Title: Ethernet controlled power surge? or how to restart crashed rig from miles away?
Post by: dyce on December 16, 2011, 11:35:28 AM
Can anyone recommend me something that could do this? a power surge with a web interface is what i am looking for. or something that from anywhere with internet i could restart my mining rig that crashed. I suppose a script that restarts the computer every 24 hours might work too but a power surge with web interface would be pretty convenient.

i was looking at this but it looks like it wont work. but I am guessing some sort of PDU? anyhow please recommend me something cheap hopefully no more than 100, also somewhat portable, I dont need a rackmount one.

dont think this is it though..

Yeah I think those dataprobe single outlet units are about as cheap as it gets.  Bad news is even they aren't that cheap.

If you want a PDU you need a "SWITCHED" PDU.  Generally PDU are more expensive but cheaper per drop (outlet).

Yeah.  I remember looking heavily into this for a while until I got all of my miners stable.  Every once in a while the power flickers a bit and I'll lose a miner or two.  It'd be convenient to be able to reboot them remotely, but it just doesn't happen enough anymore to justify it (for me).

When Bitcoin was in the bubble and mining was absurdly profitable, I was looking at using some relays from controlanything(.com) and wiring the relays to my power outlets.  PDUs are *way* too expensive and you can only put a miner or two on one (since most are only meant for a single 15 or 20 amp input).  Some of their relay PCBs are expandable also (if you're running a mining farm and plan to keep expanding).

They do make 240V 30A PDU.   ;D  Thats a good 5.7KW.  You could run 18+ 5970s.  :)   Sadly it isn't worth the investment though.  While it may take a while the writing is on the wall.  FGPA will completely replace GPU in time.  If I thought GPU mining was going to be around for 2-3 years I might consider it.

Haha.  Yeah.  I'm currently running 12,436 watts of mining rigs though (and I'm still expanding).  I'd need 3.  :D  Cost effective just went out the window.
