Title: Looks like it might be time to dust off my old Antminer S5
Post by: adaseb on May 08, 2023, 04:01:22 AM
I got an Antminer S5 somewhere in a box collecting dust in my basement. I think with all these crazy BTC fees we are getting it might be profitable again.

I modded this ASIC and it’s fairly quiet and you can probably sleep in the same room. Would sure bring back memories to the good old 2015 days when Bitcoin was $200.

If electricity permits and even if it does not as long as you are a firm believer of Bitcoin increase in price in the future and you expect like many others no longer than the end of 2025 to be the next bull run go ahead and turn it on,even if it is just for a few days or weeks.Even better if you can sleep in the same room with it meaning it is extremely quiet and the more quiet it is the less energy should it consume no?

I wonder why we got to these crazy Bitcoin fees as nothing really happened in the market to make such huge fees out of nowhere.

Ok if you want to burn money, sure you can, but this thing will never be profitable again.

Wrong time of year in the northern hemisphere, no need for a heater.

It was mostly made as a joke. However we are at the point where many blocks earn as much in miner fees as the block reward itself. So profitability is almost doubled.

Some people are paying 800 sata/byte now which is about $50 for a small 2 output transaction. If this continues then many old ASICs might be slightly profitable again, maybe not the S5 but the recent generations of BTC ASICs.

This is pretty much how I feel about it. If you need the heat, you might as well take advantage. This time of year though, when a lot of people are having to start running their air conditioners for summer, even if it was profitable to mine, it might not be when you factor in the cost and inconvenience of having to cool the miners.

Bitmain Antminer S5 - 1.155Th/s  and 600W.
When an ordinary ASIC gives 100 times more hashrate, then I would not run Antminer S5 even with free electricity. $4 a month is a very small income and it's already summer. The cost of transactions must still grow several times to think about this ASIC.
