Merit is a form appreciation for making good points in conversations or it's more like rewards for good contributions.

Make good contributions, help solve problems if possible and stop focusing on the merits it will come when you share good knowledge with others.

Where you should start from is to pay attention to reading the posts of high quality posters. You can easily know them with the merits they have received which is displayed on every of their posts.

As you are learning from them, also be reading from external sources what you can contribute on this forum which can be very help.

The only criteria is to make good quality posts. You will naturally earn merit over time. There are also a few threads where you can submit posts that you’ve written so they can be evaluated by merit sources and they will give you a few merits to help you out if you are just starting on the forum.

It might seem daunting to be able to earn enough merits to reach a high rank, but you will steadily make progress as long as you remain active.

Don't worry about merits, focus on contributing to the forum, or have decent comment or reply to the topics share information, and make informative post, just don't expect that it will be automatic, it will come.

Can you share where did you read it?

In Beginners & Help board, you have everything you need to understand about merit, if you read it. Reading can help you more than creating topics, asking and replying but are not ready for reading.

that you know about the merit system shows you know some details regarding how it works and probably just wants to get people's opinion so you can earn it fast enough. The key thing with Merit is that it's Earned and regardless of the advice you're given by people or the thing you read  about earning merit, if you don't have the quality in you that attracts merit, you will still struggle.

Key thing that helps you know more about the forum and the merit system is for you to DYOR. The search option is often neglected but if you try checking things out, you will easily discover that 80% of the things you're curious to know have been asked by previous newbies and by going through the post, you can easily get more than enough answers to your questions.

Welcome to the forum!

It seems like someone might have already given you some info since you’re already mentioning merits. Typically, a newbie who doesn’t know much about the forum would start by reading the rules and eventually discover that merits are required to join campaigns later on. I’m curious, did someone tell you to sign up and earn merits to start making money? There’s nothing wrong with that, actually. In fact, the people who earn through signature campaigns here (aside from scammers) keep this forum lively and engaging.

Merit is a structure of the forum which differentiate active and good quality posters from spammers, as it is earn through constant participation in forum discussion and provision of solution to problems. Hence, anybody can earn merit, but only just that you just need to have good knowledge about Bitcoin and crypto in general, to be able to engage in forum discussion. However, I will advise you read the official rules of the forum as given below, as plagiarism is highly prohibited, and likewise promotion of referral link and scam websites are prohibited.

Merits are earned through making quality information and reasonable posts and comments.

When you comment or make a post that has the above-mentioned qualities and an OP finds it relatable, they can decide to gift you merits.

In simple terms, Merit is like an upvote you might have seen or reddit or a like you might have seen on Twitter. There are different ranks on this forum and the only possible way to achieve them is through activity (being active on the forum) and merits. To get merits, you need to make content or post something which is appreciated by the community. Then only you can get an upvote aka merit.

The merit system was designed in the year September 17, 2018. The initial plan was to regulate the ranking system due to excessive garbage posting. To do so, only good quality contributors will be given some merit to appreciate them, and having more of the merits determines your rank in the forum. Now there is no perfect or manipulative way to get merit from cyclers or any individual. Just be organic and contribute positively in the forum and you will have people meriting for your words.

Learn more about the History of bitcointalk.org's rank system here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5170032.0#:~:text=Note%20that%20merit%20requirement%20on,implemented%20since%20September%2017%2C%202018.&text=Due%20to%20excessive%20garbage%2Dposting,any%20signature%20or%20personal%20text.)

Criteria? maybe there's nothing like that exist since it depends on people if they want to send their smerits or not.

But this are the things you could do to possibly earn some merits.

Posting quality contents
Helping people to understand some situations they want to know, you need to be helpful since somehow people will send a merit if they appreciate your effort done.
Participating any forum activities.

Those are some option you could try. But much better for you to ignore getting merit first, its so early to think about that. What's better for you is to learn lots of words about crypto since if you know what you are talking about and always have sense in every post you made then huge chance that you can receive merits from other users here.

Ive seen your post not bad either. Be helpful and contribute to meaningful topics. As a newbie its quite hard to earn merits especially when many high ranks think of new users as an alt account gaining some merits.

Merits are like a trophy given to quality posts of users when someone like it or youre helpful. So it will depend on how you interact here.

Well, you joined this forum (Bitcointalk) just yesterday and you already have at least 12 post which means you are interested in the forum. However, getting merits in other to reach your next rank will not be hard for you if you put more efforts together. As a newbie and someone that's new to cryptocurrency, you have to do more reading than posting so that you will gain enough crypto knowledge and to understand the forum before thinking of how to get merits.

Every newbie that comes to the forum and learn about paid campaigns and how they can earn here are always interested to earn merits so they can rank up and earn. The thing is, ranking up is really not easy when you are desperate to earn merits and since you mentioned you don’t know much about how things are done here i think you should focus on learning about the forum do’s and don’t and understand the them better so you don’t end up breaking any rules.

Earning merit shouldn’t be your main priority here merits do come when you make quality contributions so your main concern should be how to make useful contributions that will benefit the members of the forum.

You earn merit when people find your contribution useful to them and to make quality contributions you need to learn about bitcoin and cryptocurrency first so learning should be your first priority.

So my advice to you since is this merits that will lead you to rank up this account and also become like other’s members here, is for you to go through the previous threads that has been posted by some users; so that you can lean more and have some knowledge on how you can create your content to earn merit’s.

You have gotten lots of good advice and recommended post that will make you succeed in the forum. But you should place more emphasis on learning about Bitcoin and the forum. This.will enable you to develop knowledge that will enable you to contribute meaningfully to the forum. Merits are rewards for being productive and helpful in the forum.

So is it like given by other members in on the forum or by very high ranking members

The forum has merits sources whose responsibility is to distribute merits to deserving posts. But you can receive merits from any member that has smerit. You can also give merits to post if you have smerit.

Op, are you being very serious with the question you are asking right now or you are joking? I mean how can you say you don't understand how things are done here at the same time you are saying that you clear about most things what do you really mean? stop beating around the bush just say you want to know how you can earn merit because that's the only thing I think this your post is all about nothing else to be honest.
From what I can see, you understand that you need merit to increase in rank as a newbie but you forget that you need knowledge to know what to do so that you will receive some merit because that which you are only interested in can be easily gotten when you have knowledge which should be your priority for now as a beginner who has zero knowledge on cryptocurrency.
I would advise you to change your narrative about bitcointalk.org because this community is not all about ranks and merits, there are lots of things you could learn from this place and the people here or you truly want to learn about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency, you can also improve in your writing skills and your ways of communication if you follow what is happening here.

This is the best answer I have read so far. It is not important to work hard only to get merit as much as it is important to stay active and use the forum in the normal way, that is, enrich your knowledge by reading topics and for others to benefit from your knowledge and skills by participating in discussions. Merit points will come without a doubt.
I am speaking from personal experience, as although I am an old permanent member and have many posts that have earned and still deserve merit points, once I stop being active for a few months, I stop receiving merit points. After I returned to activity here on the forum two days ago, I was surprised yesterday that one of my posts got three merits, although I was not really expecting that.
Yes, it is the constant activity and useful participation that guarantees getting merit, and that is why upgrading accounts is not based only on merit points, but more importantly on activity as well.

it is given by other members who have sMerits, it doesn't matter if they are high-ranking members or not as long as they have sMerits they can give merits to other members.

also, regarding the "criteria" for recieving merits. it doesn't have any criteria, as long as you post even if it is "low quality" you can recieve merits from others if they decided to give it to you for some reason but you have to realize that posting high quality/helpful posts would most likely get more merits than the "low quality" posts.

That's right, you have to reach a certain amount of merit to be able to rank up on this forum, as you can see in the quote below.

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member301
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
Legendary775-10301000

I'm also a new user on this forum (registered early last year), as far as i have observed, you will get merit for your posts which are rated by other users as useful posts which usually contain important information about the bitcoin ecosystem & several useful posts about the forum. You can read Lauda's thread [1] to understand it better.

OP, firstly, ask yourself why you personally need merits. Why did you come to the forum? You want to increase your rank, but why? In addition, you can say that you are a trader and, as you say, already experienced, which means you have the necessary information. Your communication on the forum will definitely find like-minded people who agree with your posts, and you will definitely get your merits soon. The main thing is "not to go out of your way" so that the goal is to increase your rank and not exchange experience.

But your greeting in the Nigerian section and the statement that people on the forum are very strict made me smile ;D.
Hello everyone I'm happy to be here my experience so far on the platform has been nice I just realised one thing sha the people here are very very strict

People here are different, and people do not like lies. This is radiated in many posts. Therefore, do not rush, and you will definitely get what you want.

Yeah, merit is what one need to rank up in this forum but it's not given anyhow, your post must be informative, I mean something that will help or contribute to the forum. And secondly you shouldn't be looking for merit now because you might get discourage after posting and you don't get any perhaps you should focus more on learning and understanding things you don't know before, only then you can adjust from your way of posting. One thing that will help you in this forum is understanding how this forum works and coming with a pattern that will attract people when I say attract I mean information that will be helpful, valuable etc and don't get yourself worked up because of merit the knowledge you will acquired if you learn will be more than having a merit.

There are different ways to earn merit and one of it is to make a high quality posts or constructive posts that will surely get merited. My advice for you is that you shouldn't focus on merits but then merits will come to you. Let me ask you, what reason why you want to earn merits?. Will merits one of your goals to achieve as a forum member here in bitcointalk?. Merit is indeed important to rank up. Why do you want to rank up?. To be honest, you don't need high rank to contribute to this forum if that's what you are planning.

If your posts are really informative and helpful to the forum, I don’t think you’ll have to spend a long time to get merits and rank up in the forum. If you’re really too focused on whether the merits will come or not, you’ll get discouraged if they don’t come as expected. Allow them to come naturally while you continue to do your own part in contributing and writing good posts in the forum.

Op as long as this Bitcointalk forum is concerned for you to get merits and rank up is very simple but is just depends on your knowledge and understanding because once you are contributing meaningfully in the forum you are going to earn merit from our senior high rank members very easily, because normally in this forum merits is always awarded to a meaningful post that is very helpful to the forum, as and appreciation. However I would advise you do more of reading the high rank members previous thread because doing that is going to help you gather more knowledge and create a better thread that we earn you a enough merits.

There are different ways to earn merit and one of it is to make a high quality posts or constructive posts that will surely get merited.

I'm confused. What are the different ways of earning merits? You could say that a person might get merited if their posts are liked by other members, someone might find them helpful, constructive, or even funny, but this doesn't mean a person should become a joker and keep trying to post funny stuff all around the forum only so that they can make others laugh or smile and earn merits for that. The basic criteria is to be helpful and constructive, and you will earn merits over time.

There is one more thing most newbies don't understand. They believe a constructive or high-quality post is a very big post, has a lot of words or sentences, and covers a lot of space in a thread. That isn't true. A single sentence can also be constructive as long as it serves the purpose.
