Title: Where to sell Casascius coins?
Post by: SgtSpike on March 09, 2024, 08:18:09 AM
Just curious if there's any good way to sell Casascius coins these days.  I've seen a few sold at auction houses.  A few years back there used to be a website for someone acting as a broker/cosigner, but I don't remember what the website was called and can't seem to find it anymore.  Seems there's at least one loaded one listed on eBay right now, but I know they're generally cancelled on that platform.  Any other ideas?

Try checking this out 4k.com.
Even though the steps seem a bit complicated from conventional marketplaces, there is one casascius collector with good experience with this site: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5366886
Do it if you're sure that NFTs aren't shit stuff, lol.

Btw, perhaps you forgot that this forum has Collectibles board.

one of the best place where you can sell quickly a coin is here on forum
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0
of course it's better you use an escrow as "protection" for the trade and follow suggestion for the best selling thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5277761.0

I have seen some decent trades even in ebay or catawiki (of course the "final result" it depends where you are based, some countries or platform have a lot of traffic)
there are even auction house that can help you by selling your coin like https://stacksbowers.com/

Did the OP miss out on our vibrant community over at the "Collectibles" section? I may have come across many Casascius coins auctions running there from time to time. I dont regular that section but it is pretty active and filled with the OG coin collectors of this forum.

Rather than going to eBay, you can set up a trade here with an escrow with minimal fees.

I would recommend against using 4k.com
They have had good "experiences" because they own the website.
They make you pay in Ethereum and tack on a hefty premium.
Then not only do you not get the coin, they send you a shiny NFT to hold onto.
Seem perfectly normal to me......  :P

The main issue now on buying online a cas coin is the shipping process most importantly if the seller and buyer are both from different country. It’s very hard to entrust cas coin loaded with 69K$ which the value is not declared on the shipping company since it’s mark as collectible only.

I preferred selling the coin IRL rather than entrust it to a courier which we don’t if they will deliver the item safely.

@minerjones, do you still manage to ship successfully loaded casascius coin with the current value of Bitcoin?

Agreed, IRL transfers are preferred due to the current value.
Logistically speaking, shipping a coin of this value no longer makes sense... no insurance will cover the digital value nor would I want to have to declare that amount on a customs form.

The escrow could act as the courier if needed :D

I do still have people who want to ship the coin due to location, but am recommending at this point to either peel and redeem the coin or wait for an opportunity to do an in-person transfer

Thanks for providing a bright spot,
yeah I don't really recommend that either because it seems too easy to be true. It's just that from several threads I found recently (and I hope those aren't a secret attempt to build the visibility of a collectibles market), these cascasius collectors have run out of ideas for selling.

Stacks and Bowers auction house in New York has been a great addition to the community as of recent.
They took a chance to auction off some of these coins about 2 years ago and now are the top sellers that provide an alternative method for sellers and buyers to sell and buy off of this foum
