Hi there,

For the last years, I've been organizing this little contest. First in the french section, now here since 2022.
The idea is to make a small fictitious portfolio on January 1st 2024 and to see on December 31 2024 who has performed the best.
Suppose that you have 1000$ and you want to make a small portfolio with 4 altcoins. Which ones do you choose and in what proportion ?

Restrictions :
You can not take BTC (or wrapped BTC etc...).
You are not allowed to put more than 50% of your portfolio in one altcoin.
You must put at least 5% of your portfolio in each altcoin.
You can only take one stable coin (or none).
Take at least one altcoin beyond the 100th position on Coingecko (https://www.coingecko.com/).
Warning : before choosing an alt, check that on Coingecko, there is a tab Historical data (ex : Bitcoin (https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bitcoin/historical_data#panel)). If on 01/01/2024, there is no price for your token, it is like playing with 3 Alts.

Explanation :
As the reference "buy" price, I will take the opening price reported by Coingecko in the historical data of 01/01/2024.
And the closing price of 31/12/2024 will be used as reference "sale" price.
The one who will see his or her fictitious portfolio progress the most in terms of value will be declared the big winner.
Whoever bets on the best performing altcoin at the end of 2024 will receive a 100$ bonus on the value of his final portfolio.
Whoever bets on the lowest performing altcoin at the end of 2024 will receive a 100$ penalty on the value of his final portfolio.

Who can participate ?
Anyone as long as you have reached the Member rank.
You must have received 5 merits between the last 120 days and just before this post.
You must not have any legitimate negative feedback from a DT member (I will decide whether or not a feedback is legitimate).
No multi-accounts, thank you.
Registration end date: 30/12/2023 11:59pm (Paris time). Registration is now closed.

There will be 3 winners :
1st : 0.0025 BTC + 0.004 BTC ^*
2nd : 0.0010 BTC + 0.002 BTC ^*
3rd : 0.0005 BTC + 0.001 BTC <sup>*

Please note that if by luck (or misfortune, it depends :)), I'am on the podium, the rewards will not be shifted and the 4th will receive nothing.
Once the contest is over and the ranking is clear (I'll give you a few days to check if everything is OK, I can make mistakes), winners will be contacted by PM to ask for their BTC addresses and I'll send them their rewards. If there is no answer from a winner within 7 days, I will contact the 4th, then the 5th, etc... Rewards will be sent at the same time. Of course, your account should not be banned at the end of the contest. This contest lasts one year, be aware of this.

The aim of this contest is to have a little fun (and to confirm that daddy BTC is still strong). The rewards are just there to spice things up a bit, like a bet between friends. In previous years, some people have added extra rewards. I'm not asking for anything, but if someone wants to make the rewards bigger, he is free to do so. But let's be clear: he's committed to pay the winners, otherwise his Trust page is likely to get colored. Under no circumstances I will claim the extra rewards, as I don't want to be responsible for other people's money (I could be hacked or hit by a bus tomorrow, etc...).

Two years ago (2022), I won by picking stable coins before the bear market hit. Now, with the Bitcoin halving next year, I'm not going to do that.

This year (2023), I started with this:

1. For 2024, I have high hopes for privacy coin Monero now that theymos is going to ban advertising mixers (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5476162.0), so that's my first and largest pick.

2. I still have hopes for this:
So I'll add Doge again.

3. My third pick is going to be Stellar Lumens, because it also seems to bubble up every 4-ish years. Although extrapolating the graph (https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/stellar/), that's going to happen in 2025. In that case I'll just add it again the year after.

4. That leaves the shittiest of all shitcoins, down even further than the Top 100. I'll just pick #101, which I've never seen before.

Here're my choices for 2024:

Monero because I find it a very useful coin and it's been a very stable store of value.
Ripple because I think with ETFs becoming more mainstream and Ripple's marketing strategy, more brick and mortar banks may actually start using it for what it's intended.
Dogecoin because I still think it's likely to be incorporated into X/Twitter which I imagine would cause it to pump.
Ronin because it's ranked below 100, it seems to have done well last year, I'm alt-coin illiterate, and I like the name.

Moreover, if this thread is moved to the “Speculation” section, as a result it will become a discussion thread, then another 10 mBTC will be added to the prize pool (this can be done since after January 1 no one will publish their predictions anymore). You are OP. And this has nothing to do with changing the rules (and this is absolutely not comparable with what happened in the last competition).

There are 52 weeks in a year, and a few weeks won't change anything. Secondly, you should understand why I’m asking... any sponsor giving sponsorship money expects that the thread with the brand name will catch the eyes of users as often as possible. But when 20 people participate in the competition, 5 of whom are likely to discuss their predictions, then the number of comments in the thread will be insignificant, as a result the thread will not appear too often in the eyes of users.

Therefore, when I talked about extending the competition, I meant that we would be able to get more participants who would one way or another leave comments in this thread (which is what the sponsor is actually interested in).

My friend, I have a full set of military uniform in my garage, including body armor, etc. (no joke). So I would prefer that the sponsorship money be kept by you, since I have no idea what will happen to me in a year.

If you are comfortable with such uncertainty, then I don’t mind keeping the sponsorship money with me.

@Halab: How about adding a few random entries? Pick a number between 1 and 5000, get the coin. Pick a number between 1 and 50, get the percentage. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the random entries get really high, and some get really low in the final results.

Lol, that's a great suggestion.  It's not like my picks were any less random than this suggestion.  To make it more reflective of our own selections, pick three random numbers from 1 to 100, then another from 101 to 5000 to select the coins.

Ok for fun, I made a random portfolio, but balanced.
I took 2 alts between 1 and 100. And 2 alts between 101 and 3922 (CG doesn't go any further in the ranking). And I put 25% in each alt.

While looking through other user's portfolios to see if anybody was performing worse than me I came across a mistake with @God bless u's ROSE holdings. Its price hasn't dropped significantly in the past day for it to only be 0.4% of his portfolio. $200 of Oasis Network (ROSE) would have been 1,453.741931732 ROSE at the opening price of $0.137576 on January 1.

I've setup my scraper based on Halab's data (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5476151.msg63250846#msg63250846). There's already a huge profit and losses. I didn't verify the data, and did a lot of manual copying. So please check your own data for any mistakes.


I think this is the last year I update my scraper. Coingecko is annoying to deal with, it's blocking more and more scraping, and uses different API names for some of the coins than it uses on it's website. It was a lot more work than I expected. I've also mutilated 2 usernames: no "space" and no "dots".

The first file has a fixed order, csv2.txt is sorted by final balance (the last user was manually edited, this will be fixed in the next update). That makes the legend much easier to read.

Last night, my data scraping resulted in some failures again. The API is clearly not up for it, and I don't really want to keep checking this daily for the rest of the year. If it keeps failing, I'll have to give up.
I'm re-scraping it now.

I just noticed and re-ran my scripts manually, too. How about running them a few times e.g. at 00:00, 01:00, 02:00? Or did none of the runs go through smoothly & you had to 'stitch' results manually? In that case we'd have to look into a different API.

Might find some time to do that myself, too, in case you're too busy at the moment. :)

I ran the whole script again. Sometimes the API just blocks me, despite having a 16 seconds delay between scraping.

How about running it multiple times until none of the returned $ values are 0? I guess it's not that important for the daily standings / graphics whether it's the 00:00 standing or 01:00, since what really counts will only be the final results, right.

That's easy to add indeed. I've changed it like this: 6 seconds between API-requests, but if the API gives me an empty output, I'll wait 1 minute and try again. Let's see if this works tomorrow.

The graphs have been very interesting to watch since the beginning, volatility is extreme at the moment!
I find it extremely funny to see BTC first.  :D

I like how in the first few days, everything was kind of doing the same thing, but between January 4 and 8, all the altcoin portfolios dipped down, meanwhile Bitcoin slowly went up. It's a tiny data point in the grand scheme of things, but it's a nice anecdote to show the difference between Bitcoin and 'everything else'.

Almost 1 month passed and just 10 portfolios are outperforming Bitcoin. I see this as an absolute win! ;) Still good to see that LoyceV's and my portfolio, heavy on XMR, are holding up not too badly. I hope to see Monero gain some traction in the future; even though not necessarily as an investment.

Nice to see that my cat shitcoins are pushing me towards victory.

I actually have a decent amount of this coin that I've been holding since early 2022. The flat has been going on for more than 700 days, and only recently have positive changes appeared. In 2021, the peak value was about $200 (with a circulation three times less than today’s). But I’m not greedy at all, and without hesitation I’ll sell everything I have at a price of 15 dollars (the mark seems quite achievable).

Those who have taken everything except privacy coins are pretty much in the green :D

I put 40% of my ducats into XMR, so yeah...  In USD value it didn't drop much, but with BTC surging it sure looks like it's performing poorly.  I've noticed that's a pattern with XMR, however; When Bitcoin is climbing XMR will drop, and when Bitcoin is dropping XMR will climb.  It makes perfect sense if you consider those who are using it for privacy will want to wash their BTC gains.


Good question.  I guess it's popular enough with the "cryptocurrency" crowd that it will follow along with Bitcoin's lead.  I'm pleased to see XRP is climbing too.  I'm still holding a small IRL bag that's in the red, but it's getting close to matching my USD investment at this point.

This applies to many altcoins. And the tricky part is it may even look like altcoins are gaining against Bitcoin when Bitcoin's market cap drops, but that's ignoring the share of stable coins and brand new hyped altcoins. Coinmarketcap.com used to show a graph of the altcoin against both USD and Bitcoin, but nowadays the default is only USD. That makes the long-term drop against Bitoin less obvious.

I think the winner will be the guy who picks the right memecoin and the right AI coin.  Memecoins always out perform the whole market in small spurts during the start or the end of a major BTC move...  Sometimes both.  And 'AI on blockchain' is a big narrative coming as the bull run develops.

cryptofrka chose well with a couple of memecoins that's dominating in Base, an AI coin that isn't even close its all time high yet and he picked SEI...  An L1 that's playing with the best big narrative in 'parallel EVM and pipelining'.  That narrative will be huge on 2025 with the release of Monad. 

Indeed, I think that 15 or 20 usd is not difficult to imagine in the (not so far) future for FIL. I think you are right to be confident if such prices allow you to be in the green.
It's already touched 10 (despite a small drop today).

With memecoins in this competition it's all about how they'll perform when you need them to.
They'll underperform in most cases and then have crazy runs, if you get lucky with the timing you'll be out of anybody's reach.

I do believe that TOSHI and MOCHI will have monster runs in this bull run and have also invested some money in both of them.

I was expecting to see much bigger movements in altcoins with a new BTC ATH.

Bitcoin dominance (https://coinmarketcap.com/charts/) is slowly increasing, while new altcoins are continuously being created. So I'd expect Bitcoin to do better than the average altcoin.

CX had a contract exploit so they migrated to a new contract with equivalent MCAP which got airdropped to all holders, coingecko should update to the new version soon, the previous exploited token is now worthless.

Black was a project initiated by official Stark team members, they mysteriously abandoned it, it happens but Stark team in general lost a lot of credibility with the greater crypto community.

The other 2 are purely community and meme driven love projects, will play out through the year...

You should have seen all the 'what an idiot' looks I got when my non-investment friends asked me what to invest in and I told them cat tokens on Base. ;D ;D

^  Lol and it helps that they're in Base.  Seems like the rotation is now from Solana going to Base.  Does that mean there's gonna be a BASE token airdrop?  Are airdrop farmers smelling something..?  I'm not really sure but I think Base has no choice but to issue one.

And one thing I've noticed lately is that these memecoins are a leading indicator on which chain the money rotates to next. 

They were initially saying that there won't be a token.
They have to be extra careful considering that they are a registered company in the USA - and issuing tokens is a tricky thing.

I see memecoins more and more as the bullish/bearish community indicator. The bigger ones of course - the lowcaps will constantly keep popping up somewhere.

^  Yeah, Arbitrum said the same thing too.  Yet here we are.  And here's some alpha that I've learned from hunting all these airdrops...  When their docs say that they eventually want to 'decentralize' their chain, protocol, project or whatever, that usually means they're going to issue a token and later have some sort of staking or governance structure.

And Coinbase could always set up an autonomous foundation based in some country that's crypto friendly to be overseer of the chain's development.  So be on the look out for that.  If they really do set it up then most likely there'll be an airdrop.

TIA does seem to be declining in price because the activity is not so pleasant lately some people are securing their money, for GROK itself in my view is the same as yours but for TAO it is still possible to get a very good position in the market considering the categories in TAO AI & Big, Distributed Data, Computing, Oracles, still have the possibility of getting hype again before the end of the year.

APTOS on the other hand has seen a very significant drop, which I think is normal after the recent market crash.

Next time, learning from Vispilio I am gonna pick absurd coins, never seen before, there is no point in picking coins that are already somewhat popular, your portfolio will do same as others and you won't win that way.

Sure there is high chance it might not work out too as in case of BLACK, NOLA, CX, and we are yet to see how SPX will be by end of year too but anyhow riding such coins is more fun.

SPX6900 started to become popular last year together with ticker $BITCOIN.  It was right after when PEPE's initial pump started to die down.  The newer memes at that time, SPX6900 and $BITCOIN, started to up the ante and were going for a more schizo style theme which a lot of people saw as something fresh.  When that started to die down, the Solana memes started to take over. 

I didn't expect SPX6900 to rise as high as where it is rn.  I expected ticker $BITCOIN to do it.

One thing I wish LoyceV would include in his daily data is the percentage that was originally "invested."  It would be convenient to see how the original proportions evolve over the course of the year.  For example, it's interesting to see Vispilio's 30% "invested" in spx has grown 6985.9% (which is more than it's namesake,) and is now 99.7% of his portfolio, while the other 70% "invested" has lost 90.7% of it's value.

I'm the worst shitcoiner out there.... :( :( :( I'll let you in on a little story: I had some Dogecoins left, and decided to get rid of them. I sold them on October 28. Doge went up 3x in the 2 weeks after that. This is why I gave up on trading a long time ago!

Just shows that even in crazy bull markets you really need to be careful. I was quite surprised to see Celestia, Matic, ETH L2's (Arbitrum, Optimism) losing 50% or more value.
Also - this just shows that the proper bull market is still ahead of us.

Made my picks yesterday and feeling really good about them...  ;D  But yeah, are we gonna continue using this thread for the next 2025 one.  So excited!  I picked everything from the Hyperliquid eco...  I'm gonna win this one!  :D

But yeah, if those ones lose money then that means I lose money irl.  :D :D  Those are my bags but the distribution is different.  I got more than 50% in HYPE and staked them in Hyperliquid.

Last few weeks were very heavy in trading, I didn't get a chance to do a deep dive and isolate 4 picks for that thread...

Fartcoin rose rapidly through Tiktok engagements, and is now catching another wave because Trump's latest moves are heavily favoring Solana and US based blockchains (eg Base), there are better candidates on Solana though that recently got liquidity sucked out of them because of sudden arrival of Trump tokens...

Retar Dio (NFA, I just like this cult's sign off and vibes 🦁, and I expect cult building meme coins to perform very well again in 2025).

^  Yeah, both Fartcoin and Retardio both have a solid cult following behind them...  But their PA don't really looking good right now, esp Retardio which looks like it's down more than 70% from the highs.  I don't I could hold such a sht price action.  Lol. 

For Fartcoin there's some hope of a bounce..  But still, I don't know.  It could be a time to start buying the lows tho.  Start slowly to build the position then add limit order on the way up to catch dips.
