He actually has a point, and he is telling a story from experience. If those sports bettors are telling him what to do, then it could ruin the whole league. It doesn't mean that it will affect him, but these guys can create some conflict with players, and there are some who might be doing this while they are conspiring with other players.
If that is where the sports industry will circulate, then it opens up manipulation in their stats, which will not be fun to watch anymore.

I might partially disagree on the OP's point because, believe it or not, the sports industry can reach what it is now even without the existence of sports betting. Sports betting, in fact, just started to become an idea because of the existence of sports, which is kind of obvious.

Besides, even without the existence of sports betting, expect that more people will be involved in sports activities because it is part of the country's culture, and there is even a so-called "national sport" per country.

I'm not sure that betting has contributed anything but money - in the form of sponsorships - to the sports industry. It definitely feeds off sports fans who are looking for an extra layer of competition or who think that they can beat the odds that are offered by bookmakers, however the bookmakers make a profit every year which shows you that the average person placing sports bets is not smart enough to pick correctly. The sports betting industry exists because of the sports industry, however you seem to be turning this relationship backwards. We should all be grateful for the money that the sports betting companies plow into individual sports when advertising but don't kid yourself into thinking sports would not exist without them.

Everything that has advantage also has to an extent some level of disadvantage, sports betting so far has added to the participation and viewership of sports across the globe, this is because prediction and winning comes with a reward, and a lot of times this rewards is heavily mouth watering, so you wouldn't blame anybody that wants to participate in sports betting seeing the advantage that comes with it.

 however when sports betting affects the sports activities, like match fixing or trying to influence the outcome of games, this is when the rules that guide the various sports comes in, and anybody or club found wanting will have to pay heavily for it, I can remember a certain time juventus FC an Italian club was accused of match fixing, after when they were found guilty, some points were deducted from them and I think they were relegated or something of that nature. However in times of gambling, the universal role in gambling is for you to show sportsmanship, that is to say, is either you lose some or you win some, so you should not take it to heart when you lose, besides gambling is entirely based on your own discretion, nobody is being coerced to gamble, so whatever revenue the gambling companies are making, it's entirely out of people's discretion.

I can't find any official stats other than some random articles but let's talk about the reality the viewers of sports are billions for popular gaes like football but I don't think people betting on a game will even reach 10% of those numbers. I don't agree with your first sentence: in many countries sports betting has been legal only for the last few years, even in the ones with the greatest tradition like what happens with football in LATAM.
