Title: Have Bitcoin donations disappeared?
Post by: Bitcoin7543425 on August 09, 2025, 10:06:07 PM
I remember a few years ago Bitcoin donations were everywhere on forums blogs and even small personal projects it was a way for people to show appreciation and support without the need for complex payment systems lately I do not see it happening as much maybe fees or market changes have played a role or maybe people are just using other methods I personally still believe in the idea of community support and I think even small contributions can motivate people to keep creating and sharing valuable content for everyone

Bitcoin donations are for special occasions, and most times only on the case of emergency that donations are made to help most vulnerable, the idea of donating to project or individual for creating a platform, content or whatever, make no much sense when in reality they can market those content themselves and get paid for that instead soliciting for donations here and there, if you say that the presence of such donations are not seen like before, I say it because of the way previous donations where handled, most times, Bitcoin donated get into private wallets without any explanation for how it gets spent in the end.

The idea of community awareness towards Bitcoin adoption has really helped in sharing the good news about Bitcoin, especially in remote areas where they are far behind in technology advancement; it can still be going on around the world, but showing up here in the forum is not that rampant as it used to be because some people do use it to fish for merits on the forum, while some do it genuinely for their aim of sharing awareness and support to their community. It is still open, I think. No one is stopping such awareness; it is helpful, I think.

AFAIK, bitcoin donations are still an option to collect funds for charity purposes or as a mean of motivation for skilled persons. Few years ago during covid pandemic lockup, a lot of charity campaigns took place here in bitcointalk collecting funds to help people in many regions arround the world. And there still many free services that accept donations in bitcoin, which many of them are still running relying on those donations.

Keep posting about bitcoin donations and asking for donations and including your bitcoin address on your posts, nothing is going to happen except you getting banned very soon..

It's high time you realized that you are not the only one who has a family and wants a better future them, you knew about bitcoin years ago, why didn't you invest in it? Why didn't you buy alot of it back then so you won't have to beg for donations right now?

Don't think or believe that you have a problem that is bigger than that of any one here on this forum, and here is not a place for donations, if you want support for what ever reason, go and create a gofundme campaign, you can even share the link here and who ever wishes to support you will do, posting your bitcoin address on this forum for Bitcoin donations will get you banned pretty soon.

After reading OP’s last topic (which was deleted by moderators) it is obvious why he started this thread, the purpose was to find out if the forum is open to donating bitcoins before opening his own charity thread.

Some time ago, around June, I still saw that there was an open donation, and it was also in one of the threads in this forum, about donations to support Roman Storm, and I guess you don't follow this forum, so you said "a few years ago".

Here it is what I mentioned : Bitcointalk.org @NotATether - Roman Storm needs our help! (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5548017.0)

Looking to Build a Better Future for My Family with Bitcoin Support
You should be aware that donations aren't made for personal gain, they are usually for the benefit of many people. Even if they are made for personal gain, it is usually related to a figure who has contributed to many people, so he/she deserves assistance or support by the Bitcoin Donations. CMIIW.

Furthermore, you may not have read the rules, which you can find in the Meta subforum, one of which is about the "No Begging" rule :  Bitcointalk.org @mprep - Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0)

Now almost the entire world's eyes have been opened to the huge potential that can be obtained from Bitcoin, they are starting to realize that Bitcoin is not just an asset that is often considered a Ponzi scheme or other negative things, Bitcoin donations that were made previously were very helpful in spreading the good news about Bitcoin and now may only be intended for emergency purposes.

Now, perhaps the numbers and enthusiasm of generous people are not the same as before in responding to Bitcoin donations for charity or similar things because of the behavior of some individuals who are not trustworthy or only want personal gain. The behavior of some people who only take advantage of the generosity of others has reduced their interest in donating, but if the fund holders can be trusted, perhaps enthusiasm for charity is still very high even if it is only anonymous.

There are many big charity organization accepting bitcoin right now and I think majority of people are donating there since they are deemed as more trusted and there's proof that the donation actually going to the people in need.

So the bitcoin donation is still there, but more targeted to recognized organization with clear causes that needs to be solved.

Just look up at google and you'd find so many big charity organization accepting bitcoin since a long time ago and the influential figure always donate through them.

I disagree, old projects are still accepting Bitcoin donation, some new projects also accept Bitcoin donation too.

It might due to tech winter hence not many people want to create a new project, they have more responsibility, so they don't have much time for fun.

Usually people post something with a purpose, this is what the purpose why @OP created this thread. :D

Although the forum not allow begging, but if someone create a honest project and accepting Bitcoin as donation, the forum won't delete the thread.

The market is still bullish and there is not yet time for cryptocurrency winter season but I am happy if there are less altcoin projects created recently and in the future. I know it is not the fact but if it actually happens, it's good for many people as they will be exposed with less scam altcoin projects and it is helpful to protect them from many risky scam projects.

The fact is quite opposite as in bullish market, during bullish months, scammers will try to abuse the bullish trend and positive sentiment in the market in order to launch as most potential projects as possible. With positive sentiment, people are more easily convinced by new potential projects while the fact is painful. Potential projects will be tested by a bear market and most potential projects turn to dead, abandoned and scam projects in very first months of a bear market.

It actually depends on who is accepting the donations. If you talk about any service that is available on this forum, most services accept donations in Bitcoin. The payment method of the donation totally depends on who is accepting the donation. Let's say WHO is accepting donations, now it depends on WHO if they want to accept donations in Bitcoin. As a Bitcoin user, I would always prefer using Bitcoin instead of using my credit card.

Not only donations, I would like to pay in Bitcoin for online services. I wanted to buy Github copilot pro last week, and I had to use my card to buy the subscription. My card blocked the transaction saying it was suspicious and I was unable to buy the subscription. It is sad that a brand like Github doesn't accept Bitcoin payment yet.

Bitcoin donation, just like every other forms of donation, have not disappeared. Bitcoin is still one of the fastest way of raising donations for a good course as have been shown for the latest popular donations to Ukraine and Gaza. Why it seems that the zeal for organizing fund raising in Bitcoin have diminished is because scammers have infiltrated the system just like they will always do to any legit project. Hence, people are becoming extremely careful with Bitcoin donations.

I want to clarify that I am not here to beg or ask for charity I’m working hard to improve my life and provide for my family Bitcoin is an opportunity I believe in and any support from this community would mean encouragement and motivation to keep going I appreciate everyone’s time and kindness and I promise to contribute back whenever I can

This is exactly what I felt was missing from the explanation for this post. When I started reading the thread, I thought only of begging, and now I realize that I was not mistaken. I wonder if this beggar understands that his desire to "build a better future for his family with the support of Bitcoin" should not come from begging. Many young families have truly accepted Bitcoin into their lives and are trying to live solely on it, but these are different stories. Every time I see something like this, I feel sorry for such people, and this is not pity because of their problems, but because they allow themselves to be so pathetic and insignificant.

What makes you think that someone should help you here? Do you want to hear about everyone's problems? I think there is no one who has not had difficulties, no matter how big or small.
Yours,  ~Bitcoin7543425

A few years ago I remember getting a random Bitcoin donation of 0.001337 BTC. That felt nice. Wasn't asking for anything, and nobody told me they were sending me coins, they just arrived. And there were several on-forum giveaways here that were legit, although they were years before that. I remember BiPolarBob used to conduct a lot of them. Of course, they were always taken advantage of by multi-accounters, and that's a good reason why its hard to give away coins today. Any bit of generosity will be thoroughly taken advantage of by the excessively greedy.

This forum can donate bitcoin to anyone at their own wish depending on the circumstances that surround the incident that requires a donation, evidence and trust in a transparent manner are also important, the members are the ones that organizes for this and not the forum itself, once they feels the need for one.

It's improper to see that people are now taking advantage of these to solicit for fund for their own personal use, because if we are to go by that, I think everyone of us here has one or two reasons that could make us come to the forum here to seek for financial assistance, which I will like OP to have a rethink and make it right by applying the right approach on this, as this forum is mainly for bitcoin discussion, any other thing done here are just added advantage.

You joined the forum 5 days ago and you’re already asking for donations. It’s not a good look, it looks as if that’s your sole purpose of joining the forum. I understand times are hard but like lovesmayfamilis said, everyone has their own problems even though they don’t talk about it on a public forum.

The forum no longer needs donation, theymos said it repeatedly.

Regarding to charity from community, there were several charity threads like this but after some drama, such community charity is no longer encouraged.
The biggest drama is this one.
Bitcointalk Charity and its funds. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5376475.0)

A latest post of theymos on charity is this one. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5150882.msg51354271#msg51354271)

The voting could be proportional, so if you donate 1 BTC and vote to donate it to the EFF, 1 BTC will be donated to the EFF. ;)

More seriously, this sort of donation pool might have some extra positive effects due to its ability to more effectively market itself and its ability to engage in more complicated projects than just "donate to x charity". But for it to be better than just having donors donate to whoever they want, the pool should probably be an actual tax-exempt nonprofit.

I've thought before about giving forum badges (or maybe even forum BTC credit) for donating x BTC to Bitcoin-accepting charities, but it's difficult to track. There's no way to prove that you donated to the EFF, for example, as far as I can tell. It'd be nice if there was some standard protocol for this sort of thing.

Have Bitcoin donations disappeared?
In the past, Bitcoin donations were very popular, over time, so that the community had lost confidence in those Bitcoin donations, the reason was that many donations were misused and unclear, that was a common reason.
For example:
Topic: Bitcoin Donation Scam ~ Another Strategy. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5411088.0)

For that donation is no longer the best way for now, many negative elements can occur because of irresponsible people.

The fees for Bitcoin transactions are still the same, and there is not that many problems at all. And as for the forum, this might not be the forum; it's not needed anymore. I still see them around, and maybe you just don't see them anymore and haven't come across any of them. This kind of thing is still around, and remember about the wars, past pandemic and other global events that have just happened? It had been in the news that the donation for the cause to help people affected by those can be donated through Bitcoin. So, the method is still there and maybe it's just so happen that you've missed the usual websites that asks for it.

Of course, they were always taken advantage of by multi-accounters, and that's a good reason why its hard to give away coins today. Any bit of generosity will be thoroughly taken advantage of by the excessively greedy.
That is crypto, especially if they do not allow people to get verified with documents like drivers license, national ID card or international passport. People will want to take advantage of donations because people can never be satisfied. But what I see more to this is that bitcoin is more known to the world today to the extent that donations are not needed anymore, unlike when the adoption was very low.
