Title: In Memory of eXch - Wallet Recommendations Not to Be Forgotten!
Post by: Trêvoid on May 02, 2025, 05:21:54 AM
Hello everyone,

As eXch closure in May 2025, regulatory challenges and allegations, it’s important to remember the valuable guidance the platform provided over the years. eXch was more than just an exchange it was a community hub (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577207.0) that emphasized security, privacy, and user empowerment.

To honor the legacy of eXch and help newcomers navigate the complex world of cryptocurrency safely, here are the wallet recommendations originally shared by eXch trusted options that remain relevant and reliable today.

https://talkimg.com/images/2025/05/02/U2gCTW.png

Desktop Wallets

Electrum (BTC): Fast, secure, and feature-rich Bitcoin wallet.  (https://electrum.org)

Electrum-LTC (LTC): Litecoin version of Electrum. (https://electrum-ltc.org)

Sparrow (BTC): Privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet with advanced coin control.   (https://sparrowwallet.com/)

Feather (XMR): Lightweight Monero wallet emphasizing privacy.   (https://featherwallet.org/)

MyCrypto (ETH + ERC20): Open-source Ethereum wallet.   (https://download.mycrypto.com/)

MMGen (BTC, LTC, XMR, ETH + ERC20): Multi-coin command-line wallet for advanced users.   (https://github.com/mmgen/mmgen-wallet)

Mobile Wallets

Unstoppable Wallet (BTC, LTC, DASH, ETH + ERC20): Available on F-Droid, prioritizes privacy and security.  (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/io.horizontalsystems.bankwallet)

Electrum (BTC, LN): Mobile version of Electrum on F-Droid.   (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.electrum.electrum/)

Brume Wallet (ETH): Privacy-focused Ethereum wallet on F-Droid.  (https://f-droid.org/packages/eth.brume.wallet/)

WARNING:
eXch strongly recommended only mobile wallets included in the official F-Droid repository. This ensures apps are built via reproducible builds by F-Droid’s infrastructure, reducing risks from compromised developers or hidden modifications.

Browser Wallets

Enkrypt (ETH + ERC20): Open-source Ethereum browser extension.   (https://www.enkrypt.com/)

Hardware Wallets

Foundation Passport: Air-gapped, open-source hardware wallet for secure cold storage.  (https://foundationdevices.com/)

Why This Matters

These recommendations come directly from eXch expertise and commitment to user security. Even as eXch shutdowns, its guidance on safe wallet usage should not be forgotten. Newcomers and veterans can benefit from these trusted tools to protect their crypto assets.

Let’s keep the spirit of eXch alive by prioritizing security, privacy, and open-source solutions in our crypto journeys.

Privacy is not a crime.

Thank you.

It's a shame they were taken down and how it all happened. Bybit gets hacked for $1.5 billion, hackers choose exch due to its privacy friendly nature, then they get persecuted for what ultimately stemmed from a centralized exchange's poor security.

I agree that privacy is important and also not a crime. This forum should have a board to discuss privacy. Despite the community already coming to consensus on 2 occasions to add a board, it still doesn't exist unfortunately. This is a great contribution to helping those achieve it though, you've cut straight to the point with solutions that are pro-privacy. Nice work :)

This is a good sharing, is that all the wallet posted by exch?

MyCrypto, MMGen, Brume Wallet and Enkrypt are new for me, I haven't heard them.

How about Bluewallet, Trezor, Mycellium, Coldcard, Seedsigner, Bitbox etc? many people are mentioning those wallets, I also mention them because I've use some of them and I never had any issue with those wallets.

I usually choose by using this site recommendation https://walletscrutiny.com/

Sparrow (BTC): Privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet with advanced coin control.

Hardware Wallets

Foundation Passport: Air-gapped, open-source hardware wallet for secure cold storage.

It seems the technical staff behind eXch really knows their stuff. Out of all the hardware wallets available on the market today they’ve recommended Passport by Foundation, and I fully agree with their choice. I also appreciated that they gave a nod to Sparrow which is one of the better software wallets out there. I've used eXch several times to swap between different cryptocurrencies and each transaction went smoothly. I hope they follow through current obstacles with the use of their rebranding to left standing in the space.

We can only thank eXch for all its contributions to the bitcoin community. It will leave a huge legacy and we will be in need of services of this quality, as it's unlikely that another company with such quality will emerge. It was a pleasure to use eXch's services, they are note infinity!
~
Regarding the list, I agree with satscraper, software wallets like electrum and sparrow are some of the best options for desktop, iti's much better to use my hardware wallets through the UI of these wallets. The same goes for Passport hardware wallet, which has been consolidating itself more and more due to its quality and robustness, although I would include more options like: coldcard, bitbox02 and trezor.

For mobile wallet for bitcoin, I would add bluewallet, green wallet...

eXch played a significant role in the bitcointalk.org community, and closure of their service leaves a huge gap.

Bluewallet and green wallet i have not used them before.

I do agree with most wallet choices suggested by eXch but I do have to add Cake wallet as one of the best open source multi-coin wallets.
Cake is available both on desktop and mobile devices and in my opinion it works better than Unstoppable wallet.
I used both wallets and I had syncing issues in Unstoppable wallet many times, unlike with Cake wallet that recently added faster background sync.

It's interesting to remind what wallets the eXch team was recommending to crypto users but it would be even more interesting to get a list of reliable and trustworthy alternatives of this platform to be able to exchange cryptos safely, especially Monero, now. It's very sad they've left the crypto universe, but users need to be able to continue to do what they were doing before their close. The crypto world must keep turning after them.

eXch was great for privacy and freedom. The fact they always cheered for wallets and apps that were available on f-droid, meaning they weren't trapped by google or ios rules, means they wanted users to be able to use apps regardless of the tyrant government decisions. We need more companies like them that don't care if KYC is being pushed by bureaucrats. Thanks for the list.

MyCrypto (ETH + ERC20): Open-source Ethereum wallet.

This is kind of a funny recommendation considering it was created by someone who was a strong opponent of eXch. MyCrypto was a good wallet back in the day but it seems like it was abandoned shortly after their founder began working with Metamask. The latest version released on their Github is from several years ago.

I don't know eXch that much when they were active, but after reading their farewell note and knowing how committed they still are in bringing down phishing sites even though they're ceasing operation shows they had great integrity and makes me like them very much. They were strong advocates of privacy and security. I admire that a lot and although the government and others fighting them may have won the fight, but eXch surely left a good legacy behind and it is worth noting like you brought some of their recommendations here.

Aside from eXch being a good privacy platform, I like their model of operation, how they are always available to address every issue, and how they value their reputation. But, if we have more platforms that didn't care about KYC and provide the needed privacy for crypto transaction but still don't provide the needed security for the platform by making their service usable by people who are genuinely privacy enthusiasts not the people that use their service illicit tnadsaction the government will still take them down.

That's the area where most privacy provider platforms are lagging behind. They provide good privacy services, but they didn't make sure that the privacy abusers don't see their services.

And how will they make sure of that? Even on non-privacy service providers, platform abusers still make use of it. I don't even see any way that any platform that preaches about privacy can limit abusers from using their service, and if you are directing your idea to censoring, then there will be no much difference from regulated, centralised exchanges out there. Not asking for KYC is one thing; the other is what you do to keep your customers safe and give them the freedom they deserve.

protecting user freedom with preventing abuse, but without KYC, stopping bad actors is very difficult without compromising privacy or resorting to censorship

Most of this hacker wallet address was reported. What privacy service provider will to is setting the bot that will reject transaction executed by the wallet address that was reported as hacker from using their service or else they will have issue with the authority, shutdown their business from operation, and sooner or later that will be no reliable privacy service provider to use for genuine privacy enthusiasts.

There is always a price to pay for every solution presented. If a privacy provider platform wants to keep its business operation, they have to make sure that most privacy abuser wallet addresses reported can't use its service. Besides, there is a crypto wallets that integrate these features to safeguard its users.

Once you know what you're doing, you will always provide the best and at the same time recommend the best of all for others to use, that was what i have discovered about eXch, they are of excellence and also try to promote same, making people to understand the reason why privacy and security over crypto assets are very important, if it were to be some other platforms, they may not do like his for any reason as they don't care, but as a community here, we value the service eXch rendered to people and will missed thier impact on the community.

Certainly!

Their absence will definitely be felt. As a bitcointalk community, it’s up to us to carry forward that legacy (eXch) continuing to prioritize security, privacy, and mutual support.

We’ll miss eXch presence, but their influence will continue to inspire us all!

They weren't actually taken down. Their platform wasn't seized by the authorities. They weren't even ordered to halt operations. Moreover, there wasn't even a single case actually filed against them by the DOJ or whatever government agency. What they did was a voluntary shut down. It was the decision of the majority of their team to just "cease and retreat instead of going against strong winds".

They had to voluntarily bow down to prevent "harm to innocent people or this forum". They were honorable until the end.

I was not that police or other authorities shut them down Instead of this team themselves decided to stop. Reason they gave that they wanted to prevent harm to innocent people or this online place and that they were doing right thing until end makes them like they were responsible. It shows they might have seen potential dangers or problems if they continued to operate.
It is interesting that you stressed that tauthorities did not actually do anything they did not take over their website and did not tell them to stop and did not even file any lawsuits. This makes it even clearer that decision to shut down was themselves because of how they saw things not because they were forced by law.

To me, being pressured by an authority to take the service down (and exch taking it down as a result) is taken down. Though yes, they were definitely honorable to the end, and the whole situation is a darn shame.

Sometimes the strongest move is knowing when to step back. It takes integrity to prioritize others' safety over pride or persistence. Respect to the team for choosing the harder path with honor, kudos to eXch till the end.

Reason they gave that they wanted to prevent harm to innocent people or this online place

They might now be left without the funds to continue their operations after "German law enforcement seized 34 million euros ($38 million) in cryptocurrency from eXch" (https://cointelegraph.com/news/germany-seizes-38-million-crypto-bybit-hack-linked-exch). With that in mind I wonder if there could be any legal consequences for users who simply used their platform for swapping could they potentially be accused of involvement in a money laundering scheme?. I have used eXch a few times >:(

maybe it would be a good idea to link to the official website for those wallets, like it was done on eXch.
i'm saying this because this is the beginners & help board so someone who is still new to crypto might see the list, google one of the wallet, click the first result, which could be a fake site and end up downloading a malicious version and lose his coins.

I've known unstoppable wallet to be the best mobile wallet so far for my own reason but thanks for sharing this, I never knew about foundation devices, this is crazy, it looks like a device straight from a James bond movie, good to see another airgapped hardware wallet from them, bookmarked, and could be my next hardware wallet device soon.

I don't know much about eXch and it's a shame that I am just knowing them when they are going out of business, like someone said on here, sometimes the best thing to do is to step down and lay low, I've known this to be helpful at times.

Hi KiaKia, It is true that some criminals may exploit privacy or anonymity to hide their activities. However, this does not mean privacy itself is the problem or that it should be abandoned.

We need to protect people’s privacy while finding smart and fair ways to stop crime.

Foundation has also developed a mobile wallet called Envoy designed with privacy and usability in mind. One of its standout features is the ability to operate in standalone mode meaning it doesn’t require pairing with Foundation's hardware wallet (Passport) to function. One can also highlight several of it's key features such as to be the fully open-source with reproducible builds, supporting connectivity via TOR, capability to connect either to Foundation's node or your own one like Bitcoin Core. The latest Envoy release is 1.8.6 (https://foundation.xyz/2025/02/envoy-version-1-8-6-is-now-available/). The documentation and setup guide can be found here (https://docs.foundation.xyz/envoy/home/).

Agree there's only few people violate it but damn government they let everyone suffer.

Its like they generalize that all people want to protect their privacy is criminal to take crazy actions towards sites that protect our rights.

Maybe its better for them to find other approach to combat illegal actions happened and they stop attacking those sites offering good service to the community. We use such service for our protection to, since there's lots of criminals around trying to find ways to penetrate or attack us.

Right, privacy is a fundamental right, not a crime, and while criminals may misuse it, shutting down services like exch.cc only punishes ordinary people who rely on privacy for protection instead of targeting the real offenders.
