Title: Bitcoin vrs Litecoin minning
Post by: armova on March 29, 2014, 04:35:53 PM
When using calculators like this: https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/calculator, seems like, with the actual parameters, there is no short/middle term profitability in Bitcoin minning, even using powerfull 2-3TH machines, the next logic step is to try with litecoins using the new 250MHs machines comming soon to the market.

Do you see any major threats in the near future regarding the Litecoin minning with powerfull machines? Is there any other better minning approach for an investment around $10k?

Thanks for any insight you might share!

Is the same hardware used for mining both coins?

No.  KNC does not appear to have plans to make a dual-miner.

Atm, there seems to exist a decent Bitcoin ASIC, a combination of low cost, not too high risk, entry level with possible ROI and geeky fun. It is the Antminer S1 https://www.bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=00020140107162747992Ce5uBuxW06D6

That's $430 (0.893 BTC) and uses 350W for 180 Gh/s, can be overclocked to 200 Gh/s

How to provide power and operate the device, I haven't learned yet... It requires at least a 450W ATX PSU, PCI-e cables that have to be cut, etc...

Going off of the above and continuing: The new Antminers are out and are 2.0gh without overclock.  They only cost 33$ in the US so eat your heart out or wait for Scrypt Asics to progress a bit and even out in price. Right now is a bit of a transition point for Scrypt so I would hold off for a while on getting into the game or you could find yourself paying more for less  ;)
