Title: Other data in the blockchain?
Post by: IceGuru on March 31, 2014, 09:41:25 AM
I've never been a master at the technical side of bitcoin. I know enough to explain to new people why they should embrace it in political discussions and that's about all.

Recently I learned that other data is stored in the block chain. I got to thinking: What stops someone from putting child porn for example and screwing over many people who would then have a copy stored in their blockchain?

We visited this issue a long time ago. I believe someone added a link to some tor porn image. If it was child porn I do not recall.

This was years ago. Some people made a big deal out of it. Nothing came of it. The law they figured out that it was no big deal.

Amount of custom data you can enter is so small it can not hold picture. It can, at best, hold link, or reference to file / picture.

With Datacoin you can upload files into its blockchain and reclaim with your private key. I think this is a really good and innovative idea but the possibility of storing illegal content without any control crippled DTC.

on the other hand datacoin would be pointless if you could censor it. Now datacoin is around for a while. Do we have porn in that blockchain right now? I would not think so. Also it would be easy to find such a pedophile that does that via his ip. So people really threw out a beautiful project because they had fear something could happen that really couldn't. The person doing that would be found very easy if pools comply with the searching (porn-transaction relayed by some ip can be found if pools are on board which they would be in case of childporn).

I don't think this can be done on the Bitcoin blockchain, but there are other coins that have this feature built in. I have no idea about the ramifications of this though.

I am very interested in this topic. How do I store any custom string in the BTC blockchain?

There's nothing stopping someone sending child porn (or indeed any 'illegal' data) to someone's bank account by encoding the bits as a whole lot of microtransfers for $0.01 or $0.02 for example.

There is a real child porn image in the block chain.
