Title: about back up my Ravencoin wallet with Ledger Nano
Post by: henrythebest on August 27, 2024, 06:17:40 AM
hi there, i have some questions here, I'm using the electrum-ravencoin wallet, i try to use my ledger Nano X hardware wallet to connect it, i have backed up my seed phases safely somewhere else and chosen the BIP39 format. if i delete all the electrum-ravencoin wallet files and folders in my computer (or i try to restore it from another new computer), will i be able to get everything back just by these seed phases? do i need keep the original ledger device(or i could just buy a new one then put the seed phases in?) or do i need backup some electrum-ravencoin wallet files in order to make sure i could restore everything? thanks for your reply.

I'm a bit confused. Where's the ravencoin at? If it's in your ledger then the only thing you need is your ledger seedphrase. If it's in your electrum, you need electrums seedphrase. There is no need for the wallet files.

If the funds are in your ledger, you also shouldn't be using your ledger seedphrase in electrum. Rather connect the device to electrum if possible. Just like you would with electrum bitcoin version.

This is electrum ravnecoin wallet is just the fork of the Normal electrum wallet so basically everything is suppose to be the same, so there for since you have the wallet seed phrase you can basically recover your wallet from it without any problem. Just Make sure it is Bip39 you actually choose as option when recovering.

The seed phrase and the wallet file does almost the same thing in terms of recovery just that the wallet file helps you to recover some datas like when you have an invoice or safe a contact on electrum but the both method have your funds recovered

Yes, your Ledger's BIP39 seed is enough as a backup.

-snip- or do i need backup some electrum-ravencoin wallet files in order to make sure i could restore everything?
This is only necessary if you don't want to go through the process of creating a new wallet on a new machine or when you need to format your PC.
If you want to keep a wallet file backup, just copy the wallet file from Electrum-Ravencoin-equivalent of "electrum/wallets" directory.
Or use: "File->Save backup"

do i need keep the original ledger device(or i could just buy a new one then put the seed phases in?)
It's compatible with any hardware wallet that supports BIP39 seed; same model, different model or from other brands. (check its backup phrase compatibility)
Even software wallets support it as long as it supports BIP39, but that's only an option if you do not have any choice.

Thanks for the replies. i think i will backup the electrum/wallets file too for more caution.

You should be able to restore everything if you delete everything from elecrtum-ravencore, or if you install fresh wallet, except maybe user created labels could be gone from your addresses/transactions, if you didn't create backup for that.

In that case, he can use "Label Sync" plugin which also works in electrum-ravencoin although it's using the same server as Electrum.
Ref: github.com/Electrum-RVN-SIG/electrum-ravencoin/blob/master/electrum/plugins/labels/labels.py#L36 (https://github.com/Electrum-RVN-SIG/electrum-ravencoin/blob/30d405376863fcc1064a18c4e3da5dcd9f959f7b/electrum/plugins/labels/labels.py#L36)

@henrythebest If you want to use the plugin, simply enable it in "Tools->Plugins->LabelSync".
Your labels should be safe and privately stored in the server since it's is encrypted with the hashes of your master public key and the master public key isn't sent to the server as well.
So it has no idea of your labels and xpub key.

I heard about that plugin but I never tried it and I don't like adding additional stuff on top of Electrum wallet (for bitcoin), except maybe for privacy purpose.
Did you use it yourself, and can you confirm everything is working fine?

Yes, I've tried it in Ravencoin and it's working like the Bitcoin counterpart (since it's sending hashes, the server doesn't know if it's an Electrum fork)
And yes, I've been using it in Electrum; it's not something like a third-party addition though since it's officially included in the release binaries and source code.
The "labels server" is even hosted by the official website electrum.org, subdomain: labels.electrum.org.

For privacy concerns, the sever wont have any idea of your master public key and labels since the labels are encrypted and encoded by the client (your wallet);
The master public key is hashed as your "WalletID" to identify that you're the owner of the labels, the raw mpk isn't sent.
It's open-source so you don't have to trust my word, just verify: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/electrum/plugins/labels/labels.py (https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/electrum/plugins/labels/labels.py)

The seed phrase should be enough as your backup unless you have some things you want to backup like labels or gap limits then you need to back up the wallet file to restore all labels and other data to a new device.
However, if there's nothing you have to back up from your Ravencoin Electrum wallet you shouldn't have any problem when restoring your wallet with seed phrase in the future all assets are inside your hardware wallet derived from your seed phrase once you restore it all ravencoin funds should be there.

And in case you start having issues with the Electrum-Ravencoin wallet, Ledger's supported coins website mentions another third party wallet that you can use for RVN. They call it Secure RVN. I have no idea what this is, and Google seems confused as well. The first result links to Trust Wallet. The results further down don't mention this particular wallet at all.
