Title: Images from Imgur have been restored
Post by: jayce on May 24, 2023, 06:15:28 PM
I was about to update my thread by replacing the broken imgur images, but found out that all of them have been restored. Seems imgur guys have realized that most of their users are from bitcointalk and reddit. I hope there will be no change again on imgur so it saves my time to update all of the unrestored images for my clients. However I prefer to use talkimg instead, at least for now, to avoid double effort if someday imgur makes another joke in future.

I just checked through all my post histories with images, and I notice that all have been restored. This is something amazing; maybe Imgur might have checked through their traffic and seen the reduction since their upgrade ended up stopping BTT users and Reddit users from enjoying their service.

Or maybe Thymos has found a new way to resolve the issue since his last thread seeking a possible solution to the issue.🤔🤔

Sweet, thanks for posting this update.  I haven't really been paying attention to the imgur situation, but I've seen a few threads about it and saw that some images had disappeared, so I gathered that there was a problem using them to host pics for use on the forum.  I've posted a lot of screenshots and whatnot using imgur, but it's not as if it'd break my heart if they no longer showed up in my posts (which are likely long since buried under the mountain of other posts and threads that keeps growing by the minute).

I'm too lazy to search the forum for answers, so what was the problem?  It wasn't just a bitcointalk and reddit issue, was it?

Edit: Whoops, never mind.  I just saw Theymos's thread pop to the surface and will read it now.

No, it was not solely a bitcointalk or reddit issue, but affected both forums significantly.
Imgur made changes to their domain name, from imgur.com to imgur.io, and along with this made changes to their terms of service which invalidates any old image not linked to a registered account on imgur. This lead to so many images posted on the forum through them being broken at the time.

I think this was the first thread [1] on the issue.

Yeah not sure what they thought in the first place. They tried hardly to be a new 9gag and ignored the fact that most people were just using their service as image hosting only.

Have you tried using imgur again this time?
I thought we could all just watch the image shown, but now theymos seem to have made their decision.

I've tried it, but;

Embedding imgur links is not supported in new posts

So I thought imgur is no longer allowed to be used to post image on forum since theymos made his new rules, and now talkimg and imgbb are the solution.

Yes I tried to upload one of my imgur images here as a proof but got an error, yet I thought perhaps it's a temporary error. Then I saw theymos post and yeah, seems we cant use imgur permanently.

Please, apart from image hosting, what other services does imgur offer? ;D I don't even bother to browse the site let alone to create an account. I knew them through this forum

This is indeed a very good news for the Bitcointalk community. Imagining going through some old topics posted many years back and not been able to grasp the information that is been passed because of imgur broken images.

From the business perspective imgur tend to loose more because they lost the traffic that they would have generated from our forum members and other platforms the stop supporting. Also, they have tarnish their image as users will start resorting to other image hosting sites. Thank God we now have our own image hosting site created by a forum member.

Thank for the news, jayce. Of course now all my images are displaying properly [especially those on imgur]. So far I've used other image hosting services instead of imgur since they created some mess for forum users. They lost a lot of visitors and that has made their site traffic go down, but that is not our responsibility.

And now that theymos have prevented us from using imgur, it's worth it.

As far as I know, Imgur still primarily focuses on image hosting, and it remains one of the most popular image hosting sites on the internet. But in recent years, they also include video hosting, community features such as commenting and upvoting, and the ability to create memes using their built-in meme generator tool. Imgur also has a messaging feature that allows users to share images and videos privately with others.

Yeah. They were the standard for a long time, and I used them frequently on this site. But considering the recent problems, I support this decision.

It was a very serious case that some people who don't even have access to their image again apart from on the Bitcointalk forum were really thinking of how they could get back those pictures to reupload them again, because I saw that there was no user I ever came across who gave a fuck about the error images; they were just there. Although most of my images do not have those errors because I did not use Imgur to host them, but it's good imgur chosed to restore back to the old domain; otherwise, they would have lost a lot of customers, and perhaps some people are already making their choices for Talkimg.com to improve their image.

Thanks for information. I planned to replace some of my imgur links with talkimg links. Not all, because big part of these my post isn't relevant anymore. So, seems that I will not have to do it, I'll keep old imgur links.
theymos disabled adding new images, but it's not problem at all when we have alternative, which maybe even better than imgur.

It is high time for someone to create an alternative platform for these images. Everyone felt helpless and unsure of what to do, particularly the original poster (OP) of the announcement thread and the bounty managers.

I would even say that this measure is mostly aimed at NSFW content, Bitcointalk had no need for it. But as far as I can see, Uploading NSFW images straight to Reddit is also now allowed.

I guess you didn't see this TalkImg.com - Image hosting for BitcoinTalk (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5450546.0)

That is a nice move from imgur website and site management. But since we have one of us here as already created image hosting site for the forum, we should encourage him and patronize him to use the site, so that even if in case there is image break out from the site he can fix it very fast since he is with us. Though using imgur and TalkImg is for a personal choice. You can use anyone at the time of using the image.

Almost all old post posts are using imgur to host image I almost see images with proxy invalid to all old post but after this news trying to access those thread again all images is now fine.

However, imgbb is a great option when imgur is down this is the only option that works on the forum recently.

That's what i'm using years already actually because imgur cannot be used in smartphone browsers without downloading their app, although you can, if you will switch to desktop mode, but it's annoying to use desktop mode in phone browsers.

The question is, have they also reversed their decision to remove old images that are not linked to any account from their platform (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5452415.msg62230551#msg62230551) as par the update they made in their terms of service?

Because it would make no sense to continue using Imgur if the images are going to be deleted in the near future anyway. I wouldn't want to create an account on Imgur just to upload images in the forum.

Users can also Upload videos, memes, gifs, and images to simply earn money from views, grow your page, and profit from advertising. Imgur has over 100 million monthly users and is a massive site. You will make a lot of money if you know your way around it.

Oops! That's a harsh decision on them from theymos, but I have nothing to say than they deserve it.
They were blocking Bitcointalk proxy. Wasn't it harsher for all users? What if they start blocking the Bitcointalk proxy again? The same thing will happen again, and we must find a solution. To prevent the same situation in the future, theymos decided not to allow new images from Imgur anymore.

But to prevent this from happening again, you'll get an error if you try to embed imgur images in posts from now on.

Moreover, theymos will create a page recommending services like image hosting. He is looking for feedback from community members. You may suggest to him the best image hosting you are using.

I'd like to create a page which recommends services for hosting forum images, and mention this in the error message you get when you try to use imgur. Other than TalkImg, which ones are good?

Personally, I would recommend using Talkimg since they are the only service exclusively for BitcoinTalk forum users.

Excellent information, BTW. I didn't know that. Is it like Facebook/Youtube monetization? They will show ads on my content page and share part of their revenue. Does it work like that? I will try to get more info about it. But, Can you please tell me if they have some special requirements like I have to upload x number of content or I should have x number of followers/subscribers/viewers etc.?

thanks for sharing this. I was even trying to make out time someday to start deleting all my posts history that has an image on them because of Imgur's invalid image display. Now, I think I shouldn't again but I still yet it will be wise for me to start using the https://www.talkimg.com/ that was created by you. Which I think won't act strange in the future like Imgur.

Either they are back or not i think people have soughted for more alternative, maybe they just use one of their nasty acts to chase people away from themselves through what they did, they should know that that such is gone for now, people were now used to other means they can use in hosting their images, thanks for he prompt update on that, imgur will have to learn their lessons from this maybe later in future, they will reconsider steps before implementing them.

I guess they realized it late as I beleive a lot of forum users have shifted to TalkImage. It is better to use this service than Imgur as we don't know will it run smoothly next time. I never expect an established image hosting service to be so unprofessional. When they know a lot of users are from the forum then why make their life miserable. I am not going to use it's service anymore. If they have restored the links then it is good for anyone who had lot of images hosted on their website.

Imgir problem caused a lot of effect on this forum. If it wasn't restored then all Bitcointalk members would have chosen Talkimg and everyone would have focused on talkimg and Imbb. but now that Imgur is restore maybe everyone will use it mostly again. I don't understand if imgur had this as a joke.  Or they ran into this problem while adding a new feature. but imgur will move all over again for it to be fixed again

After all that happened and what IMGUR did to our images, I don't think I can still trust them there's a possibility that they will do this again, compared to talkimg where the developers are part of Bitcointalk he can address all issue that comes along with the images.

Forum images are very important they contribute to the discussion and give us a clearer understanding of what the thread creator is posting, we have a saying a picture tells a thousand words, and we need a reliable one and talkimg can give it to us.

Personally I'm happy with imgur's decision to show my old images back in posts, so I don't have to restore them manually regardless of using a script or something. But I've actually switched to imgbb or to TalkImg to host my next image. I was disappointed with imgur, of course it caused me to delete the site from my bookmarks since the problem started.

My temporary solution is imgbb and TalkImg, the rest I know some people also use other image hosting services. It doesn't matter at the moment TalkImg is the most recommended on the forum.

I was about to update my thread by replacing the broken imgur images, but found out that all of them have been restored.
Not much, only 1 topic on the sub board and 1 topic on the local board which was completed in my plan to fix all the damaged images due to using imgur which has an important meaning in the topic or quotes and replies that I made, it turns out like this information that all the images have been restored.

Seems imgur guys have realized that most of their users are from bitcointalk and reddit. I hope there will be no change again on imgur so it saves my time to update all of the unrestored images for my clients.
I think they realized from the start that the percentage of users who use imgur's service is dominated by users from this large forum amidst the many services that are the same as theirs.
When the imgur people made a decision that caused all the broken pictures in the forums, there were forum users who rushed to find solutions like TryNinja and even joker_josue had created the image hosting site TalkImg.

However I prefer to use talkimg instead, at least for now, to avoid double effort if someday imgur makes another joke in future.
I'm sure imgur people won't make new jokes anymore because as we discussed above maybe they realize that many users of this big forum use imgur to make imgur even more famous.
Maybe, not a certainty.
By the way, the changes made by imgur can help designers who have used imgur in their work from the start.

So this means that imgur themselves reverted the changes and now everything is back to normal.

I also saw some of the threads having their images back and thought that Theymos had come up with any solution or maybe LoyceV downloaded images (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5453227.msg62263662#msg62263662) have been helpful in restoring all the images but it seems that imgur themselves corrected everything.

For the last few days, since this issue appeared people started using talkimg and other services, i hope this trend continues.  :)

Imgur has done well to restore their services but I think it has already caused them some harm. The company needs to do a lot of work to boast the confidence of their clients and to attract some back. I am sure they have lost some customers. I might not be sure of others but I think I now prepare the services of Talkimg by @joker_jouse. I use to have some hitches in my early days of using imgur but my first experience with Talkimg was simple and hitch-free. So I think I will remain with Talkimg except Imgur brings up something extraordinary. I also find it a responsibility to support our own.

I seen Theymos suggest Talkimg himself. i am also using talkimg from now.

I think that what it is is that imgur added a new very restrictive per-IP limit on image downloads. So all ip.bitcointalk.org requests are blocked, but even many Tor exit nodes are being blocked, for example.

I'm not going to attempt to play some cat-and-mouse game with imgur, so people will just have to use a different service such as TalkImg.

I read alot about how them links were made invalid and it seemed to me that maybe imgur wasn't just ready to make any process simple for bitcointalkers - or maybe too many spam links were entrusting in there or still, people's privacies were too exposed to them?? ion even know.
I'm happy things have been brought back in place cus it actually made Theymos restless - just to see if images could be restored in place. I read an old post of about.. say - last two months and the whole thing was referenced with images that inferred more explanations to the whole context than the few words itself... I didn't understand a thing and it wasn't funny.

I had a negative assumption about imgur, as I believed they had deleted all the previous image databases. Turns out, that wasn't the case.
With this news, at least some people no longer need to edit their posts or use scripts to display images. Although imgur has restored image viewing, Talkimg remains a suitable choice for this forum.

Before using Talkimg, I always uploaded images on postimg.cc by creating a free account. I opted for this platform because they have a rule in place where images unrelated to an account will be automatically deleted after a certain period of time. That's why I prefer securing images before any regrets occur.

However, now Talkimg has become the top choice for this forum.

I am happy that old images can be restored again, but nothing has been done on the part of the forum except to prevent this problem in the future by banning Imgur, but they may delete old photos or restrict them, and therefore I hope that any solution will be taken instead of the false hope that the problem has been solved.
And try to avoid it in the future, although solutions like Talkimg seem appropriate now.

Has any of you contacted them to inform them of the importance of the images they have for the forum? They may provide an exception as long as we continue to use them.

All of my posts are restored! I was starting to think to reupload everything to another website but luckily I didn't have time to do it yet.

I'm starting to doubt if I'm going to continue using Imgur, I've used another host when Imgur is not responding but I guess I would still use Imgur since they already fix the problem. For some of my upload Talkimg is still a great alternative I guess it's easy to upload images, fast, etc.

Not a big issue on my part, my imgur account works great, and been using it for years already, and this is the first issue that I encounter.

thanks for sharing this.
May I ask the reasoning behind this decision (or at least why you were thinking in pursuing such objective). Preserving is always the best choice, independently of the work behind maintaining it readable...

When the imgur people made a decision that caused all the broken pictures in the forums, there were forum users who rushed to find solutions like TryNinja and even joker_josue had created the image hosting site TalkImg.

Just a note on the timeline of events.

The TalkImg project was already in development for 2 or 3 months. And the project was released to the community a week or two before the problems arose with Imgur. That is, it was not Imgur's problems that caused TalkImg to emerge. But the project was created because of these kind of problems!

It is true that I was very lucky, in that a few days after I launched TalkImg, this problem with Imgur occurred, and the project quickly became known in the community.

Thank you for the support that everyone has given.

Already replaced mine using Tryninja's script and have been using Talkimg for all new image uploads, better use bitcointalk product for bitcointalk things.

Seems imgur guys have realized that most of their users are from bitcointalk and reddit.

Dunno stats but I'd go with reddit, it has significantly higher user base compared to bitcointalk and most of them use imgur, it was redditor's go-to before Reddit started to host images and even after doing so users preferred imgur.

That's good to hear but I personally have given up on imgur and now use the www.talkimg.com service that joker_josue created as a very good alternative.

talkimg.com is easier to use and much better also joker_josue added BBcode for thumbnail, medium or full image, this is really cool and easy to use.

So it's good that all the members of the BitcoinTalk forum are migrating to the new service.

Most of their users aren't from bitcointalk but probably from Reddit. Bitcointalk just doesn't have that many active users to make an impact on Imgur. By the way, it's quite interesting if people move backto Imgur or Talkimg is going to take the place of it. For me, it turned into a habit to use Talkimg on this forum.

I think you have a man in Imgur and were informed that this would happen and took an advantage earier. Okay, I'm just kidding. Yeah, the timing was perfect and I think it gave a boost to the adoption of Talkimg. You have up to 4GB of images hosted on your website as it seems from your publicly available backup, did you expect such a big growth in such a short time?

We saw when you first created a topic on April 28, 2023 on TalkImg. The Imgur issue surfaced in early May and I am very pleased that your work has been dedicated to the bitcointalk forum.
One of the members who comes from my local, namely Indonesia, also helps translate the TalkImg project into our local language so that local members can see your work.

That is, it was not Imgur's problems that caused TalkImg to emerge. But the project was created because of these kind of problems!
Not because of them TalkImg came up. Nice assertion.
They should be aware that many forum members have promoted their hosting services.

It is true that I was very lucky, in that a few days after I launched TalkImg, this problem with Imgur occurred, and the project quickly became known in the community.

We have to thank you for this initiative.
Previously we also had LoyceV, TryNinja and DdmrDdmr who have produced invaluable work for the advancement of the forum.

I didn't expect such rapid growth. I expected to reach this value only in about 6 months. But, everything turned out very quickly, and what I had planned to invest in six months, I had to invest at the end of a week of the project.

I'm glad it was well accepted.

To be honest, before imgur have been restored, I was waiting that maybe a few days, weeks or a month where images uploaded on imgur will display on Bitcointalk forum once again and I didn't expect that it didn't take long before imgue have been restored. I was planning to edit my old posts that contains images but I was thinking that, what if the images uploaded on imgur will display again on this forum. The reason for not editing my old posts might be a waste of time because the images are now displayed once again where the time spend editing the posts would be better spend doing other things like learning more or other important tasks or goal.

Hope I'm not wrong.
All image posts that are still using imgur hosting return invalid.

It seems those of us who use image hosting to create posts should take the time to get things right. and yes TalkImg is the image hosting I will make my choice.
At first I also thought like you to delay fixing invalid images, but now imgur is back at it again.

it looks like theymos would have to implement the second option 2 on the poll thread he created. it'll become annoying if this keeps happening, it would be much better if the broken Imgur images are turned into links.

I will switch over to TalkIMG if possible but I upload graphs from all markets to imgur (account) anyway, just as an online album I can keep.    So Im not sure if they are tightening up access to be purely only via their website, not their current policy but seems they might go that way as its just a repeat of history from prior image hosts Ive used and I lost anything I put there eventually.
I often put media on Twitter though its not really supposed to be used as a host in that way, again mostly its for my own reference over time.   Imgur is not really working 100% I guess  I was not posting inline just as a URL link surely that'd be ok.  I use a hover extension that displays it just fine most of the time, not everywhere likes such usage but imgur used to be an exception to these hassles.
Hyperlinks have been the backbone of the web for decades now, blocking even that is sacrilege ; but of course due to traffic it happens I understand.  No idea who currently owns Imgur or who has taken it over etc.   I missed any rule change here on this forum in particular if there was one, obviously I try to avoid anything that returns a bad or missing img/link

Affected my previous links as well. Might never know if Imgur decides to pull another fast one.

That's a piece of great news. I had almost 30+ charts and I used Imgur to post them on the forum. They weren't loading making the whole thread useless.
Glad they fixed it and decided to go with our community. Meanwhile talkimg was made and I think we should continue to use that, it's developed by our own forum member.

I think you're missing latest news - images from Imgur isn't shown again. Just look at topic that you made and you'll see Bitcointalk image proxy in place of your images again.
So, now it would best to reupload your images to TalkImg. Even if imgur issue will be solved, they're not reliable anymore.
