Title: Head up for newbies
Post by: Troytech on January 18, 2024, 11:02:26 AM
If your a newbie I guess your weren't aware of this thread that came out around August last year
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5464606.0

Merit farming in the WO thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178336.new#new) has gotten way out of hand.

The typical merit farmer post is a copy/pasted tweet from a large bitcoin-focused Twitter account, complete with picture and (often in smaller text) the word "source" with a link to the tweet. These accounts are literally just taking popular tweets and pasting them in WO for no other reason than to get merits. You'll see them on just about every single page of the thread this year.

Although It seems a Post created based on pure assumption, I just wanted to give newbies a heads up about the kind of post accepted here, I've not heard any news on any major forum rules changes based on this. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up .

That thread is about disable merit distribution from JJG in Wall Observer thread and if further, all merit distribution in that thread. No point to restrict newbies to post in Wall Observer.

You even don't have to make your head up because if posters actively join that thread, they will recognize if something changed. Additionally, the discussion is in Meta and you can keep it goes there rather than fork and bring it to Beginners & Help.

Snip

Maybe if you wanted to make your own contributions to newbies on what to do and how they should post, then you can go about this in giving them the best recommendation for that.

I don't expect any serious minded newbie to begin the forum posting on wall observer if not for the benefits of getting merits, there's nothing that could help improve a member or newbie to being a quality poster than from the guides above, this are the standard format expected, members should know this and newbies should learn from what is expected of them and not while try to make posts.

I don't know why this kind of issues keep popping up but, if you wish to impact or advise newbies I guess you should start with yourself first.

That thread is open and you can comment there than create a new thread trying to let newbies know what you really need to know. Now it's as if you're get criticism in your post yeah that's what it is but, I do say this alot you can't give what you don't have and trying to do so will end up in this criticism of your post.

What I advise you now is before you make a post (create a thread) go and do some little research know if the post is what it, you know somethings are better left the way there are. So if you feel the forum can go without the thread you wish to created then let it be or if it's not too impactful then just let go.

Just a friendly advise from your fellow newbie

Seriously!

Wall Observer is a Megaspam thread so basically in that thread, you will be overwhelming with many posts which are either shit posts or very insightful posts.

I totally disagree with you if you think there are nothing to learn from posts in Wall Observer. By saying so, you are missing important points and you either need more experience or just short sighted.

You are also a newbie, so the advice is not entirely appropriate, given the experience of your presence here.
But if we talk about the fact that you are warning newcomers specifically, then you can guess there is no newcomer there. All the people present, the old-timers who post in the WO threads, and others whom you see with a low rank, can be called merit hunters who have found an easy way to increase in rank. But these are not beginners, believe me.
Suppose you have carefully read the latest discussion posts. In that case, you will understand what we are talking about and how one user is trying to prevent the influx of alternative accounts from publishing posts there.

@OP don't dodge the fact you're also want to farm merit, that's why you creating many topics in this section, you're just use a different way. There's nothing wrong to earn merit, yeah I know that and I'm not discuss about that. What I'm trying to say is, don't act like you're the most correct/right person when you're did a same thing.

To me what I understand mostly here is that it's very easy for Newbies to come instructs their fellow beginners over but I also observed that most newbies doesn't settle down to read any longer. I know it's not easy to read everything but you must find time to read otherwise you won't or they won't last here and, talking about that WO just the second poster said it was solely for JJG and I don't see any reason to limit him because he doesn't distributes much volumes rather just 1 or 2 at minimum except he is he is spending much than that but I still don't see any reason to question anyone on how they spend their sMerits or not.

...Just wanted to give everyone a heads up .
I'm not sure you succeeded in giving "a heads up ." that you outlined as you didn't conclude what your point was there. You just left it on the middle, inconclusively. Again, you can't base a warning on assumption of what you thought happened. Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with people sharing other people's posts, whether for merit or for lessons, provided they include source links to them. I posted in WO a couple of times in the past. My only problem there is the constant ceaseless spam posts that go on there.

I read this thread in the evening before coming to B&H section where many were opposing JJG well JJG is the good asset for the forum i myself have learn many thing from him in the buy and hodl thread and now i come here i also mentioning the same thread again here well in my honest opinion Yes many go there just for sake of getting merits from their little accounts. News should stop posting in the place of OG's and if they have good info to share there then there will be no problem for anyone.
