Title: Apart from "OP" any other slag every beginner needs to know?
Post by: Agbamoni on June 18, 2023, 11:54:08 AM
Today in the forum, I came across a thread discussing the abbreviation "OP." I was delighted to learn its meaning and felt that there must be more slang terms for newcomers to become familiar with in the forum. The last post I found about abbreviations was in the Filipino language back in 2017. I kindly request anyone here to share some slang terms with me as I believe they would be helpful not only to me but also to other newbies.

OP is an interesting one. Many years ago, I thought it meant 'opening post', so I was confused why most people referred to the thread starter as OP. It made no sense to me until I realized that OP is 'original poster'.
Cantsay shared good resources for crypto terminology. If you want one for general slang that is used on internet forums, you can take a look at noSlang.com (https://www.noslang.com/dictionary/).

You just created an account a few hours before the time of your post, and you have already explored the forum and found out the meaning of OP in a post far back in 2017. I'm just curious how fast you are learning and moving around the forum.

Anyways, thanks for this thread. I have learned a few more things that I did not know about a few slogans that I see and ignore on the forum because I do not actually know what they mean.

I'm pleased to hear that this thread has been helpful not only to newbies because that was the sole aim but also to more experienced members, even when i am still in the process of learning the platform's rules and understanding certain terminologies. It's great to see the positive impact it has had on various individuals across different ranks here.

Well mate it sounds suspicious that's certain but we still need to also give the OP the benefits of the doubt and also it's possible to actually have been doing your research or you may have also been seeing things happening on the forum without registering.

The forum is open to those who aren't registered their limitations is that they can't write but they can watch, this is a possible case for the OP.

All things been equal it is possible that it could be a coincidence he had to cross path with such post and maybe, just maybe that post could have been what inspired OP to create this post about more other slangs he might be missing which may be helpful to him in the future while still in the forum.

Let's allow  him breathe mate  ;D , at least for now.

OP your request is not that bad because members have suggested to you many links already to how you can get more slangs threads, but as a newbie to the forum, i must tell you the truth which i don't see the need for you to learn about the slangs used on the forum first when there are alot of things that were expected of you to do first when you join the forum and i will list them for you now in case you don't know.

1. Read the forum's rules and regulations
2. Learn about the forum's moderation policy
3. Read the way you're expected to make a quality post
4. Learn from what other members were posting on each boards
5. Make use of the forum search engine and aks questions when necessary on beginners and help.
6. You havebto learn about bitcoin and the forum as well, though i don't know your purpose of coming here.

Both are right, Op = original post(er).

Well you should obviously know BTC - Bitcoin :)

And then there's:

LN - Lightning Network
POW - Proof of Work
POS - Proof of Stake
DCA - dollar-cost averaging (when you buy a fixed amount of Bitcoin every month)
DT - Default Trust (Default Trust 1, Default Trust 2, etc.)

I don't think there's anything else terribly more important, most of the other acronyms are standard internet chat slang. So nothing you need to fret about if you've used message boards in the past 15 years.

Here are some others

ASIC - Application Specific Integrated Circuit - used to build mining rigs
HODL - Hold on for dear life - don't spend your Bitcoins
ICO - Initial Coin Offering
P2P - Peer to peer money transfer

There are loads more - remember, Google is your friend.

It's very interesting to know about Crypto Slangs. Knowing about the most used crypto slangs is a must. Already Cantsay shared some best resources to learn a lot about crypto slangs.

Here are some for you which should be known also :

AMA- Ask Me Anything
IEO - Initial Exchange Offering
NFT - Non Fungible Token
NFA - Not Financial Advise

ICO - Initial Coin Offering
I agree that it's worth knowing what an ICO is but only to be able to go around it or run from it if needed. There have been so many unsuccessful ones throughout crypto history that they are almost synonymous to scams. I don't know how popular the term is nowadays. We have seen some other names being thrown around like IEO, STO, IDO, etc. Instead of the old Coin Offerings, they now refer to them as Security Offerings or Decentralized Exchange Offerings, and so forth.

You have various crypto glossary terms that are used in this space so check them out and they can be used anywhere according to your post on the forum like few of them are :

BIP - Bitcoin Improvement Proposal
Shitcoins - Refference to most altcoins which have no utility
KYC - Know your customer

You just created an account a few hours before the time of your post, and you have already explored the forum and found out the meaning of OP in a post far back in 2017. I'm just curious how fast you are learning and moving around the forum.
He might be having an old account here or have explored the forum as some newly registered members have curiosity to check out some threads but I doubt that because he came across an old thread back in 2017 which means he must have seen it back then otherwise it would not have bumped up recently or maybe checked it without registration at that time.

Anyways, thanks for this thread. I have learned a few more things that I did not know about a few slogans that I see and ignore on the forum because I do not actually know what they mean
In past I was also not aware about so many terms but with time and more exposure to these terms used in market and on forum I came to know about them while we develop new one's with time.

When you are learning something new, there are always new terminologies and slangs that are exclusive to people in that community and mostly used by them. You cannot claim to know about Cryptocurrency very well and then not be familiar with the slangs and terms used by people who are into Cryptocurrency. To show expertise, these slangs are used during deep conversations and as a user of Cryptocurrency, you can get lost if you do not know the meaning of some of these slangs when used. I did not know many of them, but I am glad that you brought up this discussion, so other people like myself can learn from this topic, thank you.

I could remember I had to do something of that nature here for newbies and those who have no idea what some acronyms stands for.

You must have been delighted to learn its meanings as it apparently refers to both the poster and the post.

Anyway, I'm not sure how many more Bitcoin or crypto slangs that are peculiar to this forum. I don't know where the slangs lambo, rekt, and others originated, but we used to have hodl here. But then it gradually became a slang in the entire crypto community.

Perhaps we still have sig camp here which refers to signature campaign, or perhaps BCT in short for Bitcointalk. There must be other slangs unique to this forum.
