Title: How to Export/Import Labels In Popular Wallets
Post by: Pmalek on June 21, 2025, 04:20:44 PM
BIP-329 defines a new standard for exporting and importing labels from Bitcoin wallets, but many wallets still don't support this functionality.
dkbit98 did a good job listing those that do in his topic, BIP-329 Labels Export Wallets (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5533820.0). That thread lists the wallets that support BIP-329, but I wanted to take it one step further and explain how to export/import the labels manually from popular software wallets and hardware wallet native apps regardless if they support BIP-329 or not.

Without any delay, let's get to it.
I have contacted customer support of popular wallet apps and asked them for information about exporting labels from their software. The following is information they told me via live chat or e-mail, plus some info that I managed to find online.

This topic is a work in progress. I can update it when new information becomes available and when we find information about new wallets that support importing and exporting labels.

Hardware Wallets and their Native Apps

* Bitbox and Bitbox App
Supports exporting labels: YES

The Bitbox app supports exporting account names and transaction labels for Bitcoin using the BIP-329 standard. The app refers to the exported information as "notes".

How to export notes from the BitBox App:

Quote
1. Connect and unlock your BitBox02 hardware wallet. (You can skip this step if you have the 'Remember wallet' option enabled for your accounts).
2. In the BitBoxApp, click on Settings and ensure you are on the General settings page (this is usually the default page within Settings).
3. Scroll down the General page.
4. Click the button labeled "Export notes".
5. A file saving dialog from your operating system will open. Choose a desired destination path and file name, then click Save.
6. The exported file contains the necessary information to restore your account names and transaction notes. Save this file securely or transfer it to another device.

How to import notes into the BitBox App:

Quote
1. Connect and unlock your BitBox02 hardware wallet. (You can skip this step if you have the 'Remember wallet' option enabled).
2. In the BitBoxApp, click on Settings and ensure you are on the General settings page.
3. Scroll down the General page.
4. Click the button labeled "Import notes".
5. A file opening dialog from your operating system will appear. Navigate to and select the previously saved file containing the notes you wish to import, then click Open.
6. Your transaction notes and account names from the file are now restored and visible within the BitBoxApp.

* Coldcard
Supports exporting labels: NO

Quote
There are no labels on the CC itself, just on your companion app like sparrow. You should be able to export your labels from there.

* Foundation Devices and Envoy App
Supports exporting labels: Yes
- Only applicable to Envoy standalone wallets and not when Envoy is paired with Foundation hardware wallets.

Envoy supports exporting of labels and tags as .json files in BIP-329 format.

How to export labels using the Envoy app:

1. From the Account selection, click on the two horizontal lines on the top left.
2. Click "Backups."
3. Click "Advanced Backups."
4. Select "Export Tags & Labels (BIP-329)" and select a location where you want to save the file.
5. Click "Save."

* Jade and Blockstream App
Supports exporting labels: NO

Quote
At this time, it is not possible to export address labels or account names from Blockstream Green. Labels entered for transactions and custom account names are stored locally and are not included in your recovery phrase or backup data.

* Keystone and Keystone Nexus
Supports exporting labels: NO

Quote
At the moment, Keystone does not support bulk exporting of address labels or account names. We understand how valuable this information is, and we appreciate your feedback.

For now, we recommend manually recording any important labels or account names you wish to keep. That said, we’ve noted your request, and we will seriously consider adding support for exporting this data in future updates.

* Ledger and Ledger Live
Supports exporting labels: NO

Ledger Live supports exporting transaction history but not labels and account names.

Quote
Please note that this CSV export will include your transaction history but may not include address labels or account names. For precise tax reporting or more detailed data management, consider using a service like ZenLedger, available in the 'Discover' section of Ledger Live.
Unfortunately, Ledger Live does not currently support exporting address labels or account names directly. You might need to manually document these details if they are crucial for your records.

* SafePal and SafePal App
Supports exporting labels: NO

* Satochip
Supports exporting labels: NO

Quote
Those information are stored locally within Sparrow Wallet. You can find all ressources here: https://sparrowwallet.com/docs/faq.html

* Tangem and Tangem App
Supports exporting labels: NO

* Trezor and Trezor Suite
Supports exporting labels: YES

Labels from Trezor Suite can be stored locally on your device or synced with your cloud storage account, such as Google Drive or Dropbox. When the labeling feature is on, you can label receiving and outgoing transactions and addresses and rename accounts.

First, you have to enable labeling in the app. Here is how you do that:
Quote
- Open Trezor Suite and click the gear icon in the top-right corner to access Settings.
- In the Application settings tab, scroll down to Labeling.
- Click the toggle to enable labeling.
- Confirm the action on your Trezor device.
- Choose where to store your labels in the "Save labels" window (Dropbox, Google Drive, or locally).

How to label receiving addresses:

1. Hover over the receiving address and click "Add label".
2. Enter a label name and click the green checkmark to confirm.

How to label outgoing addresses:

1. In the Send tab, locate the "Address" input field.
2. Click "Add label".
3. Enter the label name and click the green checkmark to confirm.

Where to find labels that are stored locally:

Quote
- MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/@trezor/suite-desktop/metadata/
- Linux: ~/.config/@trezor/suite-desktop/metadata/
- Windows 11: C:\Users\YOURPCNAME\AppData\Roaming@trezor\suite-desktop\metadata

Read this (https://trezor.io/guides/trezor-suite/trezor-suite-desktop/labels-in-trezor-suite) for information about storing and finding Trezor Suite labels on the cloud.

Found the list of wallets that may compliment that one published by OP:

Technically it's possible to support address labeling directly on hardware wallets, but due to their limited memory it's pretty impractical. That’s why this functionality is typically handled by the companion app.
As for Envoy, Foundation hasn’t implemented address labeling in this app yet, so it currently lacks support for BIP 329. Hope, they’ll consider adding it in one of their future releases.

I am familiar with that list. I saw a link to it in dkbit98 topic that I linked to in my OP. That list is limited to software that supports the new BIP-329 standard. The only wallet that's interesting on that list to me is Nunchuk. According to the data, it supports BIP-329. I will take a look at the process of exporting and importing labels with it to see how it's done. Another software wallet I forgot to mention is Specter Wallet. I wonder if they have a label importing/exporting feature!?

One year ago I had this app installed but it was running pretty slow with my Passport Core paired and I ended up knocking down Spectre from my machine. Right now I sieved through their releases and evidenced that many of them include changes relevant to address labeling. For example in v.0.8.1 release (https://github.com/cryptoadvance/specter-desktop/releases?page=9) there is the entry "Add addresses labels to wallet backup file" . From this it seems clear for methat Spectre supports importing and exporting address labels.

Does anyone here use Specter Wallet or has used it in the past?

I am trying to find out how to export and import wallet labels with it. I couldn't find anything useful on the website or the documentation. I created a GitHub issue last week but no replies there. Seems like their GitHub is pretty quiet.

I downloaded the software on my laptop to check it out myself. It's not like your usual Bitcoin software. It immediately asks to connect your hardware wallet if you want to create a new wallet or import your xPUBs. I don't want to do that. I also didn't see any option to create a hot wallet.

I used it in the past.

If they didn't change it, it should be as simple as: Open the wallet->Go to Transactions tab->Export.
The transactions including the labels will be exported as csv file, can also be done in the Address tab to export the addresses and thier labels instead.
To import, go to the wallet's Settings tab and in the advanced tab, there should be an Import option there.

Yeah, it's more of a browser that works as an interface to a daemon (specterd) running in the background.
This is why the GUI is not so responsive compared to other wallets.

Thanks nc50lc,

Since you aren't using the wallet now, how sure are you that you remember the procedure properly? I can't test it myself so I can only take your word for it, which I will. But before I add this to my OP, please check one more time if that's the way to do it.

If I understand properly, the Specter Wallet doesn't have a unique option just for exporting and importing labels. They are included in the .csv file together with the transactions and addresses.

I can test this on a new install to double-check.
But since you've mentioned that their GitHub page isn't active, I bet that the buttons and settings are in the same locations.

I'll try to post an update after a few hours with some screenshots.

-update-

The options are there and surprisingly, it's compatible with Electrum's export but definitely not BIP329 standard.

@Pmalek, you can also change "NO" to "Yes" for Envoy by Foundation. The latest release, i.e. v.2.0.0 added BIP 329 support to this wallet which can be used ether in the standalone mode or alongside with Passport line of HW.

The v.2.0.0 beta is currently in pre-release. However, it will be updated to the latest stable version in just a few days. This is their standard practice to set short delay for release of stable version to catch any potential bugs.

That's positive news. Another hardware wallet native software supports exporting and importing labels. The last piece of info I got from their support team was that it's a feature they are working on and plan to implement but they don't have a set timeline for it. I am glad it's already done. I will wait with updating this in my OP because it hasn't official been released yet, and I would like to know the step-by-step instructions on the export and import processes.

Thanks!

Hello Pmalek,

I'd like to let you know that inside AOBT we consider your thread a very valuable one. As a consequence, we decided to translate (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5442314.msg61853233#msg61853233) your topic in multiple local boards. I hope this is great news for you :)

Usually, we consider a thread as "done" after we make 10 translations for it, but also more than 10 can be done.

And, so far, already 2 translations are available:

- Pidgin translation (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5399898.msg65544867#msg65544867), made by Chilwell
- Russian translation (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5549333), made by zasad@

And, if you are so kind, would you like to add our translation to the bottom of your OP? If you wish to do it, here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5536692) is an example of how NotATether listed the translations made by AOBT. Of course, it's up to you, but the translators would be very glad if you'd list them at the bottom of OP.

Cheers!

Thanks for the information and the step-by-step explanation.
I have heard of Liana Wallet but can't remember seeing any posts of users on the forum who use it regularly. Looking at the images, you seem to use it together with a hardware wallet. Do you like it and does it offer anything unique or different than what you can get from Sparrow, Electrum, or another popular software wallet?

@Pmalek, Liana is one-of-a-kind of-the-shelf private keys coordinator which has capability to create and manage advanced schemes involving those keys. These schemes may include features like multiple backup keys with varying activation times, decaying multisig (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5544304.msg65413489#msg65413489), and more. This functionality which is in fact due to Liana's Miniscript support opens up potential to use Liana in " passphrase loss-resistant wallet using HW with an extended BIP39 seed phrase" (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5441422.msg65282711#msg65282711), or in various inheritance plans.

P.S. Other day, I have opened up the threat dedicated to Liana wallet (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5545366.msg65436576#msg65436576).

Hey Pmalek, please allow me to present you the Romanian translation of your topic: Cum să imporți / exporți etichete în portofelele populare (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5550839.0).

I hope this is good news :)

Apart from that, I also notified zasad@ and Chilwell (the AOBTers which already made the first 2 translations) to update their translations, in order to include the two updates you made to OP (about Nunchuk and Liana wallets).

Cheers!

This is good news... And, also, several more translations will come from AOBT, of course... at least until we reach 10 of them :)

Hihi!

The "Gazeta" part of your username will always be an association with Italy for me (although it's spelled differently). I know I mentioned this to you before. ;D

True... But Romanian and Italian are "sister languages"... In fact, from all Latin languages, Romanian este the closest one to Latin (excepting Italian, of course, for obvious reasons). This happens because, unlike other Latin conquerings (like the ones from Spain, Portugal, France), when Latins conquered Dacia (the country which existed 2000 years ago on the territory where Romania is located now), they did not only install military camps... They moved here. They remained here... settled... married the locals... And their descendants did not consider themselves Romans anymore, but Romanians.

So, practically, due to this combination of cultures, the Dacians started using Latin more and more... mixing up their language with Latin as well... and the result was Romanian language -- the closest Latin language to the original Latin :)

So, of course, many Romanian words are very close to Italian ones, including "gazeta" -- which, in Italian, is "gazetta" :)

With the release of Envoy app 2.0.1, the software has added an option to export labels and tags in BIP-329 format. I believe that only exporting works as there doesn't seem to be an import feature.

Here is how you can do that:

Foundation Devices and Envoy App
Supports exporting labels: Yes
- Only applicable to Envoy standalone wallets and not when Envoy is paired with Foundation hardware wallets.

Envoy supports exporting of labels and tags as .json files in BIP-329 format.

How to export labels using the Envoy app:

1. From the Account selection, click on the two horizontal lines on the top left.
2. Click "Backups."
3. Click "Advanced Backups."
4. Select "Export Tags & Labels (BIP-329)" and select a location where you want to save the file.
5. Click "Save."

@Pmalek, the instruction above applies only to accounts associated with the Envoy mobile standalone wallet.

If Envoy's account is relevant to paired Passport device in my case  Passport Core then there is currently no option to export or import labels and tags.

That said, for Envoy standalone wallets, there is an option to import labels and tags using the BIP-329 format. Here's how:

1) From the Account selection, tap on the two horizontal lines on the top left.
2) Tap "Backups."
3) Tap "Advanced Backups."
4) Tap "Download Settings&Metadata..."

I did create a hot wallet just for testing purposes to check the export/import feature, but didn't pair Envoy with a hardware wallet. It's interesting that the option would be missing for your paired Passport Core. When you access "Advanced Backups", is the option not there at all or is it greyed out?

That option downloads (which means exports) a file with all your settings and metadata (labels) that you can save on your device. I don't see an import button. How do you import your labels from the same downloaded file or another BIP-329 compatible file?

No such option at all.

This means import rather than export.

It may be used after wallet restoring from SEED you know and any BIP-329 comparable file encrypted with this SEED labels are bound to addresses that in turn are bound to SEED. Just tap the relevant file:

Sorry, I misled you. That "Download" option actually refers to downloading to their server when Magic Backup is turned on. Label importing happens automatically when you're restoring from their servers using Magic Recovery. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=87&v=0Fnd_BfK-OQ&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fduckduckgo.com%2F)

Thus, their label exporting/importing functionality is only useful for users of their Magic Recovery service, and not beneficial to others. I'm becoming disillusioned with them. >:(

P.S. I have corrected my previous post.

Once more sorry.

Perhaps they will make further changes to this functionality in the future. This is the first Envoy version that supports label exports from hot wallets at least.

I thought about tagging @foundationdvcs and sending them a PM to check our conversation and shed some light on all this but I can see that they haven't been online since May. I will get in touch with their customer support again and ask. In the meantime, I will make an update in my OP to mention that label exports only work with Envoy (hot) standalone wallets.

Right, besides, it seems that those exported files can’t be imported into wallets that support the BIP 329 import feature, since the files are encrypted. They can only be used through their Magic Backup service. Looks like they're targeting "pea-gooses" with this approach. BTW, I have uninstalled Envoy from my Android because after upgrading to the latest 2.01 their Magic Backups is always turned on and I can not deactivate it. Looks like a bug form their side.

Perhaps it depends on which of the two options under "Advanced Backups" you choose. "Export Tags & Labels (BIP-329)" or "Download Settings & Metadata." The first should allow you to later import your labels in other BIP-329 supporting wallets, like Sparrow Wallet.

This is what their documentation (https://foundation.xyz/2025/07/envoy-version-2-0-1-is-now-available/) says:
Quote
You can now export your wallet metadata in BIP-329 format! This will save your Notes and Tags in a way that you can easily import them in other software wallets, like Sparrow. Head to Advanced backups under Backups in the app menu to find this option.

Hey Pmalek!

I'd like to let you know that one more translation was made by AOBT:

- Ukrainian translation (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=236982.msg65616890#msg65616890), made by DrBeer

At same time, I informed the 3 AOBTers which already translated your topic to apply your most recent update (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5547466.msg65611092#msg65611092) of the topic. I also added the update inside the Romanian translation :)

I have made small changes to the Foundation Devices and Envoy App part in my OP. I see now that I forgot to make those changes in the post you linked to above. I will do that now. You can see below how it looks in my OP for the moment. This could change again depending on the reply from the Foundation Devices support team. I emailed them yesterday asking for more information about the label export function. I am interested if and when the export feature will be available for users with paired Foundation Devices hardware wallets with Envoy.

Oh you don't have to worry about that, Pmalek! I took the updates straight from the OP :)
I used your post only as reference but the changes are reflected inside the translation as they were taken from the main OP.

(And, I believe, the other translators do the same.)

Cheers!

@Pmalek It looks like they’ve addressed the issue related to paired Passport wallets in the latest 2.0.2 release. However, I’m a bit hesitant to test it with my Passport Core. As I mentioned earlier, I completely removed  Envoy app from my phone because I don't like their Magic Backup feature and wanted to eliminate any potential seed leakage risk. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks for reporting this. According to them, only some Passport hardware wallet users had issues exporting their labels and notes using the Envoy app. You were one of them.

I contacted them on 26 July asking for more information and if it is possible for users with Passport-paired devices to export their labels. I expected an email but never got it. But when I opened the page you linked to above I saw that they replied via live chat. They say that they identified an issue with BIP-329 exports when using Passport-paired accounts in the Envoy app. The support agent said that they opened a ticket with their engineering team to resolve the problem. I can only assume that it's now fixed. I will ask them again over live chat if that is the case.
