Title: Bitcoin wallets and websites from 2010 to 2015
Post by: Elek17 on August 02, 2024, 01:07:12 PM
I am trying to recover some bitcoin I bought from somewhere in between 2010 and 2015. It was bought on website, possibly with a foreign domain. It was bought because hackers hijacked our server and held it in ransom in exchange for bitcoin. Then we made the payment through western union. They recommended a specific website, but we cannot remember the name. Does anyone know of any websites that were used during that time?
Thanks

BTC-e, Virwox, Mt.gox.. Those were some of the names that were around the early days of bitcoin. I don't believe any of them ever supported Western union though.

Blockchain.info was also a popular wallet around that time, but back then, I don't believe offered any exchange services either.

The timeframe you're giving is also too large, most of the exchanges that exist today started during that period as well (Coinbase, Bitfinex, Kraken, etc.).

If you're hoping you could find the exchange, then I imagine you still have access to your email address? Can you check that to see if you have any emails during that period coming from an exchange? Do you happen to remember how the site looked like? (colors, logo, etc)?

You can try the names I gave you above in google images, to see if that refreshes your memory.

If it was 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2013, there's a good chance you were looking at MtGox (which has gone bankrupt since then and is now in the process of distributing the remaining assets to claimants).

Another popular option back then was localbitcoins (which started blocking some countries and states in 2019 and shut down in 2023).

I had never been around that year only the year 2015 was when I first time heard about Bitcoin they can earn money from claiming free satoshis and invest it in cloud mining and investment sites that was the worst year that I experienced being scammed by cloud mining and investment sites.

Anyway, this one might be helpful we have a Bitcoin wiki with a list of defunct exchanges and companies check the link below you might be familiar with a few of them.
