Title: Mining cost pass the exchange rate
Post by: johnyj on March 30, 2014, 01:29:57 AM
Take Antminer S2 for example, 1000w and 1TH, $3900, at 20% difficulty increase, it can mine maximum 5 coins during its life time, means each coin cost at least $780, electricity cost excluded

Although the current exchange rate is far below it, all those mining rigs were wiped out immediately after announcement  ;)

I anticipate that there will be a large scale sell off for 1/2 generation ASICs soon and those who live in north might purchase them to warm their garage. And who sold their rigs will use those money to purchase coins

Fair enough. I think that there will be some interesting exchange between the viability of continuing to mine and operational costs.

It kinda feels like something has to give and the sell off might force it in one direction or the other. (I'm not sure if everyone will necessarily buy BTC with the sell off though.)

im in canada
i use my gpu to mine and to heat my 1000 sq feet apt, i turn off all my other heat sources
lucky for me i have active insulation
that means upstairs, below, left and right of my apartment is heated by neighbors, giving me heat during winter
without heat my apt would normally be about 10deg celcius if it is -5 outside
i run about 500 watts constantly and throw on a jacket in the colder nights
