Title: I don't want people sending me unsolicited private messages.
Post by: JusticeSolus on June 07, 2024, 08:21:37 PM
Is there a way to toggle my direct messages to an on/off state?

On discord, you can set it so the person trying to message you won't even get the message through given certain set parameters such as if they are added as a friend or not, share a mutual server, etc. That way, the person has to at least send you a friend request if they want to msg you on discord.  It's a nice system they have.

That way when someone views my profile, the option to message me isn't there to begin with.

This could also help new users who just arrive and try to message any random person with high trust, high merit, high activity, etc. they think will save their finance life or some other bullshit no one wants to see in their DM's.

Thanks.

By default, you can't receive PMs from Newbie accounts. You need to opt-in for that.

Newbie PM opt-in (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2728840.0)

In response to the annoying PM spam, you now have to opt into receiving PMs from newbies. The option is in your PM preferences (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;sa=pmprefs). You also can't send PMs to newbies if you haven't opted in. Copper members are exempt, but only if you're wearing the copper membership.

You should opt into receiving newbie PMs if you post offers in the marketplace, if you like answering newbie questions, if you're a moderator, etc.

To start with, if you sent a PM to a newbie in the last 30 days, you're already "opted in".

I don't think I have ever received spam PMs on this forum, to be honest.

1.) Yeah but what if someone just wanted to grind a bunch of acc's that just become non-newbie, then sell them to people so they can spam on the forum/to peoples DM's.
2.) I mean, people are out here making GPT posts so they can get hero, member, etc so they can do nefarious things. Whose to say people can't just make and sell fresh accounts that can send DM's to others?
3.) People are account selling/buying in general, so anyone can be anyone.

4.) That's good you haven't received spam.  I guess they don't wanna Try that Ninja lol.

Edit: updated with quote

Do newbies send unsolicited messages to newbies like themselves? What for? ...and if not, what's the reason why anyone should be bothered?

I haven't received any serious unsolicited PMS for atleast 2 years and, I can call that ENOUGH experience for anyone to learn from.
On the other hand, you don't really have to read everything you see.... I only got messaged ones by a snr member; "He asked if I could dish out merits to his accounts and get a refund by the next day"  That, infact was one of weirdest things I ever came across.
Edit:You could restrict PMS from a particular user that seems to be irresistible at whatever dog business they wanna indulge you in.

Op from the bolded part of the comment supposed to be in a quote and I believed it is a mistake you have done so please edit your comment and insert it in the TryNinja quote if not people will tag you for plagiarism and that is not good. I know you don't know and since I have told you, you can edit your comment now. And place that comment of TryNinja I his quote. And s for the question, he has told you how the pm system works. When I came first in the forum, I was not able to send message to people but when I rank up, I was able to pm people. And another thing you can block users from sending you private messages. And I also experienced that from another user.

You are newbie and you want to have extension to filter forum members and find high trust, rank, merit, activity points as destinations for your PMs. I don't actually understand your post and demand here. By reading your post, I guess that you don't want to receive unsolicited PMs from newbies but this meaning does not make sense, in this context because you are a newbie.

This makes me to turn to another guess, that you want to send unsolicited PMs to other forum members. Is it what you want to do with PMs?

Receivers of unsolicited PMs can report your account and your account can be banned.
29. Sending unsolicited PMs, including but not limited to advertising and flood, is not allowed.

I don't think that the forum doesn't have the same features as Discord but it's definitely a really good thing to consider if there's any plan to add when it comes to features, I mean look at it this way, there's no friend requests here in the forum so that parameter of messaging only those in your friend list doesn't work plus this is a forum after all, what works in Discord will possibly not work here. If you don't want to get unsolicited messages, you can just ignore them, if they send you something that you don't want to talk about, it would probably be a good idea if you can just click on the ignore button on that user and you would have your problem solved, I've been in this forum for a long time so I feel like I count as a vouch when I say that there's not a lot of unsolicited PMs that I receive and most of the PMs are important here and it's probably rare that people use it for casual chats.

This is not possible due to the merit system on forum ranks. There’s no way a serial spammer that use GPT will ever gain merit needed to rank up.

Simply posting will not make you rank up on the new rank system. Maybe you are pertaining to previous ranking system which you only need activity in able to rank up by just posting.

In an event that someone will sell merit or circle jerk in this useless account then it’s very easy to spot them.

They can use ChatGPT, AI generative content tools to make their posts in lazy ways and they can rank up but in the end of their journey, they will have account bans.

Using tools to generate contents automatically will not help them to hide plagiarized contents from the community detectives. When these posts are seen, detected and reported, forum moderators and admins will assess reports and consider different bans. Finally, these accounts will be banned permanently.

Deactivate receive PMs from newbie accounts and report any unwanted spam. The cost of spamming will be high for higher ranks, so most of these spam messages come from newbie rank.

With the benefits of you to had said it all, I also don't think it's advisable to restrict users from giving a direct message because you can be at a point of misconduct or missing out somethings which a user who either be a newbie or an older rank can PM you for that.
I was also PM my someone during when I was on a member rank to trade sMerit. It really felt irritating which I Just ignored. I've also made lot of mistakes such ad inappropriate quoting users posts  and inappropriate wearing of signature texts on my campaign which my manager and other users whi were concerned PM me.
If there was no access for those users to PM me, I don't think if I'd had been so updated.

Let's say for whatever reason you do get spam Pms, you can click the report to admin button in the pm. If enough people get the message and report it, the users sending the message could be banned.

It doesn't stop you from getting the message of course, but it does allow you to take some action.

Fixed!  Sorry about that.

I seriously still think PMs should be toggleable on/off.

A huge part of networking when it comes to business is reaching out to someone...sometimes in an unsolicited manner.  Sometimes it's responded to well, sometimes it's not.  One of the ways people learn is about asking questions.  What if a newbie asks the wrong person a question and they are reported for unsolicited PM spam?  That would drive them away instantly from this place.  Therefore, to avoid all that, PMs should be toggleable on/off.

Or make it so your PMs are off but only certain whitelisted people can message you.

I mean, this is the Bitcoin forum we are talking about.  Why is it so behind the times lol?

I believe you are correct. You won't get far with the account, no matter how many AI tools you use to rank up. Accounts using AI last only a short time. The account will be caught and banned in no time.
It is crucial to recognize that our community is acutely aware of AI usage. Even the Natildah brothers, renowned for their AI work on the forum, are not immune. Natilda Bhai, a highly regarded member, consistently strives to make meaningful contributions to the forum. If you look at AI's posts, you will read and flag the report. If there are more problems, your account may be banned.

Thank you.   :D

I had started a poll, but that pmprefs section tip does exactly that.

* = Pm's off and then taking it away = pm's on.

Locking.
