The article doesn't sound impossible, but hackers can probably make more money from pwned devices by using them as spam distribution vehicles, and those pesky hackers are a remarkably economical bunch, even though they don't pay for the resources they use. It has been proven that the NSA has hacked in to the webcams of close to 30 million users. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened to the CC cameras as well.
