Who runs it.

What history those people have.

Where the exchange is legally incorporated.

Where its bank is.

What its fees are.

What its volume is like.

What documentation it will require for AML/KYC purposes.

Does it support two factor auth.

Has it ever been audited / will it work towards that.

How many times will you try to Goxxx me? Will you provide advance notification?

When considering opening an account on a Bitcoin exchange what information would you like to know?

1. How long it is on a market
2. What kind of security they are using
3. How many attacks were already discovered
4. How many users complain about it
5. How fast you can widthdraw/deposit
6. Is support working/answering questions.
7. How long it is on a market
8. Coins volume

Sometimes I give a try to new exchanges like BitSource.org or new Polish market BitMarket.pl

I would like pure transparency at all levels.
That's it.

Thanks roslinpl and darwin.

We are working on our iPhone app currently and are considering adding detailed exchange information to the site.

This list is a solid start for information we can gather and share with you, so I really appreciate your input.

Any thoughts on a user maintained exchange rating system?

Was thinking of doing a Bitcoin rating system similar to star ratings but with coins, i.e. 5 coins = awesome exchange, 0 coins = crappy exchange.

While I still need to figure out how to keep people from abusing a peer review system, what would be good areas to review?

Customer Service
Transaction Speed
Interface Design
???

Or just do a single coin rating for overall exchange experience with a comment section for user contributed comments?

Note:

If you operate an exchange and this sounds like a great idea I would love your feedback on how to keep this fair and transparent.

If you operate an exchange and this idea frightens you, you might want to take a look at how you operate....

transaction volume (sign of a big, popular exchange)
coins diversity (must have all the valuable ones, must adopt the popular ones, must have a smart voting system)
fees
security (2FA included)
zero tolerance for various issues:
  NO lags
all-in-one information : sell/buy orders, graphs, transaction history
hard usability : - lack of "on the fly" calculus (for fee, amount )
                       - lack of one click add values to fill a field
lazy/unresponsive support
