!! 😋😋

I have never bought pizza using the bitcoin lightning network because no one in my area has provided this payment yet, even though there is, for example, using an on-chain network, I will definitely buy it but still it doesn't exist because it is still illegal because every payment is not allowed with bitcoin except fiats.

I hope someone finds this out later because anyway I want to keep trying to buy Pizza with bitcoin payments on lightning network.

Wow great job but now let me say just one thing, you had the blue wallet installed but did you know that from April 30th support for LN custodial ends?  Then move your sats while you can to another wallet.

I am sure your pizza tastes better when you pay for them using BTC :D ::), Laszlo would be proud of you and everyone who has bought a Pizza using BTC ::). It is good that you had the opportunity to spend BTC and you took it, there are so many people who want to spend BTC but they cannot because of where they live. BTC is a currency and and i believe in the future people would be able to spend it from anywhere in the world. I hope you enjoyed your pizza and i would like to read more stories from other members on how they spent their BTC.

New history for you because you are one of the people who feels paying for pizza with bitcoin lol

On the other hand, there is also one thing that should be appreciated in this case, because if you do that and take the time to explain the lightning network, then indeed at this time there will definitely be an update regarding the Pizza shop that you buy by having other options in paying for bitcoins.
I want to do the same but unfortunately in my country payments like this are still not available hopefully in the future it will follow.

^ Not yet but I wanted to try, unfortunately, there is no store that accepts LN here in my country.
But anyway, congratulations on your first pizza purchase using BTC in the LN upon purchasing. This is an exciting moment for you and for the BTC community as a whole, I remember Pizza day.
By using the LN to purchase pizza, you have demonstrated the power and potential of this revolutionary technology. The LN is a second-layer solution that enables near-instant transactions with low fees, making it an ideal solution for microtransactions like buying a pizza or even coffee. As more businesses and merchants adopt BTC using LN, it becomes increasingly viable as a mainstream currency. You have made a meaningful contribution to the BTC community that becomes an inspiration to adopt BTC using LN transactions.

I have never bought a pizza using Bitcoin on the Lightning Network. How to buy Bitcoin in a country where 70%-80% of people don't know? And how to use bitcoins. And how can we do such things using Bitcoin in that country. But we won't give up hope that we too will one day be successful and buy pizza using bitcoins on the lighting network.

Topic title is saying that Lightning Network was used for purchase but from your post it looks like you paid with Bitcoin mainnet.
Lightning Network can be a bit confusing for newbies with all different custodial wallets, now we have Blue wallet temporary removing Lightning Network (temporary).
Maybe you can clarify this and tell us what wallet you used for sending this payment.

Have you ever bought a pizza using Bitcoin in lightning network? ;)
Nope, but I use BTC to buy other things.

I haven't actually and I'm still looking for those pizza stores or little restaurants where I can pay using bitcoin. Although I've done some transactions and paid using bitcoin but specifically for pizza, I haven't done it yet. If by a chance I see one on my way to any of my destinations, I'd be glad to stop by and do it.

You are in the Elite list of people who bought Pizza with bitcoin, hope it was delicious.

I haven't actually, not many places offer that option.

Laszlo actually bought two large pizzas in 2018 with lightning. Here you can read more about it: https://stacker.news/items/142221

Here are the lightning pizzas from laszlo:

I actually bought a pizza to celebrate lightning pizza day though (25 Feb)

I'm craving pizza now, and I tried to search for any pizza store that accepts bitcoin, but I couldn't find one. That is pretty cool now that it is easy to buy pizza in your place. For sure, a lot of shops there accept bitcoin as payment, but mostly they are using the traditional one and not the lightning network, which is why it has a high fee. You know the pizza for sure tastes better as you paid for it with bitcoin. I hope there will be a pizza shop that accepts bitcoin as payment so that I can also experience buying it using bitcoin.

So many beautiful stories, it's great to see such stories around. I see such stories all the time.  It seems that Bitcoin has gained a much bigger spread worldwide due to which various products and services can be bought with Bitcoin. Buying Pizza With Bitcoin There is a historical story where a person named Laszlo Hanyecz bought a pizza with 10,000 bitcoins. At that time Bitcoin was first used to buy anything. And yet you can buy a pizza for just 25,740 Satoshis ($6) dollars. This shows how fast and how much Bitcoin has improved. congratulations man

I would have love to also be part of history by purchasing pizza using Bitcoin in lightning network but unfortunately for me there's no place in my locality that offers such service maybe I just have to wait a little longer because with the rate of Bitcoin adoption I'm sure something like that will become operational and then I'll have the chance to partake in it. And maybe become the second Laszlo but instead of purchasing 2 pizzas with 10,000 Bitcoins, I'll purchase 10,000 pizzas with $2 worth of Bitcoin.  ;D

No, I never buy a pizza or other things using Bitcoin in the lightning network in a local store because it is hard to find the store. Not many people know that bitcoin can be used as an alternative payment system. Lucky you, you can use Bitcoin to buy a pizza, so I guess you will do it again the next day. Anda if the price of bitcoin increases, that is your benefit to pay using small sats to buy something like pizza. If I can buy something using the lightning network in a local store, I will try it, and perhaps, that could explain to them how to use Bitcoin for payment.

I haven't had this luck yet. When I heard Laszlo's story I felt very sorry for him but when I thought that if he hadn't bought a pizza that day with 10 thousand bitcoins, maybe Bitcoin wouldn't have seen such a big boom today.  So I've been very interested in buying that memorable pizza with Bitcoin but so far I haven't been able to because none of the pizza vendors in my area accept Bitcoin  :'(

Yes, Bitcoin has grown very fast and will grow more in the coming days. op's story is really nice and he was able to buy pizza with bitcoins like that memorable incident of Laszlo Hanyecz, it is luck for him.

Then you have completely lost the plot with what Bitcoin is supposed to be used for. Original Pizza man has never regretted it. And we shouldn't too on anyone's behalf.

Try holding coins forever. Oh wait, that's what 99% of alts do.

And see where that leads.

I don't like Pizza, I don't spend my bitcoin for Pizza but will probably spend it on something that will benefit me in the long term.
This doesn't mean I disagree on how someone spend their bitcoin on anything, they are free to do it for whatever they think is good regardless of trying out the network or just hype.

For whatever reason, I'm happy to hold onto my bitcoin so far instead of spending them and I tend to use fiat for any transaction. In the future it will only be different, and I hope we all benefit from it.

If you're relating about the OP purchasing Pizza with $6 worth of Bitcoin through the lightning network I dont see any reason why he/she will regret it in the future. Why did i say that?
1. He/she just did an important advertisement of the Bitcoin lightning network to a business owner who will properly make the lightning network known to their countless customers.
2. Every crypto enthusiast knows that there be huge traffic in the crypto market in the next future and Laszlo Hanyecz that spent 10,000 BTC on pizza technically has thousands more and if he did do it BTC maybe not notice as a means of payment in the year 2018.

Pizza is not my favorite food and I dislike Pizza, I agree with many people spent their money purchase pizza but I don't convert any cryptocurrency assets with something not profitable like food or any other thing. But small fund purchasing to buy Pizza is not matter because many people sell their Bitcoin worth $500 until $2,000 to purchase or transaction in daily day needed.

Will difference worth with price of $6 purchase Pizza from OP and Bitcoin price right now, its seems how amazing increasing up from Bitcoin and we can't expected what happen next ten years later.

It's quite amazing that the same guy still gets it. Maybe this guy did also the same thing with Bitcoin cash and other variations of Bitcoin? Hmm. And maybe this guy was a solid pizza lover because this food is always the one that he uses in his experiments. But after that, I would also like to congratulate you OP. The lack of support of BTC lightning network didn't stop you from doing what you desire but instead you convince those owners to try it and it was a successful attempt.

Bitcoin lightning network is not a new thing anymore and it had some certain benefits than the original Bitcoin but I think it only lacks in exposure. The focus of the people is on the main coin and maybe they think both are just the same.

Our pizza only worth $2 and that is enough for 4 persons. I can't pay using bitcoin since the existence of cryptocuurency here is not that famous. I am using different payment method but my money is from bitcoin. Hoping that someday bitcoin payments here will become available so that I don't need to sell and transfer to another wallet (3rd party).

Congrats for succesfully buying that pizza!!

You have cajones of steel for imploring the store to adjust upon your preferred payment method OP, not that it's a bad thing. Glad that you were able to try purchasing stuff or services using bitcoin yourself which is something that I wouldn't see myself doing because of the fact that I'm afraid of ever spending bitcoins outright. In any case, things like these are what makes the adoption we are looking for happen in the real world. Not fancy seminars, not big name projects that uses bitcoin's popularity to cash in and rob people of their hard-earned money. Small-time businesses and/or close to people enterprises that allow bitcoin payments for services and products they offer are what would really drive this adoption to happen.

It doesn't even close to 30 years, without foods you're only survive for a month :D

If he's saying spend Bitcoin to buy a pizza is wasting money, he should realize he's also buy foods with his money, where the money can be used to invest Bitcoin lol. No one should regret if they spent Bitcoin to buy a thing because that's what Satoshi Nakamoto's aim to create Bitcoin, it's used as a currency.

There are no pizzerias in my city that accept Bitcoin for payment. But there are several establishments where you can pay with cryptocurrency directly in the cafe for your food.A few years ago in my city it was possible to order sushi home and pay for the order with a crypt and their business did not last so long, they worked for less than a year since they were not a network institution.Recently, more and more businesses have been connecting to the possibility of paying with cryptocurrency for their goods or usulug, and this is cool.

Bitcoin acceptance is accumulated within specific region. This needs to get widen and it is possible only through you and me. Everyone who are part of the bitcoin community need to start accepting bitcoin into the business owned by them. This will create awareness as well as let more stores have bitcoin acceptance. With most businesses, they fear of accepting bitcoin just for legal issues as the governments haven't officially announced the legality of cryptocurrency usage within the country.

People can say whatever they like, but when pizza is purchased with Bitcoin, it tastes that much better  ;D

I think that if more pizza places would accept Bitcoin, they would see a nice way to market their business, seeing as pizza and Bitcoin have a sort of tradition among the community. In fact, I would even go as far as to say that any business that accepts Bitcoin would be favored over a business that does not. Simply out of respect and love for Bitcoin.

But I guess not many people see the marketing opportunity yet.

This is definitely one of the most impressive security measures, spending Bitcoin to buy pizza. This means Bitcoin seems to be commonplace in the area and there's nothing against it. The use of Bitcoin as a means of payment is still being debated in various countries. therefore, if there is an experience like this and there are merchants that accept Bitcoin, it will be very interesting, right?

unfortunately in Italy few people know of the existence of bitcoin which can be used as an alternative payment, the government has never legally recognized bitcoin as a payment method and we would hardly have a turnaround on this topic in the short term. for the rest I agree with you, if everyone worked to accept bitcoin, knowledge and use of it would expand

This sounds pretty interesting. I am yet to fully grasp the lightning network is all about, although I learned that just like the name sound, transactions done on the network are close to the speed of light. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to use it someday in making a purchase or payment for a service. But until then, the pizza looks yummy. This unrelated though but this story kinda reminds me of that guy who paid his pizza with 10 bitcoin.

Lightning is awesome for small purchases, but I would still not put a considerable amount of Bitcoin in there. The only bitcoin I trust is the one in the blockchain.
