Post by: Marvelockg on August 30, 2025, 04:40:48 AM What's up with this narrative that the internet will suddenly short down one day? Are we being real about this kind of assumption or we are just painting an hypothetical scenarios that's just vague?
Regardless of how strong the bitcoin protocol is, if the internet shots down, most bitcoin holders will momentarily worry about others things first before Thier bitcoin because it sure will affect life in general. We've gone past that age where the internet can completely shut down for so long without an alternative solution popping up. If it's just for a week, bitcoin will still survive through it. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: Localhostspeed on August 30, 2025, 05:15:57 AM Therefore, with these technologies in place, I feel Bitcoin demonstrates incredible flexibility and resilience, ensuring that even if the global internet goes down, the network will still be able to function and adapt. Stop using AI to spam meaningful thread. You wouldn't go far this way, you will get ban or get tagged later. Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? Depend on where the internet goes off, it's not possible for the entire world to go offline for days without the internet but maybe it can happen in a country where there might be crises but it not stop Bitcoin from working. There are other ways you can send and broadcast Bitcoin transaction without the internet and other nodes will help you relay them to other mining modes. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: X-ray on August 30, 2025, 06:01:12 AM It's always these doomsday scenario.
If such thing happened, other sectors will also be affected. But as long as bitcoin's most updated full node is there, everything will be fine until internet comes back again. Lets be honest though such thing won't happen knowing that recent variety of providers which includes satellite like starlink will make internet hardly go down. This scenario is very unlikely to happen. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: Razmirraz on August 30, 2025, 06:31:46 AM Bitcoin will remain in its position (still exist) and will not disappear even if the internet is turned off for a week or more, the reason is because Bitcoin is a digital asset stored in a blockchain (a decentralized data structure that does not depend on an internet connection). What is certain to happen if the internet goes down is that Bitcoin transactions cannot be carried out and the Bitcoin network cannot function. Bitcoin nodes that require an internet connection to validate transactions will also stop operating while they are without internet access, but will resume operation once the internet is back online.
It is natural for you to speculate like this because nothing is impossible in this world, but if you look at it from a broader perspective on technological developments, then what you fear will not happen at least in the near future because the satellite internet network covers the entire region. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: BitGoba on August 30, 2025, 06:59:28 AM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? The scenario of the internet disappearing is highly unlikely, but if it were to happen, everything would come to a standstill banks, Visa, Mastercard, and the entire global financial system would collapse. In such a situation, society would face far greater problems than Bitcoin itself, as the foundations of modern life and commerce would be disrupted. However, Bitcoin could still be transferred using offline solutions like mesh networks or satellites, ensuring that value can continue to move even in extreme situations. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: SPIDERMAN008 on August 30, 2025, 07:36:21 AM The question you asked seems unrealistic. Because. What I think is funny. If the internet on Earth were destroyed and all electrical devices stopped working and the Earth went back to the primitive era, then it might be possible to stop all Bitcoin operations.

Post by: joniboini on August 30, 2025, 07:37:08 AM What's up with this narrative that the internet will suddenly short down one day? I feel like we get this kind of thread now and then. I remember reading one from years ago, heck, I'm sure we have one from a few months back. It's basically talking about how Bitcoin can survive without the internet. I'd like to believe the OPs are asking out of curiosity instead of deliberately trying to cause FUD. They just need to read more to find out previous discussions instead of making new threads.Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: 348Judah on August 30, 2025, 07:54:12 AM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? Bitcoin is not connected to the satellites and this will be the reason why it does not depend on the internet for its connection, what we make use of is the blockchain technology and this is purely decentralized, the internet cannot be shut down if the satellite is not turned off, and i don't also see the reason to why a satellite should go off, but that aside, bitcoin network solely depends on the blockchain technology and this cannot be affected by any way whether the internet was shut down or not, because it does not depend on it. Post by: arwin100 on August 30, 2025, 08:29:21 AM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? Yeah why not? Bitcoin will not get erased with those occurrence and it will still exist on our wallets. Its like it will enter on deep freeze state because no one can make a transactions since as you said internet is gone said timeline you have mentioned. The only thing will stop is the transaction because the internet is gone for one week. So for sure once internet goes back then it will return to its current value on when it stops. But this thing is impossible to happen and don't see those scenarios would come. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: _act_ on August 30, 2025, 08:57:27 AM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? There are wallet cables that is providing the Internet. Also there are satellites that are providing Internet, example is the commonly know Starlink. I do not think there is anything that will affect these two means of Internet. Anything that affects the two will affect the world in my opinion. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: ABCbits on August 30, 2025, 09:50:17 AM Blockstream satellite exist. So if some miner and mining pool actually utilize those, some blocks will be created within a week. By the way, many satellite offer internet connection service. So your hypothetical scenario have flaws.
What's up with this narrative that the internet will suddenly short down one day? Are we being real about this kind of assumption or we are just painting an hypothetical scenarios that's just vague? You should see recent thread created by OP, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;threads;u=1341921;sa=showPosts (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;threads;u=1341921;sa=showPosts). I believe OP really love talking about hypothetical scenarios. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: sheenshane on August 30, 2025, 10:50:57 AM Yeah, it's an unrealistic question, and it has been asked so many times here.
IDK how it works, but based on what I remember from the thread that discussed this topic before, if the internet goes down, there's an alternative that still allows Bitcoin to function. By using radio waves that can be sent or received, Bitcoin transactions and related blockchain data can still be transmitted. Maybe you can research this further this and at least I’ve given you an idea already. IMO, it's unlikely that the internet connection will shut down worldwide. We now have an internet provider based on satellite, and that's Starlink. You can have internet access everywhere, even in remote areas. Post by: peter0425 on August 30, 2025, 11:24:09 AM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? No, it can survive still and continue running. But there are challenges of course namely speed, coverage and privacy. If we use mesh networks, it will not have the same bandwidth as a global internet which would make it slower to use and will even have difficulty trying to cover a huge area. If some are in an area with low mesh capabilities, it might affect the entire network. While using satellites may expose certain blocks or transactions that is tied to a specific location or at least a general area that could sacrifice our privacy. If anyone has some right equipment they would be able to trace someone easily.Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: KiaKia on August 30, 2025, 11:41:59 AM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? There are way too many solutions available worldwide to win if this type of scenario plays out, satellites now provide even more stable Internet than the normal service providers that we are all used to. We also have a lot of Esim providers, you don't even need a sim card to insert into your phone before you can access the Internet. To be realistic this is never going to happen, there are so many countries in the world, even if a new world war happens some countries will be left out. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: DeathAngel on August 30, 2025, 11:52:47 AM Bitcoin could still exist if the internet went down for a week. Transactions would pretty much pause since nodes & miners couldn’t talk to each other but the blockchain itself wouldn’t vanish. Once the internet came back the network would sync up again & process any pending transactions. So it would survive but people wouldn’t really be able to use it during that time.

Even if world war 111 begins the Internet will still be active, it might not be active on your own environment but it will be active in other areas in the world. And Bitcoin will still exist even if world war 3 begins. Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: Muba20 on August 30, 2025, 01:42:13 PM I think that if something like happens in the internet, then naturally Bitcoin transactions will be stopped because Bitcoin runs through the internet. Now the point is that even if such a story is imaginary, it is not possible in reality. Because the internet will not be stopped simultaneously worldwide. If it happens one or two countries then it will be running in most of the countries. But the main thing is that if the internet is down for 7 days, there will be no transactions for 7 days, and then when the internet comes back, transactions will start again. There is nothing to worry about.

Post by: sunsilk on August 30, 2025, 02:05:14 PM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? Very likely that it will still exist. The internet shutting down won't completely erase the bitcoin network so, it will be stopped for a moment but will remain there. That's why even if there will an internet interruption for a week. Transactions will be stuck and it will be back once again if any of those mesh networks or other solutions will make it back there to proceed. Satellite technology is already there and it's not only Elon's starlink provides it. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: SilverCryptoBullet on August 30, 2025, 02:11:54 PM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? If the Internet lost globally, I think this planet would be in a very servere situation and our life is more important than our bitcoins or the Internet.Bitcoin blockchain is Proof of Work and Bitcoin miners work by mining with Internet connection is mandatory for connecting to other nodes and finding new blocks, confirming transactions. Without Internet, PoW mining can not work and no new Bitcoin blocks will be found, no new Bitcoin transactions will be confirmed. Fortunately Bitcoin don't disappear and bitcoins you have will stay in your non custodial wallets. When Internet resumes, PoW mining resumes, new blocks will be found and you will be able to move your bitcoins again. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: Royal Cap on August 30, 2025, 02:23:26 PM I don't think such a scenario will ever happen. If there is a third world war, that is a different matter. But even if the internet stops for a while, maybe the transactions on One Chain will stop.
But I think the Lightning Network will work. Because I heard that it works through satellites. And the thing about One Chain is that the day the internet comes back, everything will be fine again. Post by: Faisal2202 on August 30, 2025, 02:24:15 PM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? It would not come to a halt because the internet will not be turned off around the world as this is too impractical. But if we just imagine that it halts, and what will happen to Bitcoin, I think everything will stop as if you are running a node or mining, then you won't be able to perform those actions anymore.Everything will pause, and when the internet is back on, everything will resume exactly from where it paused. Although there have been some steps made in this matter, you can learn more from here. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5545764.0 Although now there have been made around dozens of topics on this before hehe, I am not saying why you asked, but it just not adding any information, and even I don't get much from the member's reply. Even if all the networks and satellites are down and the chain halted, it would just resume as soon as the internet was back. Where's the problem?Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: bogdanb on August 30, 2025, 03:04:23 PM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? Many people have made many comments, but it cann’t be said that it will actually stop completely. We all know that the main strength of bitcoin is its decentralized network. Even if there is no internet, Bitcoin transactions will continue using alternative communication media such as mesh networks or satellites. However, yes, it is natural that it will not be acceptable to everyone because its speed is a little slow, but the system is not like it will stop completely.Rather then, these offline solutions show that bitcoin is a kind of resilient technology that can survive in various situations. I think it's better to look at thr bright side of Bitcoin and the opportunities we can get with Bitcoin than focusing attention and energy of such presumptuous scenarios because literally the world has gradually grown pat that and it will only be assertive to keeping your taughts in such a mind frame, it will be better to refocus on the good ahead. Bitcoin will survive, but if this will be prolong, bitcoin might be put at risk then. No internet means no bitcoin transactions and promotions, and there’ll be no access to our bitcoin as well, and I don’t think bitcoiners will be able to manage this issue if this will be prolong and won’t get fixed as early as possible.
Bitcoin will continue to exist if this is just for a week. But this is highly impossible because a lot would be affected especially those jobs that are mainly operated by the internet. Post by: retreat on August 30, 2025, 08:03:08 PM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? It would survive, because it was the internet that was shut down, not the Bitcoin architecture itself, so Bitcoin would remain there and would not be affected. However, all transactions would likely be pending, because broadcasting those transactions to the network requires the internet, and since the internet is unavailable, all transactions would be held until internet access is restored. But you know that a case like this would cause an uproar worldwide, because the internet is so crucial to modern life, and I think it wouldn't just be Bitcoin that would be affected, but all sectors globally. Post by: freedomgo on August 30, 2025, 08:34:59 PM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? Having an internet shutdown is a threat to bitcoin, simply because bitcoin itself is operated by the internet. So if there’s no available internet connection, bitcoin transactions will never be possible, but bitcoin will never be lost, they’re always intact in our wallet as long as they remain untouched. But I don’t think this will be allowed by majority to lost a connection for one week. Even just for a day, big companies will already complain for that, so I don’t see it possible to happen except if there are unexpected war or fire incidents that would shut down all internet connections. Bitcoin won’t be threatened by just a week of internet shutdown. But exchanges will definitely be struggling on that since they will lost their possible income. However for bitcoin alone, it will continue to survive as long as the owner is safeguarding it well. But transactions will remain unseen, because without connection, there’ll be no possible buying and selling transaction that would describe the operation in bitcoin market. Post by: viljy on August 31, 2025, 03:56:34 AM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? If such a scenario occurs, the bitcoin network may well split into separate segments operating on a regional scale. This scenario depends on the capacity of the miners and their location. Let's say all the transcontinental cables in the world have been damaged, then will satellite Internet be able to provide stable and fast connectivity for all miners? Whether forks will occur depends on the answer to this question. If this happens, then, depending on various reasons, there may subsequently be a conflict of interest about which fork to consider as the real one. This could cause a drop in the price of any of these newly formed bitcoin forks. So a stable and fast and, most importantly, a single Internet is very important for the functioning of bitcoin. Even if the major players such as internet provider just shut down their internet out of the blue, people can reconnect again eventually using their own routes. Internet was created with decentralization in mind at the beginning, only know that major player dominates the space. The only real scenario where it happens is when humanity gets wiped out by catastrophic event, no other scenario. I don't think that a few weeks of internet shutdown will be a problem for our Bitcoin on the Blockchain, at most it will be on standstill which means there will be no transactions, as soon as it is restored it will be business as usual. It will still be there, whether in our wallets or in centralized exchanges, but its function as a currency or investment will be temporarily shut down and will only be back once the internet is available again. However, it will reduce its development towards global adoption if this losing of internet will be happening most of the time, and it will lessen the exposure of bitcoin towards its new investors and users in the crypto market. Given how much our lives depend on internet communication, if the global internet were to go down for a week, not only would Bitcoin be down or disconnected, but everything connected to the internet would be affected as well.Bitcoin would only experience a temporary disruption, and during the internet outage, Bitcoin would not function because the blockchain ledger would be unable to record transfers. However, once the internet is back online, everything would return to normal, including Bitcoin. The network would resume synchronization and new blocks would be added to it, and it would function as usual. So, there's nothing to worry about if it's only temporary. Post by: Ucy on September 01, 2025, 08:01:07 PM That scenario is very unlikely, but assuming it happens there will most likely be people, businesses, nodes, wallets, internet cafe, etc that manage to stay online maybe via satellite or other special means. They stay connected globally while private local devices connect to them, mostly to access their wallets.
If international or global internet does not exist atall at that period, permissionless intranet or local/national Bitcoin networks of nodes and others would form around the world. But the most trustworthy and reliable networks from one or few places would be connected to by people from other countries via SMS, radio link, etc. I think reliable Bitcoin companies or organizations will be responsible for facilitating secure transactions between them and the individuals from other countries. Post by: Hamza2424 on September 01, 2025, 08:52:34 PM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? Mesh network can work but they are like connecting one node to another and without internet the range will be too low for example the Bluetooth can be used but the speed of BT is not fast enough to synchronize the blockchain data from every node quickly, the data won't be moving from one node to another and it won't update the whole network and this will just delay everything. On top of that, with a mesh network with BT, the range is a big issue, you can connect nodes in one place, tell me how many people are running nodes around you? Don't know, but if in 100 KM range no one is running a node, then you won't be able to broadcast any transaction and make any so you are out. Therefore internet with speed and range is necessary, we can use wires, but that is going to take time but if we have to use internet cables, then why not use the internet itself because the internet I am using and you are using connected me to the whole world with wires. When the connection is restored, just synchronize the network again and voila, problem solved. A week without internet won't just shake bitcoin! Why are people so catastrophic lately?
That's why we should think of fiat currency as an ally and not as a competitor, as in other topics about Bitcoin replacing traditional money. This is the best reason for banknotes to continue to exist… ::) Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: Ivystar5 on September 01, 2025, 11:49:22 PM SNIP OP is known for coming up with strange hypotheses, and in some cases, he never comes back to the thread. There are different Internet service providers, so I doubt that all of them will shut down at once. Since Bitcoin is decentralized, an Internet shutdown in a part of the globe will not affect the blockchain. Even if there is a global Internet shutdown, transactions will be pending. Immediately service is restored, the pending transactions will be processed in the blockchain. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? But hypothetically speaking without internet I am still not aware of how bitcoin can be used. Although honestly I am not that well versed with this part of the tech, so maybe someone else can give a better answer. Practically speaking in such a scenrio saving your own life will become more important. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: Abiky on September 02, 2025, 08:58:20 PM Would Bitcoin survive through offline solutions like mesh networks and satellites, or would it completely halt? If the Internet shuts down, Bitcoin will die. At least, temporarily. It's possible that nodes would connect to a mesh network or something, resulting in the "revival" of the Blockchain. But at that point, Bitcoin will be so weak, it would be easy enough to attack it. After all, not all nodes are miners. What if most miners don't find a way to connect to the same mesh network as the nodes? Satellites could work, but signal fidelity would greatly depend on weather conditions. In essence, Bitcoin would be "weakened" to a point where no one will care about using it. I doubt governments will act in unison and shut down the whole Internet. Not only it's impossible, but it would also disrupt online businesses and services. It would be complete chaos. Definitely not worth the effort. Fingers crossed an individual or corporation runs Bitcoin nodes in space to avoid this kind of situation. One can only hope... Post by: daxkie on September 03, 2025, 05:25:50 PM If the whole internet shuts down for a week, Bitcoin won’t suddenly vanish, it’ll just feel like your wallet got locked in a safe you can’t open yet. Transactions won’t really move because we all depend on the internet to connect. Some hardcore Bitcoiners could still use satellites or mesh networks, but let’s be real, the average person won’t have access to that. Worst case? If the shutdown lasted way longer, like months or years, Bitcoin would struggle badly because no one could sync or trade properly. But as long as the internet comes back, Bitcoin picks up right where it left off, like hitting play after a long pause.
Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? Post by: HistoLock on September 04, 2025, 07:20:51 AM What's up with this narrative that the internet will suddenly short down one day? Are we being real about this kind of assumption or we are just painting an hypothetical scenarios that's just vague? Yes you are right I agree with your words because if the internet suddenly shuts down then Bitcoin will survive in an alternative way. But I think this idea will not happen in reality rather it is possible in imagination, because if the whole world network shuts down suddenly then will all the developed countries that are related to Bitcoin let it happen I think they will never let it happen. Yes it is of course true that the big countries of the world buy Bitcoin, so they will never want the global network to shut down which can lead to their ban. If that is the case then of course there will be an alternative method I think if the network shuts down all over the world it will be shut down for a short time and will Bitcoin survive through it. But I think this is just a hypothetical idea because the global network will not shut down and Bitcoin will survive even in this situation.Regardless of how strong the bitcoin protocol is, if the internet shots down, most bitcoin holders will momentarily worry about others things first before Thier bitcoin because it sure will affect life in general. We've gone past that age where the internet can completely shut down for so long without an alternative solution popping up. If it's just for a week, bitcoin will still survive through it. Bitcoin existence will always be there, but since its selling and buying transactions will be stopped for a while, then expect that bitcoin promotion will be slow in progress. Even in other aspects that rely on internet, survival is there but there will be slow progress once internet connection will be compromised. However, things like this will be very unlikely to happen not just for bitcoin, but even in other aspects that are solely operated by the internet. The government itself will surely find it hard to operate if the internet will be lost and compromised. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? If there is satellite, there is internet, right? So we have to consider a scenario where there aren't satellites available as well. On that scenario, I think chaos would be inserted in society, so Bitcoin would be the least of the concerns of people in general. It wouldn't stop existing, and we don't really know how its price would be impacted, but once the world got stabilized again, it could be an alternative of currency for people to deal with and to store value. It's important to notice that on that situation where internet wouldn't be available, fiat currencies would be also likely to be negatively impacted, so who knows, maybe Bitcoin could become a valuable asset after all. So if the Internet suddenly stopped working, it would be a global disaster and we would have more things to worry about than the future of bitcoin.
If that happens, our world will return to the Stone Age. Therefore, the government will never let that happen. I dare say that the scenario of a global internet disconnection will never happen. Either governments embrace the revolution or get left behind in the dust. They're already joining the Bitcoin bandwagon by regulating it. Bitcoin is a digital currency which exits on the blockchain and these depends on the internet for its functionality so, we would always need the internet. BTC experts and observers wouldn't just focus on the price, but would all think of quick solutions if it happened at any time, leading to the birth of alternative solutions. Another reason is that not only does BTC need the internet, but the modern world also relies heavily on it to run all its online activities. That's the real test. Technically, it's true, and an internet outage would temporarily pause. Transactions couldn't be propagated to other nodes, miners couldn't sync, but the blockchain wouldn't be lost—it's already stored. Once the internet returns, all nodes will sync again. Russia and NATO are not in a good terms and Trump has previously told NATO countries to shutdown Russia jets if they enter their spaces. This is a pure sign that NATO and Russia might be preparing for another horrible conflict exercises that could disrupt the whole world. However if it does, then we have wait till it gets restored and then the network would start working again. It will just pause a while, it cannot be stopped.. Maybe in future we might find ways to solve this problem and use bitcoin even if the network is down. I see some people talking about Lora, I have heard about it but not how it is used. If the Internet shutdown down due to the war with Russia, I don't think anyone would be talking about their Bitcoin but rather thinking of shelter and how to evacuate the regions affected by the conflict. The only thing that will make the Internet to disappear is world war 3 and I hope it won't happen. Title: Re: Could Bitcoin still exist if the internet was shut down worldwide for a week? My country never fought in WW1 and WW2, it is none of our business, the highest war that took place here was civil war, and so is the same with many other Africa countries, if war is brewing it is better to exit your country as there will be many signs available. Bitcoin transaction will freeze on the blockchain until the internet is back and even if it takes over 10years Bitcoin will be well preserved, people need to stop worrying about what could happen to Bitcoin if the internet goes down. As for those talking about WW3, it will be more bloodier than the past because of the tools of destruction that's available today, generations of generations will seize to exists and it will take decades to heal from it, think about something like Hiroshima and times it 10x, atomic bombs today are marginally more effective than what hit Japan in the past, don't pray for war but peace instead. |
